This is clarified in recent chapters now that Rei has finally confessed to Hina, but they have a 4 year age difference. And their peers do express some surprise at the idea of them entering a relationship with their kind of age gap, but it's more in a teasing kind of way, not in genuine disgust.

There's a scene at the end of chapter 52 in volume 5 that if you view knowing what happens in later chapters, is clearly meant to be a marriage proposal expressed as best as an autistic guy like Rei can manage. Later on he makes it crystal clear.

Problem is I read the manga and it was better
Anime being double cour had too slow pace often.
Some arcs were just dull.
Overall it was better than nothing.

I find it a little strange how many Western viewers don't pick up on Rei's feelings for Hina being more romantic than sisterly. The depiction is subtle but it's there from early volumes and builds up over time. Is it because their age gap makes it too taboo to consider?
