It seems to me Miyu was introduced in order to give Aoi a purpose in the story. It would be ok if she is still in comma so Aoi can find a way to save her and be around in the last arc. Aoi needs to save her and not Yusaku otherwise they should have had Miyu in Aoi's role since the beginning.

Aoi's already saved Miyu by fighting with Yusaku. Aqua's not around anymore so Aoi might not have much reason to see Miyu though.

That's hardly unique to VRAINS. But there's a difference between eschewing simplicity and being complex for no reason. For example, here's Bite Bug's summon. Since it's effect is Special Summoning itself by reducing the ATK of an opponent's monster, they have it gnaw on its ATK.

I mean in GX you never get the feeling that Judai cares about his friends in the first place. In a way I guess it's accurate to how college roommates are.

It's not like Arc-V where Yuya and Yuzu's friendship with a literal nazi makes him a good guy and it feels completely realistic.

I don't care for Judai much but he save saved all his friends multiple times.

Oh he's not a bad boy, but I never felt his bond with Syrus and Big titty Kaiba Joey Girl.

Even Manjourme was less of a rival and more of a very interesting side character.
