They were fucked by errors in judgment that they started with, the situation just exposed those and made their tantrums more consequential. To make it more general, something reflected by every character and directly addressed in the ending, it'd be something like perception and communication are necessarily limited and that's fine.

The point, stated by Anno, was to write a story that focused on depression and the detachment of people in modern Japanese society. This can be seen in how basically all the main characters in the show are dealing with some level of depression and feeling detached from society. It's just the most obvious with Shinji and Asuka. But everyone is dealing with it to some degree, except maybe class president and some of the secondary NERV characters like Maya and Fuyutsuki.

And all the mecha, angels, symbolism and other stuff were just put in because Anno likes them.

He didn't. Shinji is in every episode. Rei is not the focus. She just triggers instrumentality. The focus of the plot isn't on instrumentality though. It's focused on characters dealing with depression and loss. This is why Anno mocked the fanbase for needing a big flashy movie.

It's common knowledge. Anno was also in charge of the robots but other Gainax staff put together this monstrosity in an attempt to make the show cohesive.

Anno is the director, producer, lead storyboard artist and one of the writers. If you know how TV production works, getting a "teleplay" credit doesn't mean you came up with the story. It means you wrote the teleplay. And with TV animation, there's a whole extra step between teleplay and production. The storyboard, which Anno did mostly himself.

Basically, Anno wrote the rough story, others adapted it to scripts, then Anno adapted their scripts to storyboards and oversaw the final animation.

All the various interviews where he describes what he did on the show. If he was merely the director, he wouldn't have the control to just keep Rei from being in entire episodes someone else wrote. Or totally redoing entire episodes. Which is exactly what he's said he had to do. Especially episodes 24-26, which caused a lot of production delays and they almost missed the scheduled broadcast.

There's also plenty of storyboards of the show online you can look up. Which he did. He even did the opening of the show.

I didn't particularly like her voice but I appreciated her passion, even if she's a little too into it.
I doubt the new voice will be much better, so I think her not voicing Asuka is probably a loss.

He did scripting for the TV ending and movies with the scenes of Rei describing her own character. He has a writing credit for every episode, but that's for creating the show's concept. The lore changed completely from this and details aren't filled in, but the basic plot was in his proposal for the show with a characterization for Rei, an arc, the mystery to reveal about her already determined by 1993.

In the Hollywood system at least, there's a difference between "created by" and "written by" credits. Someone could create the show. But if they didn't write the draft story or teleplay, they don't get a written credit. Don't know if it's the same in Japan.

It's not deep unless you are very young and have next to no understanding of philosophy or psychology yet. A lot of the symbolism has next to no meaning and was just placed there because "It seemed cool" (in Anno's own words). The characters are well realized and a more realistic depiction (in regards to the original) than what you'd normally see in anime, that's where its strength really lies. That and some pretty cool mech designs and fight scenes.
