I wouldn't say only, because Misato had her goofy nee-san act and tactical insanity, and Shinji would snap and go on roaring charges when he wasn't too depressed to move, but it's because she's meant to be a difficult and continuing challenge introduced after Shinji has gotten pretty comfortable with everybody else around him.

Asuka is the only main character with energy in Evangelion because she wants attention and will do anything to get it.
She doesn't really appear much in the show, making her appearance feel fresh. If anything, Evangelion sucks when Shinji gets a huge amount of screentime without interacting with anyone.
