Actually you do pass down one sort of randomly-selected combination of half your potential genes, and the other half (again randomly chosen basically) are omitted. Then the baby takes the set of genes from each of their parents (which were themselves random assortments of each of their parents' genes that were passed on), and around half of each parents' genes become expressed/dominant, with the other half being inert/secondary, but still just as likely to get passed on usually.
