here, another example from a tv show and it still looks better than every modern movie produced in this era

Yes

But lain is so philosophical

>anymore
just keep watching the old stuff, you big baby

I think OP is talking about the colour palette,

Anime was at its most oversaturated in the 90s and early 00s though.

I don't think color hues are a money issue. All you do is click on the color wheel in the coloring program.

Digital coloring killed the essence of visually appealing anime. Prove me wrong.

really I blame tv resolution

classic anime wanted to make something that would look good on your crappy 90s low-res television but now that everything is in HD they just go hog-wild

Just tell me how long you’ve been watching anime

same thing ruined modern porn for me

blade runner rip off?

>prove
Nobody will be able to convince you otherwise, Mr. Philistine, hater of art, sucker of many dicks.

I watched the best 100 anime recommended to me by Yea Forums and then I've switchd exclusively to manga after I realized how much the majority of anime suck

Look at this dood

How high Boku no Pico was on that list?

>why can't anime characters look uglier than real 3d people again
Kindly end yourself you blind faggot

are you just pretending to be retarded?

Just watch 90s anime
Most of my favorite animes are from the 90s anyway

Are you blind or do you just have shit taste?

Watch Mob psycho fag

Decent bait, but it needs some work.

I think OP meant to type too bright or washed-out

Neither. You need to be ultra stupid to think modern barbie playset colored anime looks good, though.

You can literally go outside and find a majority of the butt ugly people are better looking than old anime characters though, are you sure you aren't a "muh realism" shit eating normalfag?

>unironically thinking anime with the same aesthetic as toys made for little girls looks good

the three examples after it are though.

Because the first one is a comedy and the second one is a lighthearted shoujo.
No excuse for the third one though, most LN adaptations by Silver Link are shit and look like this.

The male lead is a handsome, respectable Chad.

You people really can't make up your mind. Sometimes digital coloring makes everything washed out. Now you claim that the colors are oversaturated. What's the next step? We go full circle and complain about shading?

Because digitalization was a mistake.

Because of course they're the same people, right?

>duuude were actually unique and different
Pretty sure you're all the same drones.

Anime was a mistake

It's pretty rare that digital coloring ends up looking washed out, especially the later on you go.
Hypersaturation is a lot easier though, because you have a wider gamut of colors available and can do more aggressive color grading.
A lot of older anime was still brightly colored, but digital coloring allows for even brighter colors.

People keep saying this, but I get fucking rock god damn hard when I can see the exact texture of their skin.

Back then, Cowboy BeBop had the same quality of any movie or OVA of its time.

>of any movie or OVA of its time
Way to expose yourself as someone who has literally no fucking clue about what they are talking about. Holy shit, this board.

lol no. it was top tier for TV anime, but there were numerous movies and OVAs from that time and earlier that had better animation and art.

An appeal to authority is not an argument.

Neither are your feefees, shitposter-kun.

how the fuck does cel limit artistic expression?

Why the hell is it that 90% of threads complaining about the state of anime are made by people who not only know nothing about modern anime, but also know nothing about the older anime era they praise?

Kill yourself.

Because they are ironic pre-2000s weebs.

Good question.

No you

Attached: 8.png (630x480, 421K)

ugh. this looks terrible

True. It's a real shame.

That doesn't make sense. You can have plenty of styles in cel animation.

>feefees
Are you fucking 12?

Because you started watching anime within the last 6 months and haven't watched enough anime.
youtube.com/watch?v=0rRLMzYmosU

Fun fact: GiTS was the exception, not the standard, back then.

for me its the colors, i hate how sterile everything looks now

Attached: 1549165704086.gif (498x370, 74K)

Sailor Moon has the best color scheme in fiction. Those colors always where sooo fucking dreamy. GOD DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!

Attached: 1541904458713.jpg (372x402, 65K)

>for me its the colors
>i hate how sterile everything looks now
The reason why you think that cel anime doesn't look sterile is because of the grain, not the colors. You can add a filmgrain filter and layer it on top of digitally animated works. There you go. Not it isn't sterile anymore. There are various anime that even did this, e.g. Dennou Coil, Sakamichi no Apollon

Kill yourself you filthy anime hater

>Shitgeki no Kusojin

>Dennou Coil
>implying anyone wants to watch that hideous piece of shit
not him, a fucking film grain filter just isn't the same and you know it you disingenuous faggot

I like how clean digital animation looks. It works better for some aesthetics.
Theres a lot of anime coloring and effects you see now that couldn't be done with cel animation. Which is to be expected, I guess since digital has more tools and color options than cel.

