Some I prefer over the other in both sides.
I only play KC but I do like some of the AL designs. I prefer AL Kako, Furutaka, Ise, & Hyuuga over their KC counterparts for example. However, one thing that turns me off is the animal ears/horns thing for IJN ships that gives them too much going on at the same time. Also loli battleships based on the big 7 just shows that AL doesn't care as long as they print money.
KC Prinz > AL Prinz.
AL Bismarck (minus rigging) is so similar to KC Bismarck that I can't take AL seriously. Well, KC Bisko is perfection anyway so it can't be helped that they wanna rip it off.

AL doesn't care about the Japanese ships that much. Not all of them are bad though. Mikasa for one does look the part of Togo's flagship that is most venerated ship of the combined fleet, and she's designed with sensibility towards Taisho era just as Hood's designed to call out to Edwardian era.
I am happy on the design decision that went to the Big E. I don't think Yoshinori would pull her off that well. (His Warspite was ok, but it made me think too much of QE)

I do like AL Akagi based on looks but as a design they have too much going on IMO. Demon fox + senko + ship parts are just a bit jarring as a combination.
On the other hand, KC Akagi is a bland, serious type archer character that just happened to get memed into being a glutton because of an ingame bauxite bug. The anime made the meme canon. If that didn't happen, Akagi would have stayed as a bland potato in my mind.
KC Akagi's 2nd remodel (about to be revealed and released in a few hours) leaves room for hope designwise, but knowing shibafu there isn't much that's gonna change on the girl compared to the rigging.

I'm not an expert on this matter; some Jap otaku could probably talk about it endlessly, but there are many little details; sometimes the Kai-Ni version has more skimpy clothes because they removed armor to increase speed.
In Shimakazes case; she was a prototype and incredibly fast DD, as such her design is completely unique, very light and kinda race queen like.
Coloration also plays a role, just like the sailor and seifuku aesthetics.
It depends a lot on the artist of course.
Some paid a lot of attention to taking design clues form the actual ship and it's history or "personality" (in terms of her historic performance and behavior), while others are closer to AL and just did whatever.
