If you wanna be a popular WSJ series, you need strong beginning chapters/arcs to hook people. Once you do that, they'll deal with whatever bullshit may pop up later on in the series. A well made anime will also contribute to popularity by improving on that beginning that hooked people in the first place. Black Clover has neither a good start nor a good anime.

I know you're referring to the manga, but also, there is also a gap in the plots. One is about magic, never giving up on your dream (sounds like Naruto) and what not, the other is a lot more unique.

More emotion, sure (at least, at times), but there are many magic types that makes for more interesting fights than most things in BnHA.
I know many people bring it up, but I don't remember a single fight in BnHA that comes down to the same kind of coordination between powers that happened in Vetto vs Asta/Vanessa/Finral. Licht vs Yami also had many more interesting aspects behind it than a lot of BnHA fights, Yami should by all means be extremely slow compared to Licht. And he frankly is, but he manages to stand his ground thanks to having a good reading on his opponent and funneling his slow magic into a sword that he could attack quickly with. In the end, he effectively lost because Licht stopped giving a fuck and decided to range him down with something he couldn't deal with. Later, he made use of Asta being basically disabled to trick him into a proper loss anyway. I have never seen a fight in BnHA basically exist as a giant distraction to the real finishing blow.

Julius, Yami, Fuegoleon, and Fanzell kind of fit the mold because they all taught Asta something, but its not like an actual student teacher relationship. Julius and Asta aren't really on a personal level and Julius died with less characterization than All Might. Fuegoleon and Fanzel are personal, but neither have had a significant amount of screentime to further explore their relationship with Asta. There's been no real touching moments. Its even worse since Fanzel should arguably be Asta's true mentor figure since he taught him how to wield swords and all. Their fighting styles are closest. Yami is the best contender out of the four, but the relationship still isn't as strong as AM + Deku, and it feels more like Yami's story is being told alongside Asta's rather than Asta learning from someone who already finished their story.
Something like that, if he touches someone and starts to decay them, the lucky bastard who's in contact with him also dies, a chain reaction

BC becomes consistently decent while MHA flouders all over the place, but the problem is that BC doesn’t ever do anything really interesting or original. I think the current arc is fine but even recent stuff like Nero and Lumiere feels like a mishmash of what other shounens and fantasy plots have done before. There’s no really new takes on it, corrupted evil guy that used to be bffs with a good guy that has been hiding for many years, an animal companion secretly a cute girl, there’s nothing about the execution I would call great. It’s just decent, doesn’t change that I've seen it before.
MHA is a lot more uneven and isn’t very original either, but it executes some key moments better by putting emphasis on feelings and being relatable by having a more realistic setting. BC’s pacing hurts the investment you have in the characters, they get development but the plot marches on so quickly it’s hard to care for long.

It's definitely a mix of those for sure. The worldbuilding is definitely weak, but it was weak from the start so I kinda accepted it.
The fights can resonate emotionally, but the actual choreography behind it is generally not good. I still value emotion over spectacle though.
However its disappointing that the characters are just so unmemorable besides their design.
Momo is supposed to be a genius yet she never acts like one. Deku is still whiny despite being 200 chapters in. Uraraka is just another token love interest now. Bakugo is still treated like a stu, with most people just forgiving him for being an asshole.
Their are a couple characters that are genuinely well written, but the manga doesn't focus on them for long.

Quirks are muscle with limits depending on the generation (someone younger will 99% of the time have a stronger quirk).
Some train to the absolute limit (Endeavor)
Some waste it and only use half of the base power and not train it (Shoto)
Some were born without a magical quirk muscle and can’t get stronger

Think about it this way. If deku ends up getting into trouble and cannot win a fight, Horikoshi can just awaken a new quirk that will help him out. It creates a situation where the readers cannot ever worry about Deku because he'll have more quirks to save him.
It also creates a situation where characters like Bakugo and Todoroki will need immense powerups in order to even compete with Deku in any way. If they don't power up then they'll be irrelevant compared to Deku.

- hero academia is about characters overcoming internally-imposed challenges, which the reader/viewer can relate to because even if they're not a superhero they still know or can imagine what it's like to, for example, grow up with domineering parents, or be the school bully, or be the kid everyone picks on, or struggle with your own identity versus the family business. Black Clover, by contrast, is about characters overcoming externally-imposed challenges, which the viewer/reader can't really relate to, and instead has to root for the characters. This is difficult when (if you're not a child) you know that nothing that bad will happen or there won't be an issue next week.
tl;dr: BC is "can I do *this*?", BnHA is "can *I* do this?".

