The fact that people who call themselves Evangelion fans are always complaining about the final two episodes of the TV series is something that I find truly maddening. Yeah I didn't know what to think either, when I was like 15 or something and I hadn't been prepared for something more than an action show. But having rewatched the series and movies plenty of times I can safely say that the final two episodes of the TV series are the pinnacle of the show and possibly anime as a medium. Even End of Evangelion pales in comparison. The one flaw and one flaw only is the minor ambiguity as to how instrumentality looks outside, what it consists of as a spectacle. and that's really what End of Eva is, just a 90 minute long spectacle displaying how the world outside was affected.
The fact that people who call themselves Evangelion fans are always complaining about the final two episodes of the TV...
Only good episode of Eva is episode 9
I never bothered watching 25 or 26.
I just skipped to EoE.
Are you one of those people who thinks that if something is "good" and that if someone "understood it" then it can not be "disliked"? Because you certainly sound like one of those retards.
I agree with this.
Of course it would have been infuriating had the anime actually ended like that, but they made EoE, so where's the problem?
They had 22 years to get over it.
>he claims to like EoTV
>while claiming it's concurrent with EoE
get out
Well I mean most Eva "fans" shit on it for all the wrong reasons. Besides if you thought the show was just gonna be mecha battles by episode 15 you might be retarded. Episodes 25 and 26 are pretty much a perfect ending for the characters and perfect culmination of the themes and ideas explored regarding their individual mental problems, and internal barriers to overcome. I also think they showed and explained the way the AT field worked a lot better.
I kind of disagree to be honest. For sure it would have been really confusing if the show ended like that, I can understand that much, but infuriating? It's just different, once you understand why they did it it's not that hard to piece together everything else even without EoE. They ran out of budget for flashy scenes so they had to skip everything else and just go straight to the most important part: instrumentality. I genuinely believe EoE doesn't add too much of great importance to the show as a whole outside the scenes inside instrumentality which deal with some different concepts from the episode 25-26 ones. Other than that, you don't really "need" EoE in order to get the full story or even the correct conclusion. It doesn't matter that you don't see what Seele does, nor does it matter that the actual, physical aspect of Third Impact is not seen. Now that said I do really love EoE and I do think it's a perfect ending to the series, and what it did add was very important even if it was mostly one long single sequence. Asuka discovering her mother in the Evangelion and Shinji choosing to live, having his face caressed by Asuka, were pretty great. But I don't think the series would have been unfinished WITHOUT EoE. Just, well, very very confusing to people who weren't expecting the interpersonal themes to be the most important part of the show although with episodes 15 and 24 existing, I wonder how they did accomplish such ignorance.
tl,dr: episodes 25 and 26 were 2deep4u
I like both endings for different reasons.
I don't think it's exactly concurrent, more like two inconsistent but complimentary versions of the same basic conclusion. Basic theme is the same though, humanity is joined by instrumentality and is forced to face each other; Shinji learns to love himself. Did Rei become a giant angel in both third impacts? Did Asuka fight and get killed by nine Evas? Did people turn into tang? Maybe, I don't know. I don't think it matters honestly. They're just fight scenes. They don't matter. Maybe Shinji doesn't love himself in EoE though, I think it's weird that it ends with a kind of negative moment. Not sure.
>The fact that people who call themselves Evangelion fans are always complaining
Really, this is all you had to post.
Shinji didn't love himself in the TV ending either.
He only starts to realise that maybe he can love himself.
Well there are things to complain about (Rebuild had some bad stuff)
Rebuild
Well I mean no one just instantly loves themselves, yeah. I guess he stopped hating himself.
*learn too love himself
Agree.
Though I cannot really defend them when people call them too 'explainy'.
If to think objective, probably a hype in weeb community that Eva leads to depression is the reason some people do not like these two episodes and prefer EoE, coz it makes this work much better.
Tbh I don't like last episodes. Yeah, me a philosophical monolog on a street. Maybe I should re-watch em one more time or it's my taste.
Would it make sense if 25/26 was actually Gendo's instrumentality instead of SEELEs?
Maybe people who like to complain find themselves in Evangelion.
Based.
>pinnacle of the show and possibly anime as a medium
>pinnacle of anime - a form of animation is an episode with unfinished and poor animation
wew lad
I dont' even think Gendo cared about it instrumentality. He just wanted to God seat to bring back Yui
25-26 are good, it's the whole series that's sort of shit
>muh animation is the only thing that matters in anime
If you cared about animation you wouldn't be watching anime at all. Much less TV anime.
I don't i'm a mangafag.
You know what this is called, user? Rationalization. You like the show so you retcon its flaws away after the 50th viewing.
The manga was the best iteration but people still stick to the anime because the manga spells things out in a way that provides some semblance of rationality.
I thought the entire show wasn't great but the last 2 episodes were the icing on the shit cake. Felt like boring Kojima-level philosophical masturbation. If you're into that kind of thing that's fine, I guess it just isn't for me though. The anime was worth a try.
The reason I say infuriating is because it's such a drastic change from the overall pace and design of the show; the last two episodes are completely different from the rest and arguably anticlimactic.
Of course they still add something important to the show, but it's understandable people were disappointed until EoE gave them an epic conclusiom more in line with the earlier episodes.
It's no secret Ep 25 and 26 only happened as they did because their budget ran out.
Honestly I stopped caring about pretention in my immature forms of entertainment like anime and vidya once I was well into my 20s. I'd rather had something that gets me to think and philosophize a little even if its all entry level rather than just popcorn-tier media that is just a waste of my limited adult time.
