Scanlation Thread

Does everyone mostly just run a photoshop action to clean the pages nowadays? If so, what photoshop action do you use for cleaning?

I purchase digital so no cleaning at all.

you should post red english text over the black japanese text and call it a day.

Yeah, I think alot of people just either use ebook raws or just crack the drm on the magazines digital releases. It sucks for people who still have to buy the magazines though. You'd think everything would be available digitally nowadays.

But I was going to post white english text over the black japanese text and call it a day.

Aren't almost all of the available though?
How many of them are actually worth their money is a completely different issue considering 1200px and all.

I don't think Young King Ours is available digitally, which is why Drifters scans are always so flawed. The rookie who batched released chapters of it recently is even worse. He might be well intentioned but he has no idea how to clean at all.

That's definitely available digitally. I saw rips of Planet With in some of the threads last year.

You can get Young King Ours series digitally in their volume releases, but that means not staying current and waiting for volumes to come out. That would suck for Drifters since the author releases a volume about once every 2 years or so.

There's also a phone app for the magazine, but it's low rated. I'm not sure if it only has volume releases or current releases though. It's region locked to Japan and it requires android 4.2 to access, which means you can't use region changer for BlueStacks to access it. There might be a workaround, but I'm not sure what it would be.

Can't really reliably run an action on color pages, and with my current projects, it's all color pages.

>what photoshop action do you use for cleaning?

One that was posted here some time ago, it reduces the time to clean simple bubbles to mere seconds no matter how many there are.

Is it from the (Japan only) phone app or is it just some preview pages that the publisher sometimes posts on their website? There's no kindle version available and Anime Ace Scans said they couldn't get the release out for months due to not being able to get the magazine.

Check out qoo app

I didn't look around too much but all I saw were the volume releases of the series there.

This is going to be hilarious if none of the groups translating it know that there's digital copies of the issues. But if it's phone scans they're probably low res. And I'm not a fan of people using waifu2x.

The shounen gaosha app? Don’t bother, it’s crap.

Low res as expected.

This sadly looks better than anything any of the groups working on Drifters have released. So hopefully they can get someone to give then raws or someone tells them how to access the shitty app.

The app is about as insecure as can be. Wireshark is all you need. Who needs https anyway.

Besides the low resolution, is there anything else bad about the app? If not then I might start reading it on my phone.

I clean manually because I have no idea how to do it otherwise.

I just checked it out, it crashes all the time over here.

can someone just tell me what steps are in the photoshop action for cleaning so i can make my own

SHHHUTTHEFUCKUP thats not the only app but its not good to talk about these thinks too openly.

Is this really an official app? The quality is worse than manga-one.

From what I've seen it seems most cleaners just do touch ups on digital copies now.

It's official. YKO advertise it in their magazine.

Anyone here can rip the last volume of Vampire Hunter D from Bookwalker? It's the only missing one.
global.bookwalker.jp/de2bf82e1f-7d14-49bb-bf34-a6613948234d/vampire-hunter-d-vol-8/

Is manga-one famously shitty or are is Young King Ours also available on manga-one? There's too many manga apps so I've lost track of what's on which.

Matey, you aren’t going to keep the way to rip from an app literally too stupid to use https secret. That’s just one step beyond right click and save.

Its amazing that people have gotten away with this with such ease, Its a phenomonon that needs to be protecc

I just named it randomly. most apps are about the quality of pic related and that's almost rock bottom. So if a whole company offering magazines for purchase gives you that crap from above, go figure.

Generally, the steps involved vary based on source material, e.g. a mag scan will have lots more to do than a digital rip. You can automate rotation and cropping if you like scripting, or use a third party program, but otherwise those steps are manual.

For generic cleaning, it's leveling the page to an acceptable level, so you'd either manually grab the values from one page in the chapter to use for the rest of the chapter, or be lazy and plug in generic values that work well enough for everything. If you're doing heavier cleaning, you'd throw in some filters like surface blur, unsharp mask, topaz, etc. All of these settings will generally port from one page to another in the same scan/rip, since same scanner or rip quality.

TL;DR Find settings that work for one page, extrapolate to all pages.

Yea it wouldnt be hard to find if one actually looked, its low profile is whats keeping it from harm. So its best not to bring attention to it.

and if the rest find out about it, then crackdowns will surely follow.

You should use MS Paint

People have been ripping manga-one for years, nothing happened.

it may not mean the end of scandalations alltogether, but it will deal a signifigant amount of damage to most of the systems already in place.

really?

I prefer to crack ebooks I buy, but I can see how the apps are convenient.

