I wonder if their appearances are linked to the suffering that brought them to their eclipses. Lets take griffith, or femto as an example since we know exactly what his deal is. His face is covered by the falcon helmet, like the mock one he was wearing after the tortures and which probably concealed a lot of his wounds, so his appearance is linked to the low state he was in immediately before ascenscion. Maybe Void was tortured similarly, if he's the one Mozgus talked about in then he was known as a wise man. His disfigurements are mainly his eyes sewn shut, mouth flayed and of exposed brain, which if based around the theme of wisdom mean insight, speech and of course the brains link to intelligence. He could have been mocked or punished for his wisdom through these tortures.

Slann clearly has something to do with sexuality, maybe she was raped or whatever, and to me Conrads face looks like a plague-bloated corpse, and he's linked with rats. I have no clue about ubik though.

Th first berserk chapters were interesting, with each one getting closer to the root of the godhand. What happened ? Berserk has lost stem. Too much gore, not enough story.

In my head the early backstory is something like this.
Gaiseric was the previous incarnate fifth God hand - Skull Knight. He somehow caused the fall, both of his kingdom and the other 4 God Hand of the old cycle (together they are the five angels that came down and blew shit up).
Void become the first new one and his enemy.

I don't remember; i haven't read berserk for ages, but it could be an pattern by miura even if there's nothing in the story that makes the godhand look how they do based on their backstories. The falcon helmet is his original helmet aside from the mock torture device as well, but I got the idea from how fucked up 3/5 of the god hand looks, it's not really something you'd imagine someone to choose when turning into a demigod. Conrad also gives off a monkish vibe to me, with those clasped hands.

Judging by the fact femto resembles Griffith's body when he ascended (the hawk helmet), I always speculated that Void was probably being tortured to death when he ascended (exposed brain, peeled back facial skin, eyes sewn shut)

I think it's probably reasonable that Void and Slan have something to do with the Holy See and some kind of heretical cult respectively. When Mozgus is talking to Farnese up in the Tower of Conviction he tells the story of a sage who professed King Gaiseric's sins to God and summoned four angels to deal out divine punishment while he got totured. Void can fit this because first, his nose is missing, his lips are pulled and his gead is spilt wide open, and the godhand obviously take somekind of influence from their human forms. Void, when spreading his arms out, with his cloak and everything looks eerily similar to the Holy See's Idol as well. And since he's the one who chants the Invocation of Doom and dubs Griffith Femto we can assume he's the leader of the bunch, or rather that he is the first after the previous set died. Plus, Skull Knight has some obvious animosity towards him and for a long time now SK has been thought to be Gaiseric. Slan, by the same logic, also appeared as the Goddess of Flame im the heretical cult's cave during conviction. The cult's orgies and her general promiscuity makes me think that she's tide to paganism in the same way that Void is tide to the Holy See. No clue about Conrad or Ubik though.

I imagine Void thought he was smarter and wiser than anyone of his time and eventually saw too much, which eventually lead to his downfall when just being wise wasn't enough. Ubik on the other hand seems like the type that was curious and ambitious. Knew what the Godhand were from the start and actively sought to create the circumstances for ascension.

I'd think what all of them have in common is that they were the greatest and most charismatic visionaries in their time. Geniuses that reached the pinnacle in one field or another before it came crashing down on them and turned their enormous pride or righteousness or fame back on them like a dagger to the heart, coated with some poison of their own unique design.