I don't like the opposite end of the spectrum either, "just turn your brain off" capeshit, but I thought NGE was just boring.
Then you should understand since this is the pinnacle manga pages.
People stick to the anime because the manga ruins the characterization of most of the characters as well as having a shit ending.
>Shit ending
>makes sense
>isn't retarded
>isn't open-ended
>doesn't leave more questions than answers
This is what I'm talking about with animefags. Characterization was better where it counted because they actually had the time to delve into the characters and present them like they'd been originally intended like Gendo, Yui, Kaworu, Kaji, Ritsuko.
>makes sense
>isn't retarded
>isn't open-ended
>doesn't leave more questions than answers
First part is just a worse EoE. Then it is just a shitty reset ending were none of the characters learned anything and no one have any memories of what happend so it might as well not have.
>they actually had the time to delve into the characters and present them like they'd been originally intended like Gendo, Yui, Kaworu, Kaji, Ritsuko.
What makes you think that any of these were ever intended to be more delved into? And none of the addition is really worthwhile. The only one that actually help the character is Kaji's backstory.
Do you honestly think that giving Gendo the shitty motivation that was him being jealous of Shinji for taking Yui's attention made him a better character?
>The fact that people who call themselves Evangelion fans
>people who call themselves Evangelion fans
>people
No.
If the creators agreed with you, why would they have made EoE? It's not like it's a secret that the last two episodes were rushed and underfunded.
Also you're a retard for pretending those episodes have actual depth and aren't riding entirely on avant garde bullshit.
Anno and other people who made Eva have defended the ending.
At most they said that episode 25 was lackluster but 26 was good as is.
Fine. I still disagree with them, and you. A whiney teenage boy deciding that he wants to try to continue to exist as an individual is just not very compelling.
>Do you honestly think that giving Gendo the shitty motivation that was him being jealous of Shinji for taking Yui's attention made him a better character?
Yes, immensely. Before he's just a boomer for gen-xers to superimpose their dad onto.
>Then it is just a shitty reset ending were none of the characters learned anything and no one have any memories of what happend so it might as well not have.
You didn't understand it apparently, they learned their lessons and those lessons were imprinted on their soul for the next cycle of earth's rebirth. The whole point is the experiences don't mean as much as the lessons they took from them. Not to mention that the logistics of Shinji/Asuka/randos popping outta the ocean rebuilding the earth with no plants or animals makes very little sense and the ending becomes exclusively 2deep4you posturing.
>What makes you think that any of these were ever intended to be more delved into
Because budget constraints lopped off a whole lot of stuff and the characters have more work put into their designs/layouts than they have importance to the series as it stood.
Like Maya getting LCL'd by Ritsuko, and the other two getting LCL'd by Misato and Rei, they clearly would've ideally had more subtext to those relationships in the original anime.
This
The final two episodes were good.
EoE was better.
Simple as that.
>t. Hideaki Anno
Evangelion would be vastly improved with any single character replacing Shinji.
>Gendo accepting he can't bring back his wife
>Asuka accepting she is not gifted by nature, but has achieved all she has through her own hard work and determination
>Rei realizing its okay to live for herself
>Kaworu realizing he loves humans and doesn't need to follow his angel programming
Fcuk even Kensuke has a more interesting personality for a protagonist
>Yes, immensely. Before he's just a boomer for gen-xers to superimpose their dad onto.
It is stupid, cliche and boring. Just because some can relate doesn't make it good.
>You didn't understand it apparently, they learned their lessons and those lessons were imprinted on their soul for the next cycle of earth's rebirth
What do you mean imprinted on their souls where is that even hinted at?
They are different characters that have lived entirely different lives as a result of it not being post-apocalyptic.
>Not to mention that the logistics of Shinji/Asuka/randos popping outta the ocean rebuilding the earth with no plants or animals makes very little sense and the ending becomes exclusively 2deep4you posturing.
Not a long time has passed since third impact, things will obviously change with time. But at least there are consequences to the actions taken in the show.
>Like Maya getting LCL'd by Ritsuko, and the other two getting LCL'd by Misato and Rei,
They are side character that don't matter. That is why they don't have more to them. To give them more focus would detract from the rest of the show, unless you made it longer.
I agree with you there
>What do you mean imprinted on their souls where is that even hinted at?
Umm its obvious, Shinji is noticeably living his life at the end with the same mentality he achieved in the LCL. Its the same conclusion EoE reaches with the hedgehog thing, but the manga actually depicts it without unnecessary beach strangling and ends on a positive note,(making it so Shinji's retarded journey to find himself didn't destroy everybody's life) .
But it did destroy everyone in the anime, just off screen. The third impact happened.
>Kensuke has a more interesting personality for a protagonist
>military larper voyeur av nerd survivalist
Best boy. All the angels would've jobbed.
How does this show that Shinji changed his mindset towards that of EoE?
I said that.
Anime: everyone's life is destroyed, and maybe they can come outta the ocean and fuck Asuka, beat shinji over the head with a rock
Manga: Everyone's life is destroyed, the Earth restarts, they come back in a non-apocalyptic world.
>but even so my possibilities are infinite
way to post just a first clause in a story's moral. Shinji learns that even tho life is totes gay, he wants to live it just in case it stops being toes gay.
Yes. In fact if you ignore EoE this is blatantly what happens.
How come Shinji wasn't already living at NERV? They knew the angels were coming and that they only had 1 pilot/EVA combo on hand. If the first angel had just Zerg rushed them the whole thing would've been over.