Fuck off with your strawman.

>missing out on one of the most well-animated TV anime of all time
It's a must watch.

It looks fucking disgusting like a letter to momo.

Stick to your creatively limited, pre-historic approach to animation, boomer. We've moved on, conquered new grounds. When Studio4C first did things that people couldn't even dream of doing using cel, it was clear that the new age had begun.

>It looks fucking disgusting like a letter to momo.
Fell off my chair from laughter. You owe me for the medical bill.

they have the same quality, maybe Evangelion is better than both.

Every teenager goes through their "I don't know what I'm talking about but every pre-2000 anime is literally Akira/Honneamise/Patlabor 2/Ghost in the Shell!" phase

Is this shopped? I dont remember the Major looking so manly. She looks like a white woman with that big ass manjaw.

Who the fuck are you quoting?

ghost in the shell was god-tier. Shame not much like it comes out anymore

Boogiepop just finished and that had pretty muted colors outside of one episode.

>anymore
Not much came out like it even back then.

boogiepop was complete ass. read the novels

not him, but there is nothing wrong with realism. All anime have it and it's great.

true but much more with its brilliant aesthetic came out around then and into the early 2000s

Fucking checked.

Yes, but you have more possibilities with digital.

Not him, but with digital you can have infinte layers to work with for starters. The color pallet is vastly less limited. Colors can be as saturated or unsaturated as you please, unlike cel where even the brightest stuff still still has a dark hue.

Shinya Ohira is an prominent example of someone whose style was limited cel, because of the layer limitation.

Because you're an oldfag. Also there's a reason monitor settings were invented. I have a decent monitor which takes care of my eyes with something like "EyeCare" and low blue light.

Less otaku, more budget in the production of anime.

No it fucking doesnt lmao, berserk show was made on such a tight budget they literally reduced half the fight scenes to still images, like this one. Its literally less screens than a manga, whats the fucking point? Not to say that a page of berserk looks more impressive than this whole show. Its only somewhat good because of its source material and soundtrack, also because its hard to be worse than nuberserk anime.

If the same result can be achieved by another tool with way less pain in the ass, the tool hurts productivity and is obsolete.

>Less otaku

I wish there was a purge happening right now in Japan killing all of Otaku scum.

>anime recommended to me by Yea Forums
well there's your problem

>The oversaturation in modern anime hurts my eyes.
Mine too.

Yes.

A lot of the attractiveness of old anime came from them being made on Scooby Doo budgets. It gave the whole product a roughness that was attractive in the right circumstances.

Like the average modern anime looks far better than the average late '80s - '90s anime. But the best older anime have that aesthetic to them that is very difficult for digital animation to match - things are just too 'clean' now.

Good point.

This.

What point?

the problem is when shows do this nowadays everyone on Yea Forums call it "westernized SJW propaganda bullshit"

Attached: Carole-and-Tuesday-01-29.jpg (1280x720, 99K)

>"westernized SJW propaganda bullshit"
I blame Yea Forums and /pol/

Oh yeah I remembered amother example, Lum's iridescent hair couldnt be done with cel animation, so they had to change it to green.
With digital it would be trivial however.

Attached: 1989-SeriesThumbnailsManga_UruseiYatsura_400x320.jpg (400x320, 147K)

No one ever answers this question.

I don't know if they don't know or they're just stubborn.

So again, why does older Anime look different? Why is this style of lighting gone?

are you retarded
read the thread dumbass

I did.

Attached: 1552782269224.png (507x565, 25K)

because they stopped using cel animation and moved to digital

multiple people have answered it, read the thread. with cel animation you had to use actual light to light the scenes, versus current day digital animation where lighting is all done with digital effects.
youtube.com/watch?v=xf0WjeE6eyM

user...

...And its just impossible to do with Digital? Because I don't see why it would be

and yet looked pleasing to the eye

you can't capture light the same way when you aren't literally taking a picture of it

you can, but it's much harder to emulate it in digital than you'd expect
might want to look at a video of how cel animation is done, you'd understand why it's so difficult to emulate it

It's not "impossible". It just that no one wants it or cares enough for them to emulate it other than "people" like otaking and OP

its because elitist pricks like you download or watch them on illegal streaming sites instead of buying their actual products to support their industry.

fuck "the industry" 99% of anime coming out every season is complete unwatchable garbage

Yes and thats why its still alive, if they catered to you, anime would have long been dead given how much you love supporting them.

