I always prefer smaller teams (3, 4 max) just because it actually allows everyone to get focus instead of having half the cast fade into the background. Also because less cures means a better chance of having relevant side characters and I fucking love me some relevant side characters in shows like this. I think this same mindset is why I prefer Rider over Sentai and also don't really care for the seasons that go full TATAKAE in most cases

3+1 is the best. 4+1 and 2+1+1 are also good options, but they haven't always been able to make them work.
Anything variation that adds up to 6 or more is too many. You just end up with two or three side characters who are only there to take up time in the roll call.

I went Heartcatch then Smile and I still enjoy other seasons, but if you're worried about that for an older type show I would suggest Splash Star or for a newer one KiraKira might be a good idea.

Not him, but I also think HaCha looks better than Heartcatch. The static character designs are a lot better in Heartcatch, but the animation wasn't really all that great. Pretty average most of the time, which is noticeably better than Fresh at least I suppose. In HaCha, there was tons of Sakuga spread out across the entire season from start to finish. Even all the stock footage was gorgeous. People just like to focus on that one episode of HaCha which is the most QUALITY episode in all of precure because of the shitty AD. On average though, HaCha was really REALLY pretty.

Now not meaning to contradict myself because they've done this before with Love and Setsuna but I'm just working with the reversal part. In other words it's because they done two extra cures with someone who wasn't a pink before that it can go the reverse to Hikaru or Elana instead.