But I'm not an Evangelion fan.
I just love my wife, Rei.
They didnt know exactly when they'd come, Rei was meant to be the sole pilot of 01 but her accident when testing 00 came at a very inconvinient time. 00 was just a test unit that wasnt meant to be put in combat.
My friend told me to skip them and just watch EoE
Gendo seemed to know. Shinji was on his way by the time they detected it
>working at the nerv control room
>salary+ benefits for just sitting there with you dick in your hand
Must ve been a lush gig
Forgot pic
Not entirely. Misato appears to live pay check to pay check eating cheap crappy food, and she has one of the most important positions in NERV.
Either she is a terrible wage negotiator or the budget doesnt spare much for employee compensation.
I figured she was a stress eater given high-end clothing/car
>School SOL world
>Rei exists despite being Lilith
>Rei exists and Shinji doesn't immediately say "wow you look like my mom"
This was never a possibility instrumentality lied.
>two people can't look similar
>just because she's Lilith in one reality means she has to be so in the other reality
Asuka is also Shinji's childhood friend and his neighbor and goes to the same class, instead of being in America or Europe and going to university.
You generally wouldnt recognize a 14 year old version of your mom.
And I think the blue hair and red eyes would mask that, and also be questioned first.
Actually, forget SOL world, everyone in the normal world should have questioned it too.
Souls are souls bro. Why would lilith be a highschool girl?
If its a Rei lookalike then that's just cheating.
She eats crappy food because she can't cook.
iirc Angelic Days was based on the SOL world and they ended up still fighting angels and shit.
>tfw no SOL ep where Shinji brings his crush Rei to the house and she gets wet for his dad
I'm saying Rei looking like Yui doesn't mean much because people irl can look similar.
That one is plausible.
In a world where Kyoko doesn't become mentally ill and die, she would likely divorse her husband since he is still a dick, and from there feel like moving away from Germany to Japan with her daughter.
Asuka grows up with a mom who loves her and is content liviing a normal kids life instead of accelerating her education to prove herself.
the only remaining question is whether or not she'd still want kaji's dick
In 1998 I thought this was the best thing since sliced bread. Now I only care for the porn.
t. HK user
Bugs me that neither of the main SOL verse spinoffs where NERV still exists give Rei some sort of origin or family (SIRP Rei is called a distant relative by Yui, and that is it).
Rei never discusses parents or a lack thereof.
So for all we know, she is likely still a secret Yui clone experiment, only after Shinji's dick now.
It would be really easy to assign him a guardian right there and have him trained all his life to pilot, or use him in experiments to explore the connection he's known to have with EVA-01 and which was their whole model for how they prepared Children candidates. Or even not keep him in the dark like Rei, because you could tell a grieving four year old how you're bringing mommy back and he'd be just as into it as you. Gendo sends Shinji away instead and only brings him back in as a last resort because he doesn't actually hate the boy or see him as meat, the best parenting he trusted himself to do was limiting exposure to his own evil ass.
"based on" is the key word here. It can't be THE slice-of-life world since the point of that is that there are no Evas in it.
Actually, episode 25 and 26 are my favorite part of the show and I sometimes just watch them on their own because they're so good.
She is very much still a clone in Angelic Days. I think Yui's lying in Raising Ikari, too, because that distant family Rei's supposed to come from is never described at all, she's got no life skills, doesn't seem to have ever lived anywhere but the lab, and Shinji sometimes has flashbacks about knowing her as very young children. But there's never any follow-up.
>A whiney teenage boy deciding that he wants to try to continue to exist as an individual is just not very compelling.
A macho shounen about some cliche action heros beating up bad guys isn't very compelling. Anno was right, fuck otaku. They don't understand how storytelling can be used beyond childrens cartoons.
>It's no secret Ep 25 and 26 only happened as they did because their budget ran out.
Instrumentality/Shinjis mental problems were the most important part of the show. The fights really don't matter, the setting could have been a mental hospital or a college or whatever as far as the setting matters, and the only reason it matters at all is because conflict is a good way to bring out peoples problems and mecha lends itself well to anime as a medium.
i actually really liked the final two episode and i actually like the rough style it's done in. the last two episodes do a good job driving home the themes of the series and is a universe being in which shinji accepts instrumentality and that's why everyone congratulates him because they are all just congratulating them self and are all just one being who is happy because there is no others.
>I can safely say that the final two episodes of the TV series are the pinnacle of the show and possibly anime as a medium
OP is based and redpilled
The show was never about Nerv, Evas or any of the surrounding plot. It was about the characters and their mental issues, mainly Shinji, hence the original TV ending was prefect.
>which shinji accepts instrumentality
He didn't, he finally accepts himself as individual being on his own value, that's why everyone clapped for him.
>how you're bringing mommy back and he'd be just as into it as you.
I mean, its not a lie. I think it would've been easy enough to raise Shinji to be as sociopathic as himself and Yui quite naturally.
Don't really remember Angelic Days but maybe there were actual mechas and not Evas
But the entire affair ending as it does in EOE pays a different kind of respect to the emotions of the characters and their mental issues. It's resolution that involves that completely, it's just a different one.
Whether you consider it a dumpster fire is another matter entirely.
I am so, so, so fucking glad Anno made sure people like you weren't in charge of anything. God, we're so lucky no dumbass studio director stepped in trying to fuck it up.
The added stuff kinda makes that SOL sequence pointless and only proves he'd be a little less faggy if he had parents.
>"people" discussing manga shit ITT
Lol
Shinji is one of those protagonists everybody hates at first, then when they turn 15 they write novels on evageeks about how unbelievably deep he is, then when they're 20 they hate him again.