Any people who know Japanese here.

Translator/typesetter here

And yet most people doesn't realize it's possible or don't pay attention to phone scans. Waifu2x might get a bad wrap, but it can often have better results on phone scans than what an amateur cleaner can do on a magazine scan.

Sadly I think all the Drifters teams are old school and don't know enough about tech to figure out the phone app trick, so unless some kind user here wants to play raw provider it seems we'll be stuck with splotchy scans.

How does that work? I do it with a fucking brush. Takes like 30 seconds per page but if I could reduce that it'd help

I can never tell the difference between scan qualities with you people. Is this a bad scan?

It's alright, if a bit blurry on the smaller text. Thing is, if you compare it to fan translators for this magazine it's great. Their releases are full of a ton of discoloration and defects.

There isn't some nip still selling scans, is there? 1200px digital raws are awful but I don't want to cough up money to import magazines myself

>kanjitomo got busted on my machines (my tablet) seemingly out of nowhere
Well that motherfucking sucks. It's completely off when it tries to recognize any text, like an inch away from wherever the mouse is and it still recognizes nothing.

Shoulda practiced my kanji, I guess; though I can still use other crutch OCRs, KanjiTomo is just particularly useful.

Can you find it on kindle or ebook? If not, then depending on what he charges and the quality, you might be better off getting it from the Nip.

I spend around $40-$45 USD every time I want to import magazines from Japan, since amazon.jp makes you order so much worth of merch before they'll ship overseas.

Sure, getting the digital raws is no problem. They're just low resolution and compressed to shit. So scans are required. I don't know if there is still someone around willing to do that or if I'll have to resort to importing magazines myself.

Check the persons previous work if possible. They might use bad scanner settings or have a crappy scanner in general otherwise.

I've heard amazon.jp generally has the best quality ebooks for manga, since they typically just use what the manga publisher sends to them without changing anything.

I can't check anyone's previous work, I don't even know if anyone's still doing it or where to look for it.
Amazon not fucking things up with compression is neat but doesn't help when the publisher is only providing 1200px crap

Which fonts do you like to use? How do you differentiate speech, thought, narration, and shouting?

>1200px crap
If you think that size is crap then I assume my suggestion of waifu2x to enlarge it a bit would be unhelpful.

>Which fonts do you like to use?
Wildwords.

>How do you differentiate speech, thought, narration, and shouting?
Speech: regular black, thought: regular grey, narration: italicized black or whatever color the narration originally was, shouting: bold black.

I think this is the one he's talking about:

mediafire.com/file/61f8rymf6lacexm/Bubble_Mask.zip/file

Just use the magic wand tool to select the insides of the speech bubbles and run the action.

Waifu2X helps a bit as in it increases resolution and gives you space for typesetting but 764x1200 source material never looks good. Real scans look infinitely better.

Thanks, I hope I can put this to use later. Still need to go through 3 volumes of digital raws and everything that streamlines that a bit will end up saving reasonable amounts of time

If anyone's interested in the MangaUP app, you can full screen it and hit the printscreen key to get raws that way. That's how some user on got Arana raws.

Not him but can you do a quick translation of this?

Speaking of MangaUp, anyone found a way to force it to load JPEGs instead of that WEBP shit? One can't simply change the URL like in other apps.

>How do you differentiate speech, thought, narration, and shouting?
The same way the author does it.

Do you have Wildwords/Anime Ace/Manga Temple "Light"? Because that's how they do whisper. They also use a very different font for thought texts, which I guess would be the equivalent of a seriff one -- and seriff is never used in comic books or manga.

I usually just make masks w/the pen tool on a layer of white, which is the same amount of time but more clicks, I guess

WHY THE FUCK NO ONE IS RIPPING MANGA FROM CRUNCHYROLL LIKE TALENTLESS NANA?

I use Wild Words for normal text (Italic for thoughts), KG Red Hands for Narration/Titles and CCZoinks for shouts.
Although in the end, it depends on the manga, and sometimes I try to mimic the specific font used in Japanese if possible.

user, that's Chinese.

yep, pretty much

user I gave the Boku no Kokoro no Yabai Yatsu chapter to a while back, if you happen to be reading this, I did actually fuck up the script, so the pages are way more potato vision than they need to be. You should probably look for a different source.

And a word of warning to anyone fucking about with Python, save the downloaded picture like a regular binary file, anything else might try to encode it again and introduce errors.

When typesetting porn, do you also typeset the hearts in the dialogue?

You could just copy the original to a layer.

I was more wondering if I'd leave them in at all.
