Edgy mahou shoujo shows are among my favorite genres, though that's mostly just a subset of (possibly edgy) action CGDCT. Always need more of them, of course.

Because "magical girls played straight" is Precure's territory and Precure is airing all year, every year. Compare that to dark/"edgy" mahou shoujo, where there are seasons without a single one of them, or there's only one show in a given season.

Asides from that, Precure also serves as a useful baseline standard to measure other shows by, even though it was perceived to be unconventional at the time of its debut.

Mahou Shoujo: The Line

Madoka people tried and failed miserably to make a more realistic down to earth version of the magical girl then went full SO DEEP SO DARK by ripping off that one toku show.

Every show after that has been desperately trying to mimic the deep dark magical girl thing and failing.
Also the yuri shit is because lesbians and people who wish to push women into lesbianism to turn them into permanent debt slaves and brood mares who have no ability to interact with men or have children once they realize that they aren't gay just retarded and all fucked up and have a big powerblock and control over media.

Also Toei just runs shit when it comes to magical girls adn every attempt at bringing back tho old school orignals have failed miserably because they have no goddamend clue as to how to make them work with normal 2D and are resorting to crappy as fuck 3D crap and are not being true to the anime source material. Yes we all know about the manga but that shit doesn't fly well.

Yeah and DBS was shounen played straight till OPM came in and dickslapped their shit and put out a superior product.

SAO and slime looked good and were well animated, plus they were isekai with a gimmick, not as niche as mahou shoujo which has a more limited audience to start with.
Symphogear is a special case, it relies heavily on its cast of seiyuus and concert tickets, s1 didn't do particularly well on its own.
Each of them has many flaws but has at least one thing that helps them stand out and makes them more appealing.