COVFEE

i support what i feel deserve it, and that does not include any anime released this decade, for the most part. also, not my fault retarded japs are still stuck in the dvd era and don't know other ways of making money back from their shit soulless projects

Gits arise sold jack shit compared to anime that catered to the japanese weebs, anime is a business, they need to earn, if elitists wont make it work then They'll keep making trash shows that sell.

>Gits arise sold jack shit
good
fuck arise

As much as anime has gotten a traction on the west, its still nowhere close to japanese market sales. Even back then in the golden era which most elitist's faves are in. Anime is still very much a niche outside japan, so dont expect the scene to change anytime soon.

You comment on their bad business strategies for selling anime to weebs but truth be told its the localizations teams responsibility to do that. They tried and failed, anime just doesnt sell as big as japans.

old anime was so much better

Literally anything is better than Lain. Fucking SAO is better than SEL.

No, Lain looks good AND has a compelling story.

I feel you OP. I actually have two cells from this movie (Mokoto headshot when she's on the boat talking to Batou and pic-related).

I know it's easy to blame tech on why the color is so different, but that's bullshit. Computers can replicated a FAR wider color palette including those used in this scene.

A lot of it has to do with Japan's economy getting trashed so creators only care about one thing and one thing only...making anime they think will sell. Anime like Serial Experiment Lain and FLCL would NEVER be made today. The days of taking chances are over. I don't think it's just over-saturation. Older anime had far superior directors and talent because they could afford to pay for it.

I guess just pray Japan's economy rebounds one day...but I seriously doubt that's happening. Competition is all around them and their society has a LOT of problems like low-birthrate and refusing to accept foreign labor.

Attached: IMG_20160122_043553.jpg (2560x1440, 439K)

A thread like this would've been shitposted into oblivion just like 3 or 4 years ago. When did nostalgiafagging become okay on Yea Forums? Not that I'm complaining.

Attached: 1437613532588.jpg (1024x768, 149K)

When we have 12 solid years of moéblobs, thin lines and LN color palettes. It’s been ass-tastic.

Gits movie was shit desu. S.A.C. is much better, at least Major doesn't look like a man and colors aren't washed out.

Sort of agree. The colors before looks comfy. Is it that hard to do similar color palette with digital?

I'm generally kind of a defender of modern anime, and the oversaturation doesn't bother me that much except that I wish there was more variety, but what really bothers me are CG, semi-photorealistic backgrounds that make characters look like they don't belong in the world. Anime was always weird about this with its style but you could suspense your disbelief better when everything was handdrawn.

>muh dark and gritty brown shit colors
Just go over to you tasteless cocksuckers. They even made a fucking shitty gits movie to match the shitty anime so you shitters who mistakenly ended up on the wrong side can go back home to all the gritty washed out garbage you can stuff down your .avi throats.

I actually bought the GitS manga after liking the 1995 movie a lot, I was so confused, that manga is almost nothing like the movie, overall it was a bit disappointing even if there were a few good moments. Silly Major was a positive I guess.
At no point did I understand the plot of the manga, it seemed to go a bit off the rails to me.

now here's a great example of an ugly, shiny looking anime

Can you post the other?

Are you fucking retarded? The point is in digital you can easily as fuck adjust contrast saturation or gamma. There are good looking well animated modern shows but majority of anime today looks like WASHED OUT SHIT. So are the japs who deal with anime postprocessing fuckin blind?

Ask and ye shall receive.

I had this cell professionally framed along with its accompanying drawing that tells the painters what color goes where. I THINK it's called a "douga" and they're VERY difficult to get with the cell nowadays (Batou also has one).

Fun story on how I got these. They were giving these out at a cell painting class I took at an anime con a LONG time ago. A guy who lived in both Japan and the U.S. just brought in a giant stack of cells from this movie and said have at it. Most of them were from the scene at the boat because I remember a buddy of mine got the one where she was scuba diving underwater along with another cell layer that had the water bubbles.

I may be totally wrong here as this was forever ago, but I think his name was Steven Bennet and he was the guy you wanted at your anime cons. Fun guy. I remember he was the one that ruined Japanese women for us because, when we asked him what they were liked, he told us "You wouldn't like them at all. It's horrible. They expect you to work insanely long hours, while they stay at home. And when you finally retire, they refer to you as "garbage that sits on the side of the road waiting to be picked up".

We thought he was kidding, then we all saw "Dragon Half" anime and this is actually mentioned in it.

