Yes it was, the villages were in a hostile arms race against each other, the sand, the sound, the rain and the cloud especially were trying to keep up with the leaf's advancement in the strength of their army and society. Naruto's own reign is a true peace because the villages are officially allies of each other, through on the political side of it, it's only possible because Naruto himself is billed as the world's savior, that allows him alot of clout with public opinion and a light novel goes into detail with how this can only work for so long because Naruto is a poitical idiot and while the leaf is expanding and gaining access to all sorts of previous village secrets and powers the rest of them are either stagnating or not growing at the rapid pace of the leaf and it's starting to piss them off. Resources, Influence, Money and Fighting Power, those vital to a successful village and as they start going away of course that's gonna make the leaders and population of those villages start growing hostile, so how do you solve such a thing before it turns violent? The answer is you can't, even our world today is full of that shit even the United States is starting to behave that way because China is moving in on their influence and their current administration is actively antagonizing allies for their leaders personal gains rather than their countries thus why they're trying to start a war with another middle eastern country and to a lesser extent, a third world shithole

The Chunin Exams didn't actually make much sense if you thought about it too hard. Why the fuck would any nation trust a rival nation with proctoring an exam that determines the promotion of their genin? One in which their genin will get targeted and could very well get murdered by enemy agents who are encouraged to do so?

There were only 153 participants in Naruto's Chunin Exams, and only 10 were allowed to make it to the final round (they were actually surprised that 21 genin had made it past the second round, so they kicked out half of them for no reason), meaning that not many people can become a Chunin each year.
But then we get to the War arc, and there are suddenly tens of thousands of ninjas. These numbers just don't add up.

This part is even dumber. Why the FUCK would you want your future soldiers to kill their best friend? Not only is it traumatic, all you're doing is creating a culture where soldiers feel no comraderie for each other, which is something no Army would ever want to happen. Creating a "brotherhood" is one of the many ways in which militaries indoctrinate their soldiers.

Yagura was said to be a young adult, and only had the appearance of a child.

The mist doesn't seem to be as rich as other Major villages so they probably focused more on trying to make 'killing machines' rather than soldiers. They wanted to destroy any hesitance towards killing in their ninja.

Orochimaru had a sad backstory and eventually helped end the war. He's not unsympathetically evil. Hidan thought Shinobi only lived to kill and was displeased by his village reforming from a ninja village to a tourist attraction and killed his neighbors and deserted the place and started killing people in the name of an evil god. From everything we know, Hidan was as evil as they come. Nothing sympathetic about him.

That a ninja world is fucked up was the whole point of the Wave Country arc, so it's a reasonable conclusion (I mean, soldiers usually don't die in training, and you don't go for a kill during a war game). Though as the plot progressed, it looked like only about five people are actually fucked up and responsible for all the evil in the world. Even Bloody Mist was retconed to be all Madara's manipulation.

I don't think it was as young as 4, but anyways Itachi still had formal training and graduated the academy, passed the chuunin exams, and gained entrance into ANBU based on his qualifications. He was a child prodigy. In the warring clans period it seemed like they would just slap a kunai in a kid's hand as soon as he could walk. At least that's the impression I got.

Hence it's not really the village who serve the nation, but rather the other way around.

The greatest problem with Naruto is that the central moral core of Naruto himself as many of the villains is supposedly about the world being terrible and needing to be radically changed. But the series cheats and never really commits to the world being as shitty as all that. The flashbacks meant to show how evil all sides are cheat by either using one of the very small amounts of irredeemably bad characters who are typically atypical of the ninja world anyway (being criminals or traitors or what have you) or are faceless nobodies who show up just to be evil strawmen. The villages are shown to cooperate, they hold tournaments that let each village literally see what the others have to offer. The Hokages for the most part don't have much animosity so much as rivalries. Kishi wanted a highbrow moral, but also wanted the series to allow kids to easily self insert as a happy go lucky ninja who mows lawns and shit for a living.

It needed to be written as a shitty dystopia from the start. And in some small ways it kind of was. It's pretty obvious that Itachi was intended to be a true villain that painted a portrait of someone corrupted by this dystopian, violently competitive world and ninja warfare. But he chickened out. Kishi is a hack.

What would be the point? The Kage and the hidden villages focus on diplomacy with other kage and hidden villages while the daimyo keeps up appearances in the civilian aspect. By being 'subservient' or at least listening to the Daimyo, it gives them more credibility in the eye of everyone, I guess.

I don't think Kishi even thought about this beyond superficial levels, given how the story was supposed to be finished. That's why Boruto is an insult to the franchise. Then again, systems can't be changed over night. It's pretty apparent that he got clans to change, and that his efforts will lead to better diplomatic relationships between the hidden villages and nations. But everybody realizes that once he's dead, that connection will also be gone. So I guess his primary goal is not to change the foundation of the system, but rather to establish such strong bonds between the villages that there never will be a conflict again, simply becuase the general populous won't have it. Terrorists roaming the world isn't something he can really do anyhting about. It's different to our world. In our world, terrorists need supplies, hence they are mostly government funded. In Naruto's world, all they need is to have been trained.

Naruto only said he'd change the Hyuga. He never mentioned changing the system. His dream was to be the Hokage. He never thought much deeper about it.

On the surface you have good guys and bad guys, but if you look "underneath the underneath" you find that the good guys aren't so virtuous and the bad guys aren't so wrong after all.

As a reader/viewer I support Naruto inasmuch as I don't want to see him die and I do want him to achieve his dream of becoming Hokage and being acknowledged. I think that's the way they want you to support him. That doesn't mean the story wants us to support all his opinions and beliefs without question, because it clearly goes to great lengths to show us that the villains are right at least about the state of the world. The seeds are planted since part one that maybe the world of magic ninjas isn't so great.
