I just finished watching this a couple weeks ago and I have some questions. I genuinely liked it and I’m strongly considering picking up the manga, so:
Do I need to reread the chapters of the manga that are shown in the anime or can I just start at the place where the anime ended? Also how many of the chapters does the anime cover exactly? Do you think Shaft did a good adaption? And finally, does the series get better or worse or remain about the same in your personal opinion after the point where the anime ends?

You should absolutely pick up the manga and while you don't need to reread the previous chapters you would miss out on some details. There are only 158 chapters and s2 leaves around ch90 I believe. While the adaptation was one of the best I've seen and stayed true to the original, the manga is still superior. It only keeps getting better with every release and best girl has been getting some romantic development.

Hina’s personality is sexier. She’s an actually well written strong willed, independent, and kind-hearted woman. I’m a total sucker for Mary Sues who still need to rely on others for emotional support and don’t fall in to the trap of being so totally self-reliant it just comes off as insufferable or annoying.
Honestly, I’m not even sure if this series would have been able to hold my interest if not for the appeal of her, and that’s not to say the other characters are in any way bad, but Hina is the primary reason I could truly start to get immersed in the series and learn to enjoy even the parts where she isn’t present.
