Why didn't Itachi kill Orochimaru when he had the chance? He had the perfect excuse: self-defense and the fact that Orochimaru was planning on betraying Akatsuki, and that's one less terrorist that Konoha has to worry about.
For a supposed double agent, he really sucked at his job, he never did anything that helped Konoha during his entire stay at Akatsuki. He in fact helped out this organization that threatens the Leaf quite a lot. Why did he even bother joining them?

The powercreep wasn't firmly established. Kakuzu was weaker than the First but wasn't considered (at the time) to be magnitudes weaker. That's why no one called bullshit when he mentions it, since Kakuzu during that arc was better than all the ninja sent to kill him...they could fathom that he was probably strong enough to at least survive an encounter with the First.

If the First was as strong as the powercreep made him rather than during the earlier Shippuden arcs then everyone would've called bullshit on Kakuzu.

No. It's also bullshit because Kakuzu is one of the very few (before the power creep) truly powerful characters who are also well-balanced. He's pseudo-immortal, smart and experienced as fuck, has incredibly destructive straight-forward jutsu while also being able to pull off surprise and combi-attacks with his hearts, and between his physical strength and his threads he's an absolute nightmare in close combat. I think his defeat was the most blatant show of plot armor besides maybe Deidara and Sasori.
