Well alright, I put it after Nozaki-kun.

I doubt what subs you use matters much. The release I'm using isn't Coalgirls but the subs are labeled as Coalgirls. It's Haibane Renmei S01 480p Hi10p DVDRip FLAC2.0 x264 [CTR] (English Dubbed Dual Audio), though I went through and removed the dub to save some space.

You can get a bluray release if you want, and it's filtered and looks a bit clearer but it apparently introduces some artifacting that can be distracting for some people.

I honest to god tried but it just couldn't keep my interest.

I watched it but it didn't really do anything for me.
Maybe it'll be better on a rewatch.

Haibane Renmei affected me like no other piece of media has, it's an absolutely wonderful show that will always hold a special place in my heart. I don't think you should force people to watch it though, just mention it so they're aware of it when they feel it's their time to watch it. I don't mean that in a pretentious way or anything, I just don't think it's something to watch on a bored whim.

The town might not be purgatory but it's probably similar enough that it doesn't really matter. Same with the Day of Flight, it's some sort of ascension but they could be going to heaven or reincanating. I don't think the black wings are due to suicide though, I think it happens when a Haibane regresses to the mental state that caused them to die and go to Glie. Rakka became depressed and lonely because she felt that Kuu had abandoned her, similar to how she felt when she died, so her wings turned black. I don't believe that Reki was born sinbound either, I think it happened shortly after her birth when she woke up alone in a dark, boarded up room.

How could the same guy that wrote the plot for this series create episodes for shit like ReRide?

Until episode 10 is the best anime ever made, shit is just fucking amazing, I have no words to describe it, then the last 3 episodes are the worst shit ever made, is like the staff didn't realized this was a 1 cour show until they started working on episode 11 and were like "well fuck, what do we do now" so they came up with the worst possible conclusion on the hurry, just keep in mind that the only way to be fair to Angel Beats is judging the last 3 episodes separated from the first 10, but yeah, totally recommend you to watch it yourself.

Are there even any novels? I have something called Despera downloaded and it looks more like a glorified artbook that has what's probably some background text but nothing significant.

I watched it after i saw Texhnolyze because someone here said it was similar. It was boring as fuck, should've dropped it half way when i sensed there would be no real pay off - I was right.

What version and what sub do you recommend? I read in desuarchive that the HD version is somehow fucked up, so I was gonna get the 480p Coalgirlssubs one uploaded by CTR, whatever that is.

That's the one I have and it's good. I didn't notice anything wrong with the bluray version but I had seen people saying it had visual artifacts. It certainly looks less blurry than the DVD version. But with the CTR version, the subtitles in the first episode up through the title card aren't in sync. That and the subs for signs are the default subs. But other than that I didn't see any issues with it.

I heard the cestfait version was best, it's the only one I've seen though so I haven't got anything to compare it to.