Shinji is a depressed teenager with father issues. He's not "deep", he's just a genuinely good character. Only tryhards hate Shinji and people who hate their own teenage self.
>unironically thinking the anime is better
If the manga came first everybody would call the anime a botch job and a steaming pile of trash, we both know it. Like the first FMA
>Yeah I didn't know what to think either, when I was like 15 or something
There you go, that's the answer
they're 15
>not hating your teenage self
That means you haven't grown
>Shinji is a depressed teenager with father issues.
Its honestly such a terrible character because its representative of the vast majority of teenage anime-watchers in Nippon. Petty self-insertion .
The manga is just trash. Pure garbage. Even the Rebuilds are better.
when I was 15 I thought it was deep, I was disappointed when I was 11. What the fuck is wrong with you guys' arrested development ?
No shit, Shinji is a self insert for Annos teenage self and Gendo is a self-insert for his older self. What's wrong with that?
>hating yourself
I couldn't help being who I was back then. Why should I blame myself, I was just a kid?
>Even the Rebuilds are better.
I dont like the manga either, but lets not get crazy user.
Asuka is a more compelling protagonist because you actually want her to succeed. With Shinji all you want is him removed from the plot entirely, even if you're a fanboy.
I like Asuka but winning the fights isn't really the point. Who gives a shit, without Shinji it's just a bland mecha show.
>What's wrong with that?
Self-insertion is a cheap way to get someone invested in an incomplete narrative..
>The manga is just trash. Pure garbage.
The manga does a far better job at conveying the anime's original intent than the anime itself.
At least they add something, albeit shitty. The manga just takes a good idea, and takes a fat steaming dump on it.
Asuka had way more compelling psychological issues than shinji, and her femaleness dialed it up to 11.
He is not just anyone's self-insert he is Anno's self-insert.
>fills in gaping holes in an incomplete story
>2deepfags violently opposed
The state of EVA fans.
I once watched Young Guns 1 and 2 back to back every night for a week and by the end I was convinced they were the greatest work of not just film, but 20th century fiction, so I know what kind of brain problem you have.
he accepted himself as an individual but instrumentality still happened by him accepting himself as an individual this new individual that is also everyone else he was able to find happiness in congratulating himself. end of evangelion is the ending in which instrumentality doesn't happen and shinji completely rejects it he even chokes asuka as to see if he truly is an individual as only pain can be conflicted if an other also exists
The manga fills absolutely nothing and the story isn't incomplete.
EoE is like self-determined instrumentality. Its conceivable that everyone stays within the singularity besides Asuka and Shinji.
You're right, she did, and I actually sympathized with her more than any of the other characters, but as a main character Shinji is necessary. You could have a show with Asuka as the main character but you'd have to completely re-write to the point it would be a totally different setting altogether.
What intent is the manga better at conveying?
Manga confirms angels are space aliens, Gendo/Yui's goals, Kaji's motivations, Fuyutsuki's motivations, Kaworu's motivations/existence
How do you know humans don't have stockholm syndrome regarding being alive? Maybe we should all be dead instead.
>Manga confirms angels are space aliens
That's retarded, the angels are beings of earth from earth, that seele co-opted into using as a catalyst for instrumentality.
true since asuka and shinji are separate from everyone else it's not true instrumentality and it can only be assumed they would go on to reproduce undoing all the work of the instrumentality project, that is what makes it a complete rejection.
>You could have a show with Asuka as the main character but you'd have to completely re-write to the point it would be a totally different setting altogether.
Would you? Everything would be the same except the first few eps/ep 24 and then everything else could just have Asuka's internal monologues replacing Shinji's.
>Gendo/Yui's goals, Fuyutsuki's motivations, Kaworu's motivations/existence
Already in the anime. The manga just create new motivations.
>Kaji's motivations
All they add is his backstory, otherwise his overall motivation is still in the anime.
I don't think it's that universal. Shinji's arc requires something huge for him to be called on to do, that sounds impossible and he would never do ordinarily, that nobody can really teach him about, makes him feel he has value for the first time, and takes him into a new environment with a bunch of people he likes while staying sorta melancholy. It would take a lot of contriving to tell a similar story about sport fishing.
I wanted a mecha show with lots of fighting scenes and hot girls, instead got something that tried to be pseudo psychological and dead girls. Eva a shit, if I wanted that bullshit but did right I would just rewatch Lain.
Nice fanfic. They're aliens
>it can only be assumed they would go on to reproduce undoing all the work of the instrumentality project,
Or some random low IQ chad rejects instrumentality because there already was no suffering in his life and then bangs Asuka while Shinji is foraging for grubs.
>people admonish the manga but believe in the Adam/Eve ending tier fanfic that the manga's author drew
>Rei will never ride yout Bologna Pony
Unless you watched Eva shortly after it came out or while it was airing there's no way you should have been expecting a straightforward mecha series. Have you watched any other mecha series?
thats why they made the rebuilds, visual novels, spinoffs etc.
That's why the setting is necessary. Well, actually, it's just a metaphor for a boy being brought into the working world by his seemingly uncaring father. To a young man who fears society like Shinji did, that would be just as huge to him as saving humanity if not more. Mecha is, again, just more accessible and makes it possible to do things with human interaction that you can't do in a real-life setting.
I thought you meant removing/replacing Shinji. Yeah sure, an NGE Asuka POV would work just fine.
Only retards would believe in a Adam/Eva end. The manga is still retarded no matter what, though.
