I think the reason the question is stupid is because it's literally answered in like Chapter 6 which has already been adapted in the anime so you can't not know without being retarded. But, I think the tricky bit aesthetically that people can't get their heads around is that Tanjiro is specifically a country bumpkin protagonist and not the modern Japanese citizen and that all the important characters in the stories are part of institutions and lineages that have remained unchanged for hundreds of years which is why they are behind the times. I don't think the series does a good job at all with showing how modern Japan actually was at the time since this series takes place even after something like Golden Kamuy which feels pretty modern.

This is true, the setting in KnY isn't very well defined. I mean it's 20th century Japan but you really don't know where anything is in relation to anything else. IE, Oyakata's mansion was supposed to be hidden from even the pillars, but they all happened to be within range when Muzan attacked? It's confusing.

By his own definition, it was an asspull that Kanao stumbled upon Douma just as he was finishing up with Shinobu. It was an asspull that Tamayo first appeared just as Muzan ran away. It was an asspull that Tomioka appeared just as Nezuko became feral, etc.

Yeah, the series really seems like it takes place within a single prefecture but clearly it's meant to be implied it's all over Japan. I think the problem with the manga is there's no way to make regular humans travel fast like flying or portals or whatever so everything that happens has to be in running distance from anything else. When Shinobu and Tomioka were at the mansion and sent to kill Rui, did they really have to waste time being led around blindfolded before they could go to the mountain? Surely they could recognize natural landmarks as they are at the mansion? I don't think it actually makes sense at all that the Pillars don't know where Ubuyashiki is. I could accept they don't know precisely where the swordsmith village is until they've spent time there but Ubuyashiki should clearly just be well-protected, not unknown since they all have been to where he is. It's one of those things that shows the series was written on the fly like most serials, originally he was supposed to be a big mystery that nobody knows about and then it turns out everyone knows him. Their method of hiding him doesn't even make sense because all it takes is someone in the organization being tailed for a while.

I think they knew he was luring Muzan in so they were within close range guarding it they just didn’t realize (except for Himejima and Tamayo) that he was planning on blowing himself up. Also I’m sure the butterfly estate is pretty close to the mansion since Tanjirou was carried back and forth.

The anime literally has segments titled “Taishou secrets” which is something like 1910 to 1925. I think the way is that it’s not modernized is accurate because really most of Japan remained less developed like this apart from the cities which we briefly see. It’s also worth noting the town Tanjirou is from had power lines.

As for where it’s taking place, they visited Asakusa and Yoshiwara which are both near Tokyo.

He’s the closest to getting to the same supreme territory as Tanjirou, since he can sense it easily, so being able to erase his killing intent would be a way he could kill Douma.

The manga has Taisho Secrets as well, but I think foreigners can be excused for that. It's not the most famous period of Japan. The name doesn't even imply it's a time period. The point is there is directly a situation in the exam arc (which has become a small meme) where they explicitly establish the series is taking place around 1910-1916.

Yes, the way the manga appears is accurate for the story it is trying to tell (a story of characters and legacies that are hundreds of years old and a network that is totally underground and secret from regular society) but it is totally reasonable people are confused by it. Mainstream Japan was way more modern than what this series suggests. Rurouni Kenshin takes place 50 years before this and is way more modern, Golden Kamuy takes place a few years earlier than Kimetsu and may as well be taking place in like 1995 in terms of modernity. Kimetsu completely sidesteps the implication that a government even exists in Japan, so it makes even a series like Blade of the Immortal which takes place maybe 100 or 150 years earlier seem more modern than Kimetsu.

I was personally shocked to see power lines in the first episode because they weren't in the manga and Tanjiro is so shocked by things like seeing a city or a train that it seems weird he's aware of power lines.

The locations are kept very vague, yes we know some places they went but I'm pretty sure in that Tomioka gaiden, he and Shinobu were in Hokkaido. That's an insane implication of how much of Japan they are covering, considering they just run around everywhere and have such a small amount of people. They never actually act like they are more than a short run from each other.

It would be so rushed it would be the equivalent of just cancelling the manga and giving a list of descriptions of what the characters went on to do. Some key characters have yet to even be established in any way, most haven't actually accomplished anything yet and the core struggle of the series has never even been brought to the forefront yet let alone resolved. Either the arc would skip over everything and just leave everything to the readers imagination or it will stretch this arc well past its expiration date until everyone wants the manga to end because the tension's gone. So I'm at the part where they introduce the rest of the Pillars. Can I expect them to get fleshed out properly later, aside from Giyu? It's doing that thing I hate where characters are just shown with like one whole personality quirk or trait that gets ran into the ground.

Yup, we learn more about the others later on. They did go kind of too hard on the 'wow look at my specific annoying personality quirk' bullshit with the Pillars at first though, I remember thinking it was really tiresome and cliche.

All of them get revealed to be good guys later but after personal clashes with Tanjiro (which was already what happened with Tomioka in the first chapter).

I'm very confident 4 and 9 will be dead or retired. That will leave 5 open spots for everyone who passed the exam together. Though I have no idea how Inosuke, Zenitsu, and Genya would work as pillars.

I think it's because no one really questioned why Nezuko helped humans to begin with after just two chapters. Its worst sin is over explaining something that didn't need to be explained. It being an asspull just kind of flies past.

These guys are my favorite group dynamic in a shounen since Vegeta, Gohan, and Krillin in the Namek saga. Three guys who operate on different levels of idiotic logic.

Would you call that an "asspull" though? I think it's more like a convenience of the plot that requires you to suspend, but not necessarily a straight pull from the rear.

I think it would have been nice to see more pillar activities,like maybe them going on missions without the boys and giving us a taste on how they normally operate. Giyuu and the wind pillar sparring was so cool and I wish there was more like that.

It would be nice to see that, but it would be hard to fit that into the regular manga since all of the focus has to be on Tanjirou and Nezuko. Hopefully there will be more gaidens.

Kimetsu Kitan and Sumi no Kagutsuchi are both pretty good, but I think Kimetsu no Yaiba was probably the best of the lot.

We were already shown that his area clear attack does well against the ice when it's spread out, that alone will force Douma to fight a certain way, and the more options they cut off, the better chance they have of getting a shot at his neck

It seems like this dude is putting in zero effort still, he dicked on a pillar, and in this fight he grabbed her sword out of her hand and moved back to where he was standing faster than she could react.

My bet is that Shinobu was poisonous and he will lose strength as fight goes on.

But will he be able to fuck around when one attack won't work on both of them at the same time?
