i remember watching season 1 when it first came out and thinking it was bad compared to manga. just one out of many examples.

S1 adapts around 32 manga chapters. We're up to chapter 117 now so you only need to read about 85 chapters before you're all caught up.
This is not just the best ongoing manga in my opinion, but one of the best I've ever read so at the very least, I can't imagine you'd regret reading it. Very tightly plotted story, and action and epic moments that feel totally earned.

Reading the manga has killed my interest in this series once the intrigue left

The first season of the anime is better than the manga at covering the same story. The second season is better than the first season, but the manga is better than the anime from that point forward.
My recommendation for getting into SnK would be to watch the first season of the anime, then reading the manga from where the anime left off in season 1 until you catch up, then going back to the anime to see how they covered it.

The entire series is a slow burn. I started the anime and didn't even like it until I got hooked on the mysteries like what is in the basement, where the titans are coming from, why there are titan shifters trying to destroy people within the walls etc. The mysteries are what hooked me.

I think he's asking, based on his experience, if the anime is whats bad and the manga is good.

Yes read the manga. Art is really crude at first and it still has some inconsistenvy issues here and there even now due to a lacking technique, but it's improved a fuckton over the years and many double spreads look genuinely breath-taking.
Outside of the art the story's a wild ride too, although I'd say it really only starts coming into its own around Clash (the arc adapted by S2) when more focus is given to the ensemble cast outside of EMA and the world within the walls gets further expanded upon in the following arc adapted in the first part of S3 which is a departure from the earlier chapters/episodes in approach and overall atmosphere but very much worth the read and rewarding in its own way (I think this arc was also when the author really took the character writing up a notch). The arc currently adapted is back to basics with thrills and action and has its moments of brillance, even if held down by a number small and less small contrivences.
Everything after this battle is pure unfiltered kino though, as the manga experiences a major shift which makes you realize chapters later that this is the true story the author always wanted to tell.

After that the quality gets worse and some things are changed, so read the manga and then watch the anime if you want.

I don't think he truly planned everything out, but he did plan enough. For example, i believe that the wall titans and the fact they could be used as WMDs were foreshadowed when Reiner shat his pants in the early chapters when he heard that steam was coming out of a hole in the wall when the garrison fired at Eren (Foreshadowing his motives for being inside the walls), as well as the cans found within Utgard in a foreign language (Foreshadowing that a society of humans that had techonology at least analogous to the 19th century existed otuside the walls). However, Ymir sounded like a complete retard after the basement reveal, it seems highly unlikely that a small wood could exist within a ghetto (Annie's home) and plot elements were dropped like "Armor Braun", so you can't say he really planned everything up, but he had a rough sketch.

Second time was in 116 when Yelena revealed Zeke's plan to the 104th. The whole page about the pregnancy was weird asf since Yelena framed it as a way for Paradis to die out peacefully, implying it wouldn't have actually been orchestrated to protect Zeke but in preparation for the euthanasia if it indeed was part of ZY's plans, and which already by itself throws Rogue's theory in the gutter. The problems with that assumption have already been pointed out though: if the pregnancy was planned by ZY from the start, then Ye clearly ommitted her involvement in it and her wording ("luckily"? "blessed with an heir"?) is all the more questionable. Moreover, it would imply Historia somehow went along with this plan on hooded-kun's (we all know it's Eren) advice, which would be completely OOC (both for Historia and for Eren who's against it) and which Yelena made no mention of either, despite having the perfect occasion to do so. Last but not least is why would Zeke still question whether Eren agrees with his euthanasia plan if he already went as far as getting the Queen pregnant on Yelena's suggestion in preparation of said plan?

tl;dr I feel ZY's involvement in the pregnancy has itself become debatable.

Yeah I feel like Yelena rejects the idea that the pregnancy is suspicious, more so if Eren is the dad that means the betrayal would be even more obvious. Also Historia popping kids doesnt make too much sense, is easier to just have one (two, maximum) and make her a mindless titan for 50 years, that way her heirs wont have to suffer so much.

Isayama has never gone on hiatus and his manga is finishing while remaining massively popular. Miura killed his own manga and it still has years before completion. Berserk might never be finished.

I do think he has a plan too, actually. My guess is that he came to a point where he believed Hange's idea (which was the only thing left they could potentially place their hopes in to avoid having to resort to the 50 year plan) would lead nowhere, whether in the months that passed between the train flasback and the railroad opening ceremony or during the ceremony itself. Which would be why he agreed to meet with Yelena, because he was pressed for time, most likely anxious about the danger Marley represented as well (which he already expressed in 106 after the first contact with the volunteers) and desperate to find something else. I can only imagine how much worse he must have felt when he actually learned about Zekes true intentions, since he was pretty much on his own to find a permanent solution for Paradis that wouldn't require a sacrifice he wasn't willing to make.
