I think Eren has anti-social personality disorder, or at least borderline. His impulsiveness and recklessness is very typical sociopath behaviour; they don't care about the safety of other people nor their own. Even as a child, he murdered 2 grown men in cold blood and didn't express any remorse. Eren is a sociopath pretending to be a good person, he has always been an evil shithead who cares nothing about human lives. His transformation into world enemy number 1 makes perfect sense in context.

His superficial display of emotions is disturbing. Have you noticed that Eren rarely smiles? His neutral mode is pissed off. He fakes being nice, so others don't see him as a threat. The scene where he dooms his entire squad after rushing after the titan that killed Thomas, it wasn't about revenge. He simply couldn't resist the urge to kill, so he got killed. Saving Armin was also for personal reasons, like feeding his own ego. He glorifies himself as a hero at the expense of other people. All this subtlety easily flies over the head of most viewers.
