Female characters in Shounen

Why do they suck?

Attached: IMG_3232.jpg (1165x758, 109K)

OPM has based females

More people should read Saike, Ana totally owns.

Attached: 024013.png (891x1400, 201K)

Isn't every non-Saitama character in that series doomed to be overshadowed by Saitama?

Suck what?

Because all characters in shounen suck. Watch better anime.

Not all of them.

I read 50+ chapters and she doesn't seem that interesting yet. What's so good about her?

Attached: hmm.jpg (358x554, 75K)

it has literally one, the rest are meme characters and waifubait

but that's wrong though.

Because they depict females realistically.

It takes her a while to drop the "i'm just gonna be support" role, but once she does, she's the second most prominent character and probably the most developed.

Maka is so beautiful.

Like what?

the best!

And how long did that take? 200 chapters?

She starts getting relevance in the seabed temple arc which starts at like chapter 50-60.

Winry from FMA, while somewhat bland, has the rare quality of being useful

Jericho was cool, I wish this series still stayed as good as it was after the first season.

Because they're accessories for a childish male power fantasy, not actual fully realized characters.

Watch and see how many fags get triggered over that phrase.

It's true indeed majority of them are trash because most author just use them to be eye candy, but there are some good exceptions out there and it's always fun to find it.

But she never really fights

She supported Ed both emotionally, becoming his rock of normalcy that he was striving towards, and through her servicing his automail.

I think the point of this thread is to complain about how female characters hardly get any depth or excitement.

every female character in FMA has depth, because unlike most shonen, it's actually good

Other way around. All he does is meme punch.

It's annoying how often girls get paired off in battle, or are only allowed to win against the female villain of the group.

Whatever you say, they definitely don't get any excitement though lol.

A lot of the time its because the authors are catering to a demographic that doesn't read their work. Most readers of shonen manga are over the age of 16 whereas most shonen manga from what I can tell are more directed at those 15 or younger - kids that are still somewhat uncomfortable with girls. This leads to authors avoiding prominent female characters in their works because they view them as 'turn-offs' to the readers.

Also there seems to be some ignorance that close to 50% of readers for most shonen manga are female.

The final reason is that most of these comic artists are 'nerdy shut ins' in many ways and may not have a significant amount of experience dealing with females.

>Most readers of shonen manga are over the age of 16 whereas most shonen manga from what I can tell are more directed at those 15 or younger
Which is weird because shit like JoJo has content that would be rated a hard R in the west. It's almost like the demographic doesn't even matter at all.

The second season was better than the first what the fuck are you talking about?

They should try appealing to tomboys more.

>Also there seems to be some ignorance that close to 50% of readers for most shonen manga are female.
And most of those females don't give a shit about female characters. They aren't ignorant of this fact. Bakuman put it bluntly, they're not going to cater to girls because it's shonen manga and those girls would turn it to something unfitting if they had leverage.

>no replies
So much of your ebin trol, redditboy.

Hawkeye, Lan Fan and Mei all get tons though

They don't give a shit about the female characters because the characters aren't worth giving a shit about.

If I watch a show with a female dominated cast with an extraneous male on it, I don't give a shit about the guy because he's unimportant and not worth caring about. Instead I'll care more about one of the female characters because they're more interesting. That's the situation that most female shonen fans are in.

Shitty female characters aren't cared about by female fans, which editors and authors interpret to mean that women don't care about female characters which only perpetuates that cycle.

It wasn't a troll, I just expected worse.

Good on you.

JoJo was the exception to most rules about what shonen manga should be about and contain. That's why it eventually went too far and had to be moved to the more accepting seinen genre.

Ino was so much better than Sakura

Attached: 1425497498277.jpg (286x385, 47K)

No, girls only care about sweaty boys and shippershit. Your female power fantasies within male power fantasies will never because no one gives a shit. Go watch nu-SW or whatever capeshit, that's more up your alley.

OPM isn't shounen you tard

I don't know how large the Japanese or Chinese tom-boy demographic is, unlike the west were women are currently being told to throw off tradition, Japan pressures women to be far more conservative.

Attached: 1437344710713.jpg (632x640, 72K)

What do you know? You sound like one of those idiots who whine about fujos just because you're not one.

Its written for boys by manchildren.

