More brutal events had been documented especially back pre ww2 and all the way up to the end of the 20th century. for obvious reasons documentation isn't very good for recent stuff unless something really blows up or it's been enough years that people don't fear saying it happened.

The Yakuza is an umbrella term for a large list of gangs. Fights, kidnapping torture and murder aren't unheard of. They are generally known to be more peaceful nowdays, with lesser punishments and less rowdy resolutions but this really isn't something too crazy to happen within the yakuza.

There's probably a lot worse things that happened there between rival gangs in the past 10 years than 3 guys getting tied up and butchered.

What I get from this thread is that delinquents are not nearly as tame as pop-culture would have me believe and that most of them are sick psychos that turn into violent criminals.

It's a lot more case by case basis, there's no brush you can paint all the troublesome teens of japan in.

If you can enjoy a mafia movie then you can also enjoy delinquent manga, its not uncommon for media to sugar coat things in order to tell a story

I often hear that the educational system in japan is extremely bad, but I don't know much further beyond that. I'm Moroccan but received an elite French education where pretty much everyone was throwing their money and soul. On the other side of the metaphorical fence, most of the people in public and most private schools did not invest themselves as much. It's hard to say but they're not as stressed because they have internalise the chasm between them and elite schools. The point is that the rat race is mostly a thing for the higher class in Morocco. Due to differences in living standards, I'd say it extends to the middle-class in France. Does the rat-race mentality permeate all social classes in Japan? What do delinquents that choose neither the salary-man life or the yakuza while conserving their anti-conformism end up doing? I could see anarchism as an extension of this phenomenon.