>Nice fanfic. They're aliens
Not canon lol. It's pretty much explicitly explained in the series, the angels are just humans. Lilith is in the fucking earth for fucks sake. You goddamn nigger. You absolute retard.
I watched when it came out.
>I wanted a mecha show with lots of fighting scenes and hot girls
Well yeah we know the average anime fan (You) is barely above or even slightly below legal retardation. It's assumed "people" like you aren't going to try talking about the show let alone like it.
You are retarded. The Adam and Lilith came from space. Lilith is in the earth because she came to earth millions of years ago and crashed into earth, which also created the moon.
The angels aren't "just humans" humans are also angels but are still different from the other angels.
>2019
>Still pretending EVA was ever DEEP and not mostly about things that look cool
Someone's mad. I bet you watch DEEP slice of life and general moeshit too.
>say the show isn't for complete retards
>that must mean they think the show is incredibly DEEP
It's not deep, it's a character drama/psycho-analysis that looks cool. I have never claimed Eva was deep, and never will. It's just plain good.
This is a silly arguement.
Lilith and Adam are alien beings that crashes on Earth, but no life existed on the planet before they got there, so their spawn are effectively native inhabitants. Lilith created all life as we know it, Adam created Angels 3-17.
The angels are just as alien or indigenous as humans are.
Bokurano was deeper and a better mecha story. I liked NGE's character/mechanical design better tho.
Yeah I watch Girls and Panzer and Non-non biyori. Fuck you gonna do about it, shounen cuck?
The angels are literally from space, coming to collect lilith and adam. If that isn't an alien, I don't know what is.
So do I, retard.
What is that meant to prove?
Age doesn't matter for it to make sense. It's a mindless action mech show that tried to be more than what it was by incorporating the delusional heroin fueled ramblings of a pretentious moron that though putting biblical symbolism and psychological conflict in to a story with no particular goal or outcome made it deep.
They are not coming to collect Lilith and Adam. Where did you get that from? And the angels we see in the show are spawns of Adam.
The angels are Adam's children.
One was born inside a volcano on Earth
What? No, what the fuck. They straight up say in the show that the angels are at the very leas born on earth.
It's a mecha show, he's not wrong if he watched blind.
I don't think that makes a difference for the point the scene was making.
The biblical symbolism means next to nothing. It's just a side plot about how the human instrumentality project will be completed. I can't believe 24 years later people still think Anno was most interested in the biblical stuff.
>Thank you to my father, to my mother goodbye
Seriously, he spells it out in bold fucking text at the end of the episode in case anyone didn't get it. Can you not read?
No it isn't, Instrumentality ends when Rei falls apart and the Black Moon explodes and the MPEvas solidify.
>Evangelion gets Yea Forumsnons to not believe in evolution
sad
Artificial evolution is still evolution. Dunno why people care about evolution either way unless they're creationists.
instrumentality is the state of all souls existing together with no conflict or happiness or anything. Shinji decides to let everybody have a choice, but doesn't force anybody to reemerge, hence self-deterministic.
Well there certainly weren't any desovian legs hanging off lilith
He is wrong for thinking the show is shit simply because it wasn't what he expected.
And there had been mecha before NGE that wasn't simply fight scenes and hot girls. To try and view the entire genre as that is reductive.
A core part of Instrumentality is all the souls being in Rei & the Black Moon, and both those things clearly get destroyed (with souls flying out, no less) when Shinji rejects Instrumentality.
alright but can we at least agree rebuild 2.0 was fucking retarded
Mecha is a really deep genre as a whole, surprisingly.
>user complains about getting bait and switched with a theme he didn't expect or want in a mecha show
>Call him a retard because he rightfully expected a typical mecha show instead of a pretentious and ill executed psychological drama when user didn't even complain about not understanding the plot
>Get mad when people call you out on your shit
You people never change, and yes, EVA's for retards like (You) who are very convinced to be better than others, but not because it has some sort of above average themes or execution, it's because you people still believe it somehow does.
i mean we don't have a word for partial instrumentality, but I think its safe to assume the LCL ocean isn't the natural state of things. But like I said, if everyone chose to stay in the ocean, the same results as instrumentality would be achieved.
2.0 is just stupid.
3.0 goes full retard
It was straightforward mecha. Pre-human civilizations, mysteriously related enemies, conspiracies to direct evolution, Armageddon, and sperg protagonists from broken homes were already standards before the nineties.
EVA is a really good example of a runaway fanbase and being in the right time and place
Could've just as well been Elfen Lied.
>>user complains about getting bait and switched with a theme he didn't expect or want in a mecha show
>user wants another mindless generic mecha that been done hundreds of times
>gets called out for his shitty low standards
There is no actual bait and switch in Eva. The tone is set from episode 1.
It is retarded to get mad when a show isn't just like every other mecha you've seen, it is kind of like getting mad at School Days for not being just another generic harem show. And as said here it is not like NGE was the first of its kind.
I agree mostly but it apparently wasn't straightforward enough for that user. I just feel like you'd have to have heard about what Eva is like unless you live under a rock. I can't imagine it's possible to go into it completely blind, or even if you know nothing about the story itself you would probably have at least heard about its reputation.
Its really easy when you arent a hikkiNEET that spends 24/7 on anime forums
name 1 (one) well executed psychological drama anime
Haibane Renmei
>the same results as instrumentality would be achieved.
I strongly doubt that, considering all the "return-to-the-womb" themes.
I don't understnad how you can doubt it. Instrumentality was humanity being forced into a singularity, and Shinji let everybody decide. If they remain, they remain. If they don't, they don't.