Attached: what did hori means by this.png (540x730, 286K)

She pulls new spell out of her ass when she needs to

But I love women who can be awesome too. I can get a boner on two levels from sexy women doing badass things.
Just not stupid about it like 'Because she's Erza'

Because then it's either 'The woman stomps the man' or Videl vs Spovavich

Like I said before the lack of interesting characters and plots for females in shonen manga, which is by far the most popular style of manga, is the reason for Japanese women focusing more on "sweaty boys and shippershit".

Whenever I consume media directed towards women its not uncommon that I end up focusing on specific aspects that are not the central point of said media. Often times I enjoy it for the eye-candy more so than the plot - in a not dissimilar way to 'fujos' in manga.

I don't particularly enjoy superhero movies and I could take or leave Star Wars for what its worth.

>The woman stomps the man
What's wrong with that?

Attached: anaphone.png (187x164, 47K)

Aw, truth hurts babby's feewings? I don't have a problem with fujos. Unlike you, they have their priorities straight. They come to shonen manga for sweaty boys and leave satisfied. You ought to learn from them.

That's annoying because almost every manga has superpowers in it of some sort. Whenever there are super powers it doesn't make sense that the genders wouldn't be able to fight evenly - that's the point of super powers, that the fight is no longer a purely physical one.
JoJo got over this, but most manga seem to not be able to.

oddly enough, for all the time people spend bitching about female characters in MHA just being fapbait, it's one of the few shonen manga I can think of where female characters fight and beat a man

It's probably because Momo, who the audience is told is special, is a jobber.

>I don't particularly enjoy superhero movies and I could take or leave Star Wars for what its worth.
I totally understand this, manga are just so much more creative with fight scenes than westernshit.

Attached: uekiplus14.png (687x1100, 131K)

On paper many of the female characters can kick the ass of most of the men, in practice they never do nor will at this point, which is the problem. The last few chapters with Toga were the first time that a female character took nearly as much physical damage as a male character on screen from my memory, every other time the girl characters jobbed or took no noticeable damage being beaten.

>in practice they never do nor will at this point,
not true at all

I wish Ochako actually beat Bakugou in that festival, would've been great. The meteor shower thing would make a nice winning strategy too.

>Like I said before the lack of interesting characters and plots for females in shonen manga, which is by far the most popular style of manga, is the reason for Japanese women focusing more on "sweaty boys and shippershit".
Which is bullshit. You are assuming they are retarded like you and are coming to shonen manga for what isn't guaranteed to be there . They come to hot blooded battles between boys and to ship. This has long been the case. This is an undeniable fact that no mangaka or person who's followed shonen manga for any significant amount of tie could be blind to. They already have "interesting characters and plots for females". It's shoujo/josei manga. That is all woman there.

Just admit you want this and you can either look for better this than SJ, reevaluate your demands, or suck it up and eat some capshit because the West is actively giving you what you want because it's trendy.

Shounen are generalyly written by men for boys, both of which have barely any understanding of opposite gender. FMA is best shounen and it's written by woman. I'd also like to point out how Edward is a smart character while regular shounen protagonist is an glutonous idiot because authors pander to stupid people who read them.

Fujoshits are tumblr tier so get lost, man.

When do they, I haven't reread the series so I'm going off of memory here. Other than the French Twink being beaten by Mina or the Zealot on the Retard, what other female character beat a male character in a fair fight, not that 'Shroom trickery in the 2nd? round of the training arc.

I do remembere Toga killing a bunch of fodder villains but that doesn't count in my mind.

But westernshit lack the techniques that make manga so exciting.

Why do people even bitch about that? Female characters ARE NOT INTERESTING. Sorry to tell you that, folks. They're only good for sexual. It's the way it's meant to be.

Because these whiny faggots actively undermine any good about female characters because they don't fit their retarded ideals.

Who cares, not a single FMA character was beloved or not because of their fighting

I loved how Olivier Armstrong was someone who listens to MC instead of being dumb, unhelpful authority.

Why is everyone forgetting about me now?

