>state that multiple alien civilizations exist, all created similarly to humans implying that they are similar to us >created by a benevolent race that wanted them to help each other >none of them are ever mentioned in any way >none of them try to aid humans
Is Neon Genesis Evangelion the biggest example of wasted worldbuilding?
It’s the biggest example of wasted potential for an anime. The pacing was god awful in the middle of it and felt like a drag
Blake Kelly
Everything in Eva happens in a short 15 year period, and there being 2 seeds of life on one planet was something that was never supposed to happen, but Lilith was retarded.
Carter Rogers
NGE was an angsty incel lashing out at society. It got approval because it's edgy, and because it's cool. Then everybody decided to rationalize it as some great philosophical masterpiece. Sure, it might be a deconstruction of kabbalistic judaism but I doubt Anno even knows what that is.
Angel Hall
It's just a backstory. Like all fantasy, it all falls apart when you consider the universe outside of Earth.
Alexander Hughes
The middle is the best part you fucking nigger
Evan Hill
Watching anime just for the worldbuilding is pretty fucking lame.
Connor Smith
Mmm I sure do love the cult classic episode Magma Divers
I don't get why this is wish-fulfillment for incels or whatever. A girl falling asleep next to you like this just means she doesn't view you as a man whatsoever.
Michael Hernandez
I wouldn't even classify that as worldbuilding, it's the most obscure, out-of-the-way minor setting detail; without wiki diving you can only find out about that shit through obscure hidden lore files in handheld spinoff games and pachinko machines.
Daniel Ross
>tfw didn't mind Magma Diver that much, actually enjoyed it to some degree have I transcended, bros?
Any series that introduces alien life is bound to fall victim to this. Unless your show is specifically based around space and space exploration, you will never ever be able to acknowledge and learn lore about any of the literally limitless alien civilizations. Besides, evangelion is about the characters and their experiences, not worldbuilding.
Bentley Campbell
based shounenshitter retard. stick to isekai
Grayson Phillips
What exactly would they aid humans with? The angels are also part of this alien race so it is really just a civil war. And if we assume they are humaneesque we also have to assume that their technology can’t be that more advanced that they be capable of interstellar travel
Camden Williams
No, because the whole sci-fi thing is just a pretext to have the characters interact or go through stressful experiences, any worldbuilding would be extremely out of place.
Oliver Gray
"2deep4u" NGE fanboys like this are so fucking dull. The setting clearly matters and a lot of people took a lot of time and effort into creating it. Otherwise we'd just be watching 22 minute intervals of Anno pulling his pork on camera while talking about his childhood.
Liam Brown
Most of the alien setting was created after the show was finished for a game.
Jason Myers
>influence upon mecha genre outshone by Gurren Lagann and even Gundam >character designs and personalities no longer as unique so waifu value decreasing
>people still arguing about it 24 years later >still sells assloads of merch every year I dunno you tell me >genre >mecha pleb
Ian Nguyen
The show itself is pretty unfinished.
Asher Hall
You keep using this word.
Wyatt Flores
Not at all. I would argue that the later addition to the Eva franchise, aside from EoE, shows that the show was good as it was. And no additional information was ever needed.
Hunter Long
>Ayyvangelion at this point it might be no fucking joke
And you'd be wrong and I'd call you a crazy fanboy, hypothetically. They clearly ran out of money and time an had to cut corners here and there. That's why stuff gets added in the manga that didn't have a strict release schedule.
Joshua Nelson
What exactly do you believe they would have added to the show that wasn’t added in EoE? They still had a limited amount of episodes no matter the scheduling or budget. There isn’t really that much room too add anything substantial.
Leo Robinson
True, the show isn't even the same start to finish. >No reason for Shinji not to be training as a pilot from childhood >No reason for Asuka, or any pilots for that matter to be anywhere besides Japan >No reason for them to go to school >No reason for Rei to be at school especially >No reason for reason for Rei to live in an abandoned building
Then there's the whole Gendo thing in EoE that subvert the entire message of EoE,..
Leo Nguyen
There is also no reason to train Shinji from a young age. Yui took care of any problem that arose anyway. NERV and SEELE was lying to every one else about the angels. No one else knew that they were attracted to Lilith or Adam. Which is why other countries wanted a defense against them. There is no reason for them not to go to school either, and it was most likely beneficial to their mental health. The pilots were also fighting for the idea of a conflict free future in which they would still need the education. Thee is also no reason to restrict were Rei can live since she is loyal.
Luke Jackson
Shinji not training makes sense under the idea that Rei was 01's designated pilot until her injury forced them to bring in Shinji. Asuka being in Germany until deployment makes sense because they were still finishing 02 there.
There was no paticular reason for them to go to school, but it gave Shinji a feeling of normalcy, and Asuka probably only attended on a whim. No clue on Rei though, Gendo should have just kept her in NERV's basement.
Brayden Brooks
>There is also no reason to train Shinji from a young age.
