TF happened with ZZ?

How do you go directly from a grim semi-adult space opera to a saturday morning villain of the week, semi-comedy? Does anyone have the low down on wtf happened here? Its a little hard to swallow that this was a fully organic tonal change.

100% pressures from the publishers. It's even more jarring how Victory swiches back and forth between emotionally scarring people and pandering to toddlers.

It's literally a different show, what's the issue with a change in tone? Before Zeta you had 0079 too, that's a ton of episodes

gundam has always been a dumb kids show, tomino is a hack

ZZ keeps its comedy aspect to some extent but it gets more in line with Zeta or 0079 later on.

This is exactly how 0079 and Zeta play out too though. They're more serious but that doesn't change this aspect. And Tomino was specifically required in Zeta to have a mech battle in every episode, which leads to a lot of pointless battles in it.

Tomino gave Sunrise the toy commercial they wanted after getting the green light for CCA.

The first several episodes of of ZZ were fun and way better than the slog that was Zeta.

ZZ's cast is way better than Zeta's overall.

tomino describes the series exactly like that too though

Tomino had temporarily recovered from his depression and thought that Gundam targeted the wrong demographic, so he tried giving it a comedic twist. It doesn't last too long though and quickly falls in line with the rest of the series.
