Oh look cool a Re:Zero thread. I need to talk about this show because I’ve been watching it. Gosh is it unsatisfying how foolish Subaru can be. I’ve been watching him suffer for episodes upon episodes now. He keeps thinking he can change things while being as weak as he is. He has the disadvantage of no past because of this “Return By Death” thing from the first episode that I have no clue how he obtained it. No past equals no credibility. So nobody will help him or believe him. Everyone just knows him as a madman and a fool. This Betelgeuse guy is the worst. All I know is that Subaru has the element of Shadow, and that Emilia is a half-elf so that must mean she has a relation to this “Jealous Witch.” What is the extent of this curse that has been placed upon Subaru for so far what seems to be an unknown reason? Because now people in Subaru’s reality are even starting to forget things. Like they are forgetting that Rem exists. I just want some payoff already. I want Subaru to train and have a fighting chance or something. Whoever wrote the plot to Re:Zero loves to have the antagonist win at everything so far. The creator literally treats the protagonist like straight trash, and makes him act with hardly any logic or reason. I’m getting tired of it. Give it to me straight, does the anime do a bad job at explaining things or am I stupid for being so lost with this show at the moment? I’m not a manga reader, i’m on an anime binge but maybe the manga explains more. I’m sure it does. Anyways I need answers. I don’t give a fuck about spoilers right now. Subaru suffering is a big part of the show. Also he's by no means a perfect person and often times makes his misfortune worth due to his own failings. However if you truly think his behavior is inexplicable or out of line with his character then you are indeed being stupid in that regard. The things he does are usually reasonable considering his circumstances and only become unreasonable in ways that can be explained by his own flaws and mistakes. Or insanity - there's a fair bit of that when he cracks under the trauma.

Unfortunately you won't often see Subaru kicking ass because he is woefully under powered compared to the people around him. He's actually quite strong for someone form earth, but compared to the magically enhanced, crazy strong people he meets he's incredibly weak. You've already seen what winning loops look like though - he starts to get his head around the challenges and form plans appropriate to the scenario. As he recovers from all his painful experiences he gets on track and sets things up to pull of a win. It's quite satisfying to see. That said, he does get stronger over time in the novels - gaining a few unique abilities along the way.

I figured if he took the time to learn how to harness shadow magic that he would remember the techniques and teachings and be able execute them even after he dies and comes back. I suppose not. I don’t think his behavior is out of line but that he is too emotional at times and loses his cool. I’m actually a big fan of his forward method of thinking, his wanting to save people of the realm, and the way he stands up against all the political bullshit. I usually think he has the right idea and i like that he is a man of action. I guess Subaru is never is never able to get stronger to defeat his enemies as long as this curse persists. Some viewers would prefer for the MC not to be OP but Subaru is like an ant compared to almost everyone and everything he comes across in terms of strength and power. Ok going to keep watching now, not many episodes left. I’m glad it’s getting Season 2

Just finished watching that. It was Episode 18. Subaru says he still loves Emilia yet Rem still offered to help him and they can all get along. Pretty cool no hard feelings and everyone is cool like that

The scene comes off completely differently in the novels. Subaru was always thinking "Did he really deserve a girl like Rem?" or that he wasn't good enough for her. I guess there may be harm in telling you but the anime really changed things about Subaru and Rem's relationship, the anime director had a huge bias against her so every scene that Subaru would show affection for Rem was altered.

This sounds very reminiscent of one of my own posts, I'll try to elaborate.

When I said he stopped looking at Emilia after Arc 3, I meant that Subaru had stopped trying to fulfill his need of self validation from her. Subaru is a creature basically trying to validate his own existence and self worth, up until From:Zero he was trying to be "Emilia's Knight" as she was his Heroine like some cheesy LN. At From:Zero Subaru switches his target of self validation to Rem, he's so utterly dependent on Rem for that validation that he has a panic attack and faints when he doubted her faith in him.

He doesn't forget Emilia, just doesn't look at her the same way as he use to do. Instead of doing things for Emilia's sake he's sort of doing them for Rem's sake which may be for Emilia's sake. And he's totally in love with Rem, later down in the series is describes his feelings for her something along the lines of a "blazing inferno always burning in his chest".

This isn't quite true. He still clearly cares about her, and is ostensibly in love with her, but his obsession dials back significantly. There are also moments which could be read as him prioritizing his platonic interest in her over his romantic - at the very least the way he sees her has changed as he's gotten to know her better.
