what I learned from watching is to take it arc by arc.

It just takes one good arc to save a bad series (ZeXal) and it takes just one bad arc to ruin a series (Arc V)

Season 1 could have been good. They had the setting, an interesting villain, and interesting archetypes and character designs to work with.
What went wrong was that, despite designs, the characters were cardboard cutouts

The problem in my opinion is that there is no tension when it comes to Playmaker. The plot was designed specifically so that Playmaker CANNOT lose otherwise the show ends.

So if he will work on upcoming YGO, is very likely that characters will look similar to this.

Also the focus on speed duels, forgot to add into what went wrong. Digital surfboards are an even harder sell than duel runners, and the 3 monster/spell slots made duels far less interesting mechanically.
Also if the whole point of pushing speed duels was to promote duel links, it was an exercise in futility considering those formats sell based on nostalgia. I think pure cyberse and gouki would be really fun in duel links and wouldn't complain if they skipped zexal and arc-v worlds for vrains

The opening is the sole reason why I’m hype. Ai and Roboppy shenanigans is all I wanted and now they are the antagonists. No more ties to the Ignis mean Playmaker and co. can lose for reasons that don’t have to do with the world being destroyed. No more forced drama. Not gonna lie, watching those gave strong pre-Yusaku vs Bohman 4 nostalgia.

Rewatching ZEXAL II, I came to the conclusion that the first arc was better than I had first given it credit for. With the exception of not!Sawatari and the flower lady, all of the episodes dueling against Barian pawns introduced the viewer to something new or moved the plot forward. There were certainly some episodes that could have been cut, like Yuma vs Shark at the hospital or Shark vs Rio, but they were still very entertaining episodes.