Sakura is the product of the mangaka trying to pander to girls. She's fundamentally a basic shoujo protagonist.
>moderately pretty
>despite being so unremarkable, a number of guys are attracted to her to appeal to the vanity of the female audience
>not remarkable, doesn't really stand out in any significant way
>everything she eventually gets is a ripoff of other characters
>lusts for the handsome, popular guy, extra points if he's kind of a jerk
>has no high goals or ambitions, besides being knocked up by said guy
>even has rivalry with another girl over said guy
Of course she looks like shit in a shonen manga, Kishi deliberately designed her to make her accessible to a female demographic. Can't say it wasn't a success in that regard as evidenced by SasuSaku's popularity.

Why do you get to decide what's meant to be?

Attached: Ana4.jpg (645x302, 58K)

Nejire beat Bane despite him having a power that directly counters hers and being high on quirk steroids
Toga hospitalized Lock Rock and escaped from Aizawa's meme tape
Ochaco and Mina beat Monoma and Nirengeki in the joint training fight

57 is when tabata.said he decided to change her from a side character to a main character.

You can have the same exact "hot blooded battles" and the same latent homo-eroticism that people like and still be able to write characters of both genders competently.

Shonen manga is by far the largest genre with the biggest names. If you're going to read any manga at all its going to be shonen. That's why ~50% of readers are female. Shojo and Josei both have competently written male characters despite the female demographic, I don't understand why its difficult to ask for some level of parity between genres or skill in authors.

I don't know why you're so caught up on superhero comics, I'm not a big fan of them. Japanese comics have more variety and style to them, that's why I read them. Its for the same reason that I prefer Western television and film to Japanese television and film, the quality is just higher.

It's understandable 90s shounen sucked at making likable female characters because they were still new at it. I think it took until early 2000s when they actually realized how to do it properly.

She changed from accessory to a growing character beside asta rather than behind him.

Attached: Screenshot_20190512-223942_Chrome.jpg (1031x1553, 599K)

Was the Nejire fight off-screened? I don't remember it.
You're right on Toga tho, she bounces between being one of the more interesting characters in the comic, and being a 'run of the mill' yandere too much for my tastes. But she is very competent.
I wouldn't call Ochaco beating Monoma a fight really, the guy just gave up, but she would have beaten him in a straight fight. The Mina and the fat dwarf fight was hardly an on-screen fight. We got single panels of a fight while the 7 Quirks drama was going on.

The Nejire fight is mostly off screened and easily forgotten because it's rendered immediately pointless the second it ends. It was just a plot excuse for the boss to have a body to fuse with.

As an MC, the character needs to be relatable for to your audience so having a female MC immediately alienates your predominately male demographic. Even if they're not male, they end up acting like men anyway which begs the question, why make it a female in the first place? Conversely, female MC's acting female can make the show unwatchable. Pic related.

They are less likable now, zoomer.

We need more based yandere in jump.

Attached: 1557477736436.png (487x278, 65K)

How? Back then they made bullshit like Sakura and Nami in an attempt to be inclusive but just fail. You can't say things have got worse.

because there are men who don't know how to write female characters, let alone actual stories in general. that's the simple answer.

>FMA is best shounen
Is this a joke?

the only series that's even arguably as good, let alone better, is Jojo

The hell is the manga you're reading? I literally dropped BNHA because I realized that I was a dumb fuck that decided to have a female character as a favorite and when I realized they wouldn't do shit with her or any of the female cast.

The sad thing though, is that I don't think you're lying, but instead genuinely believes that BNHA has good female characters which makes the situation even sadder when you realize that's the best female cast in anime/manga the average person will be exposed to.

Too fucking sad.

Black Clover has some decent female characters.

I didn't say the female characters in MHA are good, I said they beat men in a fight, which is true

MHA female characters ARE good, they act like real teenagers and have good traits, the problem is that they lack screentime/conflict.

Damn we're setting the bar low here.

This

This could be said for majority of female in shonen. Most of them have potential but are wasted.

You're right. The girls aren't bad, the author is.

What I can see here is that for many a good female character is something close to a mary sue or a man with skirts.

No wonder shit characters like Mikasa and Emma are so lauded.

Being a female character in JoJo sucks. To be fair, life sucks for everyone in JoJo. Except best waifuSpeedwagon. This is where you say, "That is true."

>Muh royalty
>Muh Asta
>Muh Tsundere
She's real annoying for a real long time.

What're your thoughts on THESE girls?
