Lying is not the same as deception, though some people think intentionally leaving out important information in order to mislead someone as lying, calling it lying by omission.

Kyubey intends to mislead the girls by leaving out the fact that witches are actually magical girls, despite them asking what a witch was. He's intentionally decieving. He knows they won't want to become magical girls if they knew they would become witches, so he leaves that part out.

A friend recommended the show to me and after watching it I didn't see why it was so highly praised, AOTC all time greatest nonsense. characters were unmemorable, cat shit didn't do anything wrong, MC threw away her life for nothing at all. Music was okay I guess.

The "QB technically never lies" meme is fake news and needs to die and stay die. He avoids lying most of the time, but there are times when he says things to the girls that he knows are outright false statements.

Credit where credit is true though, he doesn't do shit without their consent. That's the only thing in his narrative that even suggests that his species follows any kind of moral guidelines at all (whether their own or imposed upon them by some other entity). Apart from the consent issue, everything he does and says appears to just be his best effort to gather his energy and leave, as the consent thing and the energy production thing are the only consistencies between what he tells Madoka about their project in an effort to convince her to become meguca and what his actual actions are.

Hell, even the consent thing would be plausibly consistent with an interpretation that the consent only benefits QB somehow, e.g. because he's not even physically capable of doing it without consent or because it leads to better energy production that way, although his explanation of "we ask for your consent because we care about treating you well" is equally plausible.