Fruits basket
Thats how I feel.
If theyre still goop, then no AT Fields, and without AT Fields they are not separate.
Perhaps they are not being forced together in a paticular way like during the Black Moon event, but their souls are still intermingling.
The result is that while they could re establish their AT Field if they can imagine themselves on their own heart, that is something easier said than done in that situation.
>shinji and Asuka could only reemerge because of experience with the entry plugs, sync rates
>Shinji came out first because he'd already done it before when he was trapped in Unit-01
>Took a similar amount of time for Asuka to emerge that it took Shinji the first time
Thats the most realistic case
Shinji came out first because it was he that decided to reject instrumentality. No one could do it before him.
>First guy who emerges from the ocean is a neckbeard that got tanged in the middle of shitposting
Yeah, pretty much this.
>There is no actual bait and switch in Eva.
The entire premise of the show is being a giant bait and switch you moron, when people think about shows with a bunch of kids piloting cool giant "robots" to save the world they don't think they'll get a deconstruction about depression or how social anxiety and pressure turns people into monsters.
user probably expected something like Giant Gorg or Exkaiser and instead got Anno's own psychological journal, it's pretty understandable he got bummed, but no, you gotta be an asocial, self absorbed asshole like the characters of the show you love so much and insult him for a completely reasonable and extremely common personal problem.
No wonder you like the show so much, you're as much of a social and psychological failure as Asuka or Shinji.
How long before international space station/mars mission chads swoop in on Asuka?
you need to be pretty dumb not to understand right from the first episode that it won't be a regular mecha. not to mention living under a rock.
Actually thats a thought, would astronauts be out of range of the anti-AT field?
They would have had quite a show if they survived long enough.
The first episode of Eva is about the awful relationship Shinji has with his father and that Shinji does not want to pilot the Eva because he has zero training, but Gendo forces him by threatening of using a damaged girl instead of him.
Episode 2 starts with Shinji getting destroyed by the Angel and then wakes up all alone in a unknown hospital, were he meets his father that completely ignores him. Shinji was also going to live all alone until Misato forced him to live with him.
Episode 3 starts with Shinji looking dead inside shooting Angel holograms. He then gets bullied at school just for piloting the Eva, then he has a manic episode when he fights the angel.
Episode 4 is all about Shinji running away because he is depressed.
The tone is obvious from the start. And if you don't notice that you are either blind or retarded.
It seems pretty limited to the surface. NERV probably had a moon base in the original too. Seens like a good hedge for Gendo to have against SEELE, though the UN might've nuked em/
That's how most mech shows with shinji-types work
INSTRUMENTALITY IS REPRESENTED BY THE CROSSES COMING DOWN, THE SOULS ENTERING REI AND THE BLACK MOON, AND THE MPEVAS BEING IN THE SKY
WHEN SHINJI REJECTS INSTRUMENTALITY ALL OF THIS GETS REVERTED
HOW DENSE ARE YOU TO NOT SEE THIS AS INSTRUMENTALIITY ENDING
>NERV probably had a moon base in the original too
Probably not, otherwise getting the Lance back would be easier.
I never called Eva unique. I just said that the tone was obvious from the start.
I was going to post this but I don't think it really would. The reason they give in the show is that they have no way of bringing something as massive as the lance back to Earth. Whether they sent a ship from the Earth or from the moon, I don't think it would matter. Though if they had a moon base I guess they could maybe try and push it from behind to get it into Earth's orbit, but then you'd have some massive magical lance falling from orbit which I don't think would be a good thing.
Dance like you want to win.
Wait
SEELE plan - evolve into new lifeform
Gendo plan - singularity
I don't know why SEELE thought everything was going according to plan up until the end though? It seems like nobody knew what was happening during 3rd impact and kept reading into it as signs that their plans were working, just like real religion.
I feel bad for Gendo. They never answer if he's really gone or will reincarnate or what. Yui says they've perverted life/death so they'll die, but says its also "not the end" for them.
Gendo's plan failed because Rei betrayed him, but everyone was combined into a single lifeform like Seele wanted. I don't think Seele wanted there to be a way to come back though, but that didn't happen until Shinji rejected instrumentality after the tang happened. But allowing people to come back also allows anyone who wants to be part of that single lifeform to continue being so. So it's the best of both worlds really.
Here's why NGE is unfinished
>20+ years
>Still no word of god to settle these arguments
Like seriously, there never were any answers. Anno is as bad as the guy who wrote LOST.
Explaining everything about a story is a bad thing. You can go too far in the other direction like Lost but Eva isn't anywhere near that level of clusterfuck. And Lost's problem isn't that it didn't explain everything, it's that it just seemed like they threw things at the wall and saw what would stick.
What argument is it that you feel the need to be settled?
>Explaining everything about a story is a bad thing.
It literally never is. Only Yea Forums posers think this. Maybe immediately after, or during the actual narrative but through interviews/supplemental material? Nah
What was Gendo's fate, what was Yui's fate (past the obvious floating through space as a robot), what is the state of the world after EoE, why do Shinji and Asuka emerge from the LCL with clothes, what's with the time loop stuff, is the manga just another recursion, will the people that died in 2nd impact come back (since chamber of guf emptied its balls), how did Shinji survive on a primordial earth,

Toxoplasmosis
>What was Gendo's fate
ded
>what was Yui's fate (past the obvious floating through space as a robot)
why do you need to know more
>what is the state of the world after EoE
probably fucked
>why do Shinji and Asuka emerge from the LCL with clothes
who cares
>what's with the time loop stuff
whats the point of asking questions about the rebuilds when theyre not finished
>is the manga just another recursion
depends on what happens in 3.0+1.0
>will the people that died in 2nd impact come back
why would you even think that
>how did Shinji survive on a primordial earth
where is the primordial earth
>It literally never is. Only Yea Forums posers think this. Maybe immediately after, or during the actual narrative but through interviews/supplemental material? Nah
Explaining everything about a work in interviews is worse than doing it in the story itself. Chances are, your personal thoughts/interpretation about something are more interesting than what the author was thinking.
