This kind of comedy is very much true to the original manga and anime. They could've had more like it if they had chosen to be more faithful but since they were trying to do a more serious take I guess we just get this episode as a nod.
Don't misunderstand though, the original was just as dark if not darker, just with more gags. It probably doesn't help that Hyakkimaru doesn't talk (properly) in this version since he used to give a lot of the banter.
