You're right, it goes both ways.
It's interesting, because Automata and Metal Gear are games that people consider very "western", as in not being what most people expect from the Japanese games.
Though culturally makes sense, to be honest. Japanese people do enjoy cute stories more than sad ones.
The thing is, Japanese do that themselves, and us too. They see certain anime and movies they make as very "western" like with the games I mentioned before, and they think that because they're dark, or touch sensitive topics, whereas we can consider certain media as very "Japanese" for being cute or for the artstyle.