SEL
>What was Gendo's fate
Gendo dies as punishment for how he treats Shinji.
>what was Yui's fate (past the obvious floating through space as a robot)
What do you mean past that? She floats in space for all eternity unless she meets aliens. There is no need for anymore information.
>what is the state of the world after EoE
You see the world. It is quite post-apocalyptic.
>why do Shinji and Asuka emerge from the LCL with clothes
Probably the same reason Asuka has the bandages. It has probably to do with how they view themselves right before they become tang. But it is largely inconsequential. And the true reason is probably that they didn't want the characters to be naked for the final scene.
>what's with the time loop stuff
That is only the rebuilds.
>is the manga just another recursion
Manga is its own thing.
>will the people that died in 2nd impact come back
Only if Rei would go get them with her time travel powers.
>how did Shinji survive on a primordial earth
Do you mean post EoE? It is not really part of the story being told. But there might still be plants and animals around.
>ded
what even is death though, since he exists in the rebuilds which are clearly a sequel, and the manga he's with Yui in the robot despite her telling him he's dead.
>why do you need to know more
Because she's the driving force between most of the story's conflict, if not all.
>why would you even think that
Because 2nd impact opened the chamber of Guf, like I said, and the anti-AT field collected a bunch of souls. The chamber of guf reappeared during third impact, possibly mixing the souls from 2nd impact with the ones from 3rd.
>where is the primordial earth
Thats what third impact does "returned Earth to its beginning state. They say it explicitly at least once. Even if instrumentality failed 3rd impact still happened without a hitch.
>he exists in the rebuilds which are clearly a sequel
yeah but they're almost certainly not conventional sequels, it's some au fuckery
>she's the driving force between most of the story's conflict, if not all
kinda...? but I don't see why you need to know more than "had an existental crisis and decided to become a permament monument to humanity"
>the anti-AT field collected a bunch of souls
where are you getting that
it makes more sense for adams guf to be doing the opposite
>Chances are, your personal thoughts/interpretation about something are more interesting than what the author was thinking.
People like to meme this, but I don't think its ever been true for anything ever. I read fiction because I want someone else's story, if I wanted to write my own ending I'd make my own narrative.
See, the fact that we can debate this crap means there isn't satisfying resolution.
>Gendo dies as punishment for how he treats Shinji.
He dies as punishment for his other sins against nature, his treatment of Shinji was exceptional, considering.
But he's also inside Shinji's instrumentality in Ep25-26. And the EVA eats him, but it really isn't the EVA, it doesn't even make sense. Its just masturbatory revenge porn. Can Rei take the form of Unit01 and cut people in half? That doesn't compute.
>That is only the rebuilds.
Are you just rejecting the continuity? The rebuilds take place after the main series, hence the main series has time loops because they translate into the rebuilds and are part of the canon...
>where are you getting that
>it makes more sense for adams guf to be doing the opposite
Chamber of Guf is where all the unborn souls are kept, that's why instrumentality was sorta a return to the womb thing. With Adam or Lilith opens it is inconsequential. There's some theories that Adam used it to give the angels souls though.
>I read fiction because I want someone else's story
This doesn't mean the author has to shove every bit of symbolism or every tiny little plot point down your throat. The best stories aren't endless exposition to make sure that the readers/watchers share the exact same thoughts as the author. But at the same time the best stories aren't vague bullshit where nothing is explained. It's a fine line and Eva does a good job of making things relatively coherent while not shoving exposition down the watchers' throats.
>But he's also inside Shinji's instrumentality in Ep25-26
SEPARATE ENDINGS
and it's gendo's instrumentality there, not shinji's
>And the EVA eats him, but it really isn't the EVA, it doesn't even make sense. Its just masturbatory revenge porn.
it's just shinji doing his normal oedipus complex stuff
it's not hard to understand
>The rebuilds take place after the main series, hence the main series has time loops because they translate into the rebuilds and are part of the canon..,
this is like asking why jar jar binks didn't appear in a new hope
I liked the manga's primordial ooze ending as opposed to the anime's illogical ocean popping convolution.
>But he's also inside Shinji's instrumentality in Ep25-26
Episode 25-26 is obviously different from EoE in how instrumentality is handled. There is no reference that Rei would have betrayed Gendo nor is there any reference that Shinji would be in control.
>And the EVA eats him, but it really isn't the EVA, it doesn't even make sense. Its just masturbatory revenge porn
It is just cool visuals to make it look interesting. Yui is making him pay by not letting him into instrumentality, and she is represented by unit-01.
>Are you just rejecting the continuity? The rebuilds take place after the main series, hence the main series has time loops because they translate into the rebuilds and are part of the canon...
We have no idea how the rebuilds works in relation to NGE. We just have to wait and see what happens when 3.0+1.0 comes out.
