The narrative has gone very far downhill post timeskip, and even the pre-timeskip arc formulas are generic and repetitive. It's meant for children and adults that grew up with it.

If you do decide to read it, read through the end of the first major arc (Arabasta). If you don't enjoy that, you won't gain anything more from the series other than some world building and extremely surface level political intrigue that amounts to "government bad, freedom good".

I have a friend that pushed this series on me hard. I could only make it to Punk Hazard before calling it quits. I enjoyed some of it, but not enough to keep slogging through it.
