If it was a typical anime the church of terra would have been the big bad instead of bumbling idiots who got a lucky kill before the end.

Terra was the big bad to some extent. Reinhard and Yang's sides were both shown to have good and bad aspects and were fleshed out enough to be sort of co-main groups. The Church of Terra was some evil organization the entire series and terrorized both sides until they were finally extinguished.
