ATTACK ON TITAN SPOILERS
In the basement they find out that ouside of the walls there is an entire world and that they actually live on an island the size of madagascar. They are part of a race which turn into titans which have terrorized the planet for 2000 years lead by the royal family who got the power of the titans from the devil of the world. They went to the island because 1 member of the royal family was a pacifist who recognised his people's crimes and just wants to leave the world alone. Problem is that the walls got the power of the coördinate which has the power to control all the titans, but also the millions of colossal titans hiding in the walls (As you saw in the season 1 ending). Using that coördinate could bring about the apocalypse on the entire planet, but to use the coördinate the founding titan (Eren) has to be in contact with a titan of the royal family. Grisha (Father of Eren) lived outside of the island in the normal world and has a wife (Dina Fritz) and a son (Zeke yeager, the beast titan). So Zeke and Eren are actually brothers, and Zeke is part of the royal family. The titan that ate Eren's mother was actually Grisha's former wife and Zeke's mother, which was why Eren could activate the powers of the coördinate at the end of season 2