I personally like it because BC's story actually goes somewhere with previous chapters setting up future plot points and arcs ending super fast. I don't need chapter upon chapter of monologues from people's perspectives or battles that always end up with, "well you're strong but next time i'll be even stronger" without it impacting what may come in the future. Sometimes arcs just drag and MHA has a really bad problem dragging when it alternates to a "school" arc since nothing really comes out of it except that they're "stronger" now.

My point has nothing to do with the asspull way it was accomplished, it's the power itself and how completely fucking unneeded it is narratively. Again, I'm not against powerups, I'm not even against asspulls necessarily. But when you have a character who abides by a certain fighting style.
Gears are asspulls, but they all work off the basic property of Luffy being made of rubber and Luffy hitting hard and moving fast. He pumps blood faster through his body to move faster and punch harder, he inflates his bones to punch harder, he inflates his muscles to punch harder. Luffy's Haki enters his moveset almost 600 chapters in, after it has already been used by other characters and explained. It also doesn't come from his fucking rubber devil fruit.
Goku is a monkey. He transforms into a big monkey. He fights with chi like everyone else. We found out why hes a monkey, a transformation only for these monkeys is foreshadowed for an arc and then he predictably gains that transformation. It allows him to fight with ki better. Instant transmission is a stupid asspull, but it was a technique taught to him and introduced solely to streamline movement between locations.
Deku has a quirk that allows him to increase his physical stats. It is one of the best quirks objectively, literally no debate. The sheer force is enough that wind can literally be used as projectiles. Hes mastering it slowly, and fighting in his own style unique to All Might. Hes at 5 percent. 20 percent! Hes utilizing a new style with the gloves given to him by Mei!
He has 6 other abilities! Introducing the tentacle power, Black Whip!

Whilst they're all undoubtedly 'bad', the new faction (Quirk Liberation Army) walk the fence of good and bad too. They're actually hunting the villains, and attempting to reform the way society treats quirks so that people are free to use them when they please. Their group is made up of a huge number of sleeper agents and run by very high-ranking CEO's and Government officials.
Also the idea of what constitutes a Hero or Villain is one of the running themes of the manga

That's just it. OFA's strength powers are just that. Raw Strength. While that may be good for punching shit, it does little for other areas that Izuku would be weak as shit in.

If he just had 'Strength', his mobility, range, durability and support skills would be literally zero and he'd have to depend on 'support items' or be surrounded by people with supporting quirks all the time.

I explained it many times already. There are three big key factors to BnHA's success:
1) Catering to the Western :O face market, which also influenced Japan. Capeshit is popular in Japan also, after years of brainwashing from the West.
2) Extremely hot sexualized underage female characters. Hori is basically a hentai artist who tried to write a shonen manga. You might think this is silly, but lots and lots of people got into MHA through semi-erotic or outright hentai pictures of the female characters.
3) Possibly the best fujo appeal shonen character of the post 2010s - Katsuki Bakugo. He also has semi-appeal to the fringe of non-fujo women who primarily pretend to like MHA for attention.
Black Clover has none of these things. 1) is obvious. For 2), the only somewhat sexy outfit early in the manga is Noelle's. Vanessa looks like a cheap whore, so her wearing nothing but underwear is actually off putting for most viewers. And finally, for 3, there's nothing in Black Clover that could compare to the fujo appeal of Bakugo. Yuno is a very watered down version of Todoroki's fujo appeal (and Todoroki is nothing compared to Bakugo).
Furthermore, Black Clover's anime had an unbearably shit start, and Asta's screeching is like the killing blow for most people.
If you were to compare the manga vs the manga, Black Clover would probably be ultimately more popular, over time But due to the anime, BnHA will forever be superior to Black Clover in popularity.

Black clover has no good writing in it. All character interactions are rushed. Asta is too smooth as a character. All villians are introduced as some big badass and then usually defeated in a way that doesnt live up to their hype. There was the tree arc where the authour introduced character who were already freinds of the cast to make things eaaier... that's just lazy writing.
