S3 is mostly anime original, which was kind of poorly received. The author owned to it and had to make some time travel plot in the BD extra short stories in order to fix things while not totally retconning it. S4 had to patch things up by way of episode 0 retconning the canon timeline back in so they could pick up the pace from episode 1 forward.
