Yes, it's good. It was the first thing on UY I ever saw. Then I went back and watched the whole show. At the end, it was still the best thing in the whole show.
That said, I can see why a lot of people didn't like it. Because it took such a drastic turn away from the random comedy the show focused on. But since I'm not a big fan of random comedy, I would enjoy something different. When looked at on its own, outside the context of a comedy show, its a damn good stand alone movie.
Another way to look at it is, it's Haruhi's Endless Eight without the filler and trolling the audience.

Not really. He's probably really fond with the whole thing. A lot of the guys that would eventually join in different projects worked with him in UY and his experience on UY seems to have inspired a lot of the humor in some of his works, like in the Patlabor OVAs or in Gosenzo-sama Banbanzai.

The only thing that I can say is that, that wasn't his intention with the anime and movies. Even in Beautiful Dreamer he explored the idea of real vs fantasy, with Ataru choosing to live in reality. Mujaki offers him a harem but without Lum, and Ataru refuses to live in a world like that.
The anime industry was eventually going to reach that point, it's natural, just look at the movie business. But we shouldn't lose hope, because just like in the movies, eventually from all the garbage, a hidden masterpiece is going to be born to take the world by surprise.

True. During the anime and previous movies, they share some really intimate moments that prove Ataru genuinely loves her. He is clear about that during Beautiful Dreamer, Lum forever and the last episode, he even kisses her at the end of the show because he genuinely loves her and accepted her in his life.
