Darkness was better. It introduced Mea, Nemesis, had a lot of focus on Mikan, Risa, Yui, and other better girls, had better art, improved characters like Sairenji who were shit in the original. The only character who really got the short end of the stick was Lala.

You're right that Darkness' action story concerns Yami's dealing with her inner demons, Mea's transforming from weapon to person, and Nemesis' learning that some people, at least, are people, not toys.
Lala had less screen time, but she's still at the center of the relationship story: she's pushing Haruna to win alongside her; she's the reason that Momo has to kick off the harem plan if Momo wants a shot at a relationship with Rito; and she's the main reason that Rito doesn't reject the harem plan out of hand. She wasn't on every other page, but her presence was felt nearly every chapter.

They improved her by leaning in on her sluttiness and barely ever focusing on her so that she doesn't overstay her welcome.