Uh 90% of the plot is about Shinji being a shit because he has no training or conditioning.
>NERV and SEELE was lying to every one else about the angels. No one else knew that they were attracted to Lilith or Adam. Which is why other countries wanted a defense against them.
Which is stupid. You're telling me NERV can get everyone to make giant robots to fight giant monsters whose existence nobody has even confirmed, but can't convince them that those monsters will only start attacking in Japan?
>Thee is also no reason to restrict were Rei can live since she is loyal.
No but... why an abandoned building... why not like a real apartment like Misato has or even just across the hall from Gendo's quarters? Why was she, a valuable nerv asset and doppelwaifu nested up in an abandoned part of Tokyo-3?
Justin Baker
>Shinji not training makes sense under the idea that Rei was 01's designated pilot until her injury forced them to bring in Shinji. Which is another bothersome thing! She is replaceable, hence they could just off that body and get a new one if push comes to shove.
Blake Parker
But Rei wasn’t unit-01 designated pilot. She piloted 00 all the time. It was in 00 that she was injured. It wasn’t even until like episode 14 they even tested if Rei could pilot unit-01.
Owen Scott
The issue wasnt that no one knew where the angels would attack, the problem was making an Evangelion was a massive undertaking so constructing them was divided up amongst the richest countries that could afford it. The series starts and only 00 and 01 were complete and battle ready while the others are still being finished overseas.
Jacob Price
She piloted 00 because they now had Shinji. 00 was originally just meant as a prototype.
Also, Rei pilots 01 at the start of the manga against Sachiel, but is forced to retreat because her prior injuries are inhibiting her piloting.
Blake Rodriguez
The only time Shinji fails a mission is in episode 5 and 9 and in the latter one Asuka also failed despite having much longer training.
NERV didn’t want the world to know about Lilith. That is why they didn’t say anything.
Rei obviously doesn’t like being around other people much so it is likely that she choose that place herself. Or it was ice populated but everyone but Rei fled the city or died.
Zachary Sanders
>Rei was 01's designated pilot until her injury forced them to bring in Shinji. Wasn't Shinji on his way even before they detected Sachiel?
Brody Flores
Yes, because Rei was injured. They need some pilot around in case one shows up, and the timing just worked out.
Christian Jackson
Did you even watch the show?
Mason Wright
We see her pilot 00 in the flashback that took place before Shinji ever came to Tokyo3. Which is were she got her injuries. We see no similar test for 01. And as I said they hadn’t even tested if she could pilot 01 until episode 14.
And the manga and the anime are too separated to try and use one to justify the other.
Lincoln Long
>The only time Shinji fails a mission is in episode 5 and 9 and in the latter one Asuka also failed despite having much longer training. I meant like the mental conditioning for a life/death battle for the sake of humanity stuff. If he'd spent his whole life knowing that this was his purpose, maybe he would've stopped third impact. >NERV didn’t want the world to know about Lilith. That is why they didn’t say anything. They didn't need to say what the angels were after, just that they'd appear in Japan/the pacific.
Juan Bell
You're a fucking retard. You don't know shit about writing
Adrian Wood
Did you? Asuka feels nothing for Shinji besides that he's a nonthreatening male herbivore to practice on/ boost her self esteem after constant rejection by Chadji.
Thomas Bennett
She was testing 00, the expendable prototype, and if successful then they would have her test 01. 00's test wasn't successful, so Rei didn't get a chance to try 01.
Asher Lewis
I fucking hate Evangelion so fucking much. HURR EVERYONE IS SO LONELY. DURR, I WANT AFFECTION. BURR DI DURP DI HURRRRR, LETS END THE WORLD DERPITY DIM DUM DOOO
SOLUTIONS? WHY, LOL?! LETS JUST DESTROY EVERYTHING!!!
HURRRRRRRRRR DUUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Isaac Foster
The other aliens probably are really, really far away. The chances of two seeds landing on one planet was astronomical.
Luis Cox
>I watch anime for the writing!
NGE attracts the lowest dregs of the neckbeard caste doesn't it? Go post more theories on evageeks, nerd.
Eli Thompson
Do fuck off with trying to force that.
Matthew Hill
Gendo didn’t want Shinji to stop third impact, though. He wanted it to happen, so a Shinji with a warrior mentality might have been a bigger obstacle for him.
They would have to think of some reason as to why they would only attack there in that case.
Jack Perez
>maybe he would have stopped third impact SEELE and Gendo are both trying to cause third impact...
Bentley Nguyen
That doesn’t really make sense. They had already built 01 at that point the prototype should be obsolete. Testing the prototype when they already had a finished version doesn’t make sense.
Kayden Edwards
It's basically just a glorified Ultraman series, except it's shit. trash.
Evan Taylor
>They would have to think of some reason as to why they would only attack there in that case. "Angels form in the pacific ocean, because of the ring of fire" Done. Fine fine, maybe he would've gone along with Gendo if he let him in on the plan to bring mommy back from day one. Then Shinji wouldn't sperg out and kill everyone, instead carrying out whatever Gendo had planned.
