I was curious what the fuck they were trying to do and after searching for it, it's just CR trying to come up with something to replace a japanese joke again. So the nip was 何故もへちまもねえの and the word in question is へちま (hechima). So pretty much the plant in question can be stripped of it's skin and seeds and then used to scrub yourself such as in the bath but upon doing so the skin and seeds are essentially useless. So using the phrase ~へちまもない is like saying "there's nothing as useless as saying 'insert word before the phrase'." So in hyakkimaru's case they're telling him to stop saying/asking "why?" and that's essentially all it is. A phrase that emphasizes opposition to something spoken. A more common usage is ~も糞もない which means the same thing.

I cannot fathom why people think the telepathy is dumb but completely buy the soul vision shit when the latter is obviously a harder pill to swallow. I like the new anime's take on it where he doesn't have telepathy as another interpretation of the story but there was nothing wrong with the original's telepathy.
The dumbest thing in the manga is the map rash and the new anime was plenty happy to keep it when even the anime from 50 fucking years ago knew it was too dumb and replaced it with a better episode.

Not that user, but I prefer the soul vision to telepathy at least in this case because the soul vision only really exists to help hyakki with just existing while having no senses, without it he wouldn't be able to do basically anything. But telepathy is something that would allow him to communicate and connect with others, which, for this adaption, would have ruined this whole experience with learning to be a normal human being, if he could understand and 'talk' to everyone from the beginning, getting his senses back would lose a LOT of weight emotionally, since, again, he can already connect with others without them, whereas in the show he's pretty much completely cut off from the world and the only things that exist for him are vague shapes.
Plus I like that they made 'soul vision' something that exists in the world on its own, or that could be learned, like with the old blind dude who also has it.

I do agree the lack of telepathy helps make the recovery of various parts more emotional but I think that's due to poor execution in the manga and original anime more than a problem with the telepathy itself. The live action movie actually shows Jukai teaching Hyakkimaru to combine his telepathy with his prosthetic mouth ventriloquy, has an audio effect over his telepathy voice, and manages to make a very emotional scene out of him recovering his voice unlike the old anime and manga.
I also think the new anime's approach of him not being able to talk works well for animation but I don't think it'd have worked well in manga format. That's probably also why the currently running manga reboot has kept the telepathy, while feeling equally as modern and verisimilar as the new anime.

I get that the manga/adaptions have their own strong points with the methods they chose, but overall I'd say that scrapping the telepathy entirely makes Hyakki's situation work more on a basic level, without being able to connect to others at all makes the point where he gets his hearing/feeling back a lot more vulnerable, since he's completely unfamiliar with the world and these concepts, and didn't even know they existed. And it generally allows for his relationship/connection with Dororo to build up slowly over time in its unique way, rather than them being able to talk from the beginning.
Though I do understand that Hyakki's way of speaking would have been difficult to convey in a manga, at least without it being annoying. Though even so, I think the anime making the changes that it did works a lot more naturally with the stories premise.
