It's not the alternative France-Prussian war. The empire is already a united nation and conditions are completly different. It's a war that started as a small regional conflict and is escalating to a world war because the empire keeps winning its defensive wars and everyone else shits their pants over it. It's really closer to WW1 than the Franco-Prussian war.
Tech levels are already WW1 level and the start and by the end of the anime we have WW2 era tanks and V1s.

The novels do action poorly in my opinion, but they explain stuff well. The OST and voice acting for the anime are great, even if the animation itself isn't very good. The action scenes that don't have CG are nice too.

Even if the animation uses CGI puppets more than I'd like or even remembered (looking back on it there were way more than I thought) the artstyle is fantastic. I don't mean the character designs(which while controversial, I still enjoy very much), I mean the atmosphere both out of the trenches and in them, both literally and figuratively. I love how they portrayed the environments the story takes place, as do I the weapons; it's sort of astounding how they actually bothered to do some homework on the matter. The sound design is also spectacular, whether you are listening to Tanya casting a spell or the explosions, it all pulls you right in. The pacing is also pretty great, I'd say, and I was much more invested in the squabble between Tanya and Being X in the anime than I was in the LN, simply because of the fact that he shows up more often and is a lot more intimidating. And as you've said, the OST and voice acting are top notch.

Mary's attacks in the movie are an audio treat.

There's more, but basically bringing the encounter from book 4 (plus adding a some more animeonly, like with her father) into the movie and changing their training/stationing from the Commonwealth to the Federation.
It is different from our history with the mages basically being what would have been Eagle Squadron in the original book timeline, but serves the movie well enough and realistically won't effect the story in the long run if there is another season.

Man, I kind of wish the 203rd had a bit more of development so that I could care a tad more about them. At least there's Weiss, Visha and Grantz, whom I really like even though they don't get much focus. I do know that this is Tanya's story, so I understand, but I wish I could feel slightly more nervous whenever she charges into battle; as it is I'm only worried over her losing "numbers" and thus fighting power, rather than over emotional attachment.

Each of the squad commanders gets a little focus in the big fight.

Story basically starts at the end of Africa and ends with the order for the creation of the kampfgruppe.
So they kind of skip over the second trial and the Battle of not Britian.
An Afrika OVA or something with the testing / search and rescue in the West would be nice to have later.

It is also pretty fitting to their respective cultures, which is a fantastic touch. I specially enjoy how the German model seems to go to efficiency rather than anything else; on the one hand, it fits, but on the other it's kind of weird they don't play up their nationalism in their designs. Makes sense; after all, the French wouldn't have had so many dead in the first weeks of WWI if they had dropped the red pants for something more practical.

It's his diary from the years he spent fighting in WWI; a really engaging book. I got into WWI after watching Youjo Senki and as a result decided to investigate more on the subject, and that was one of the first books on the subject I got into.

WW1 is ignored by popular culture which is a shame because it really did change Western society forever.
Prior to WW1 we still believed in the romantic version of war, warriors fighting for a cause. WW1 wasn't a war in a traditional sense, it was industrialised murder. A factory designed to turn men in mincemeat. You couldn't fight back against machine guns, snipers, artillery or gas. Before WW1 Europeans believed that you had to be buried whole or you wouldn't go to heaven whole, things like cremation were illegal. After WW1 they had to change that because they couldn't identify bodies anymore, they were just bits of meat and bone. It traumatised an entire society.

WWI was when they first had to rethink how wars are fought. The old style of line formation and firing still happened but in a ditch. Sooner or later someone had to charge the other but no one knew how to go further than that. It became purely a numbers and resources fight.
WWII was more advanced using tactics and tools developed to not repeat WWI horrible fighting style. The mobility alone made it a completely different war. This allowed better stretching of materials over time and keep losses down.

It was the end of the ideal of war. Men always enjoyed war when it was a tribal battle, an epic like the fights in front of the walls of Troy. Pre-WW1 society made a big deal about promoting martial virtue and heroism. Modern war doesn't allow any of that and modern society is desperately trying to program males to avoid war because modern society cannot function with any sort of widespread violence.