Luis Hall
If there is an error with Rei syncing with an Evangelion, you don't want the better model to be the one getting broken.
Ayden Powell
>Rei is only compatible with Ubuntu Rookie mistake, Ritsuko...
Leo Rogers
But 00 and 01 would have different conditions for syncing so successfully syncing with 00 doesn’t mean she will do the same for 01.
Bentley Kelly
>being this small brained that you cant even understand NGE
Carter Bell
You should play the Shinji Ikari raising project, it was made for you.
Christopher Rodriguez
It would have been stupid if Gendo to share his secret plan he told no one with a child. A child he refused to raise even. There would be no guarantee from Gendo’s side that Shinji would agree.
Jack Scott
It's not a bad episode. It and Dance Like You Want to Win also show good chemistry between Shinji and Asuka, which deflates the narratives of some folks in here.
Isaac Jones
Where the fuck was Yui inside Unit-01? The jewel thing?
Andrew Rodriguez
>2018+1 >people still don’t get Eva
It is just psych examination of a fucked up teenager with big robos and superficial Christian themes
Nathan Adams
He he started from when he was 3 yrs old like he should've. Rei turned out fine, and she knew his plan.
Jeremiah Collins
I don’t know who’s narrative it is meant to deflate. The show sets up good chemistry between Asuka and Shinji so that it can tear down that chemistry later in the show.
Matthew Perez
>show good chemistry between Shinji and Asuka >top scientists devote days to engineering artificial chemistry to kill an angel >user self-inserts so hard he thinks its natural
jesus.
Nathan Bell
>fucked up teenager Shinji is one of the least fucked up teenagers ever, if we're being completely honest. I did way worse shit than jacking off on a comatose coworker when I was his age.
Asher Anderson
But Rei is a special case since she is firstly not actually 14 but younger and secondly because she knows she can be replaced at anytime. Shinji can’t be replaced and is integral to Gendo’s plan.
Josiah Roberts
Some people in these threads have this idea that they always disliked each other, which blatantly isn't the case.
You're a flatout retard. There's only so much the MIB and NERV can manipulate hence everything going to shit.
He didn’t do anything bad per se but he definitely isn’t well adjusted.
Connor Flores
>There's only so much the MIB and NERV can manipulate hence everything going to shit. You're proving my point.
Hudson Jones
>But Rei is a special case since she is firstly not actually 14 but younger and secondly because she knows she can be replaced at anytime. Shinji can’t be replaced and is integral to Gendo’s plan.
Don't you have that entirely backwards? In no way was shinji required for Gendo's plan. Gendo's plan was Rei+Him after fusing with the piece of Adam, lilith was probably involved too, but idk. Whatever was gonna happen after he stuck his embryo hand in Rei's uterus is a mystery.
Kevin Walker
Eva is just Jap society with mechas. >emotionally distant father >expects to follow in family trade >kid doesn’t want to but does because he thinks it will make dad love him >doesn’t know how to handle social situations >adults that deal with problems via alcohol or promiscuity >nobody ever tells eachother how they feel to save face >work becomes their lives thinking it will solve their fucked up social lives
Jayden Gutierrez
He also needed unit-01 and Yui.
Brayden Wright
>this idea that they always disliked each other, which blatantly isn't the case.
They become friends until Shinji is a little shit an rub it in her face that her beloved kaji is ded as a dog and she seipukus.
Joseph Lewis
>Whatever was gonna happen after he stuck his embryo hand in Rei's uterus is a mystery. Why the fuck do people like this piece of shit hack excuse for mecha anime? What? Is the whole series just some Jap faggot making shit up as he goes along? Is this the weeaboo calvinball?
Jack Jackson
I enjoy arguing on the internet.
Bentley Sanders
>>kid doesn’t want to but does because he thinks it will make dad love him But thats not why he does it at all. He does it so his dad wont fucktorture his crush.
Jonathan Bailey
All fictional stories are made up.
Dominic Wilson
Its an ultraman ripoff
Brayden Perry
It would've been nice to see Hikari tanged by Touji in EoE.
Austin Smith
that is only the first episode...
Jayden Green
Then doesn't he do it for Kensuke and Touji's sake.
Blake Jenkins
That is another episode...point is, Shinji does a lot of it to be accepted, by his fsther, by Misako, by his friends, Asuka, and Rei. He does it for himself, to coddle his ego that he is worth their affection, that is why he is a drama queen about it. He requires constant reinforcement from others for his ego.
Bentley Thomas
evangelion wishes it was as good as ultraman
William Rodriguez
which is odd considering how emo and aloof he is in scene 1 episode 1
Brayden Price
Up until that point Shinji had lead an uninteresting existence with no friends or real personal interactions. Piloting suddenly leads him to have that for once, leading to that change.