Attached: motoko.jpg (4128x1897, 1.79M)

>colors bad!
>everything should be drab and gray!

>muh philosophy
yeah, gits has that aswell and so does every other show. not to mention that gits also comments on politics, meme culture and bla bla bla. i feel like there's a good portion of people who praise lain do it because they think the show it's super weird and quirky and still philosophically relevant, but it's not. the shit that lain said is old news now. just watch gits already.

Because 16 year olds who've just discovered their first pre-2000 OVAs and movies make up a lot of Yea Forums now and feel like they have to signal just how "superior" old anime is to be validated.
Even in threads where the OP just wants to discuss older anime, it always gets derailed with "Ugh, anime will never look like this again."

I haven't seen a good old-school anime discussion in nearly a year now because people who've just started torrenting older anime this decade feel like they have to repeat the same tired arguments about the state of the industry.

>12 solid years
Try 20.

Shirow's manga tends to always be better than the anime adaptions, for some reason anime directors want to turn most of his silly manga into serious and gritty "deep" stories.

Glad we have another thread filled with anonymous historians who feel the need to elaborate on the bubble economy and the lost decade. I need this grim reminder on a weekly basis. What an educated board this has become. Always blows my mind how smart and unique you people are and the length you are willing to go to properly explore the history of your hobby. So many extremely unique theses in this very thread. Damn, you could probably fill an entire book with them.

Attached: 1540689422347.png (634x857, 324K)

Good for you.

Cheers, and here's to another year's worth of garbage threads where teenage anime historians complain about the sate of modern anime rather than actually discuss older anime.

Attached: Mobile Suit Gundam 0079 (144).jpg (960x720, 612K)

Wrong you dumb fuck.
Lack of contrasts, black values, and shading did.
A good example of this is VEG. Completely stellar visuals and detailed animation ruined by dogshit gray filter. There's a reason why vegtards use the mechanical hand scene in showing off, it's because it's the only one with proper shading.

There are still shows like Shingeki no Kyojin and Kabaneri though. The use of color in those shows should be the standard. Too bad producers are cheaping out more than ever.

>There are still shows like Shingeki no Kyojin and Kabaneri though. The use of color in those shows should be the standard. Too bad producers are cheaping out more than ever.

Not an argument.

Kumamiko is another shit show with nice looking colors, though.

yes , GITS is at least comprehend-able when you watch it for the first time and it's more interesting

>Lain looks good
its barely animated, it only LOOKS good due to character design
>compelling story.
bunch of random shit happens that is not explained and is open to """interpertation"""
i wouldn't call that compelling

pHiLiSoPhIcAL

Yeah I was really surprised by how impfessive the coloring in Kumamiko was
I don't think it was a shit show though

Non Non Biyori and Flip Flappers were pretty vivid too.
Are you one of those people that actually liked the ending?

head back to Yea Forums or something.
you're 2zoomer.

Bump

Not him but it was a good show for my dick outside of the ending. It really did go too far in places though. Poor Machi.

dumb falseflag poster.

Yes

I think philosophy regarding a modern take on the noosphere is pretty relevant today. A group of online services that make their money by doing complex analysis of shitloads of data, do algorithmic learning, and then communicate the results to each other is at a level of complexity higher than how we normally think of for machines. That's at least worth exploring, even if pseuds keep spouting shit about AI and machine learning that makes it sound a lot more ridiculous than it is.

I’m as much of a nostalgiafag as anyone but modern anime has frequently visually stunning shows. They just excel in different categories.

With digital coloring and better displays, we can achieve color contrast that was 100% impossible in the 90s even if we lose some of the texture from painted cells. Sure every digital attempt to mimic a light table has been lackluster, but we have access to much cleaner digital light effects that couldn’t have been done through practical means. The industry has been favoring striking color palettes and smooth motion over gorgeous stills with crazy shading a detail (not that the idea didn’t exist before... see Green Legend Ran or Crystania). There’s less emphasis on art grounded in realism, but that’s not inherently a bad thing at all.

I do not think the current industry has the chops to make something like Lodoss or something, but there’s worthwhile content of a different kind. If you’re like me, you probably miss that specific kind of content since it’s not being made, but there’s still a ton of great shit out there.

No, gits is a decent movie, but nothing special, a 7/10. Lain is actually good.

I mean the entire 2010s prove you wrong.

Yeah anime looked like shit in like 2002 compared to before and after, when budgets were slashed and production schedules rushed because the new time-saving tool. But as people got used to the tech, things leveled out.
