I always liked it. I thought it was kind of neat how the first big story was them learning to come together and being stuck under the reputation of their predecessors.
I read awhile back that it was originally going to be a continuation of the first series but since one of the actresses was retired the other didn't want to do it without their partner. So they retooled it and made it it's own thing.

I haven't read them but I understand Kei is the focal character in the novels too. Though her being the protagonist really only holds to the first series where it then shifts to a more solid team dynamic.
I do wish we got at least another set of OVA or movies though. There's apparently some manga and audio dramas too. I feel like the new pair could have at least carried as much as the old did. Shame they never got their Project Eden.
