I agree completely.
Of course when KanColle started out many of the designs were not very extravagant, but well thought out in many cases.
They had no clue whether this would be a success and limited funds.
As time went by and it took off they put a lot of money into it though to produce more remarkable designs as well as amazing seasonal art, character songs, 2 seasons of anime (soon anyway), and a movie.
AL on the other hand just jumped on the bandwagon, and in their attempt to compete tried to dial the waifubait designs up to 11.
As such pretty much all AL designs are fancy somehow, but many also are incredibly cheap,
while KanColle has many plain designs left over from the early days, but at least there is consistency and a little depth to them, with fairly varied personalities, voicelines and meme-potential poi without going overboard poi.
That said, in terms of gameplay AL might well be better. But this alone, combined with their in-your-face art, will not let them beat KanColle, at least not in Japan.