>and it's gendo's instrumentality there, not shinji's
That doesn't make sense, if he's dead. Wasn't 25+26 just suppose to have occurred in between a certain point in EoE (I forget which)?
no, that's fan theory bullshit
>. Yui is making him pay by not letting him into instrumentality
That's why we need clarification on what Yui is actually doing. Not letting him into instrumentality is at best a power asspull and at worst hypocritical past belief. Fucking SEELE and cannibalistic child rapists (probably) got tanged
I always theorized that Yui was taking him with her into space, but as people pointed out the violent nature is incompatible. It really just seemed like revenge porn with no explanation.
Explaining after the story is over is the worst thing you can do, shitty j.k. rowling tier crap. Again manga shitters prove that Anno was right to avoid the wishes of otaku.
Yui has power because she is Unit-01 which is the reason third impact can happen in the first place. She punishes him for his crimes against her son, which is why she doesn't punish SEELE.
Though I guess both Rei and Kaworu were there as well so they would have that power anyway and have the same motive. Since both liked Shinji.
>it's gendo's instrumentality there, not shinji's
Wait what?
Why did his instrumentality involve having his son in a SOL anime with Asuka and Rei?
It was a great delivery
Gendo is actually an otaku who has watched one too many anime romcoms.
Honestly I don't know why Yui would do that because I don't know what Gendo did wrong, I was under the assumption they were in on it together. That's one of several reasons why I have a problem with EoE, Gendo was flawed for sure but he still cared about rei, shinji, and yui. He did it all for them and honestly if yui did kill him thats just shitty.
the SOL anime is a necessary part of him coming to his realization about loving himself, which is necessary for his AT field to collapse and for him to join the hivemind
The logical implication is that it's actually Shinji killing him, not Yui, but I guess the mere presence of Unit-01 confuses people.
They were not in on it together.
Everything hints towards that Yui acted on her own and Gendo got obsessed with getting her back. Which was his entire motivation for all he did.
Why is that the logical implications, because he apologize to him? He was surrounded by Yui, Rei and Kaworu, the most obvious implication is that one of them did it. And because Unit-01 is used for it the most obvious implication would be that Yui did it.
because oedipus complex
otherwise shinji only gets to fuck his mother and not kill his father
>which is the reason third impact can happen in the first place.
That's untrue. Third impact could've happened in various different ways. All the hebrew stuff was on SEELE's end, their plans were deeper than a simple singularity.
>She punishes him for his crimes against her son
You mean her crimes against her son? Gendo did relatively little to Shinji, besides coercing him into a robot, unfolding like Yui wanted. He was worst to Ritsuko and Rei.
Yui as a character does not seem the type to be vindictive either.
>adam/eve ending is dumb
>series directly mentions adam and Lilith through out.
He hated his father, that is enough for the complex. There is no reason to bend the story to try to fit whatever psychological theory Anno mentions in interviews.
There is nothing logical about Gendo being killed via telekinesis through miles of bedrock.
I just assume Rei is the one who killed Gendo, even if it was a Unit 01 image that did it.
there's telekinesis fucking any way you slice it, unless he committed suicide
>That's untrue. Third impact could've happened in various different ways
I meant that Unit-01 is the reason that third impact is happening at that time. It is the catalyst used for it.
>Gendo did relatively little to Shinji
He abandoned him and was in general pretty shitty towards him throughout, considering he was his son and he was fighting to save humanity from ruin.
Gendo getting betrayed by Rei is probably the most heartbreaking thing in the series, which is funny how low that leaves the bar when you think about it.
>He abandoned him and was in general pretty shitty towards him throughout, considering he was his son and he was fighting to save humanity from ruin.
I like what this user said
forgot too add
>Yui as a character does not seem the type to be vindictive either.
But she was one who loved her child, which is why it makes sense that would be her only gripe.
So Yui was a pawn of Seele? Or just caredmore about Shinji? Damn, Gendo got a bad hand.
It doesn't matter what he thinks inside his head when he acted. What matter is that his actions scared Shinji for life. And continued to bring him mental trouble while he was fighting angels by continuously acting distant towards him while also acting close towards Rei.
I know, which makes it stupid to introduce fine tuned telekinetic AT field blades at the very end of the series. If Shinji was deliberately killing him he could've tanged him, them materialized him in front of Unit 01 and dropped him. Besides shinji had too much going on to have fine control of that level, he was screaming and crying.
Which takes us back to it being nothing more than revenge porn without relevance or explanation. I mean itd probably screw up the messaging of the later half of EoE if its like "yeah its okay to reach out, even if it hurts you. but not for your dad, kill him"
Gendo loved Shinji. In the end the final joke is on his family for still holding onto that bit of hatred for humans even into the singularity. Gendos death is the blind rage of a child too young and a mother too driven by protective anomal instinct to understand a grown mans mind.
If he actually loved him maybe he should have tried to show it in some way instead of acting continuously shitty towards him.
>But she was one who loved her child, which is why it makes sense that would be her only gripe.
She didn't love him in the "I must protect him from emotional distress" sense. Otherwise she wouldn't have killed herself in front of him.
By that logic anyone that pissed Shinji off deserves death, which makes it even more of a an edgefest for self-inserts with a god complex
Gendo is clearly on the spectrum you racist.
It's a fathers job to make his son tough. Gendo didn't do it right, for sure, but he wasn't wrong. Shinji needed to become a man. Like all sons, he rejected his fathers harshness instead of trying to understand.
>She didn't love him in the "I must protect him from emotional distress" sense. Otherwise she wouldn't have killed herself in front of him.
She did it because the angels would have attacked anyway and then SEELE would have started instrumentality. Yui's action is what made it possible for Shinji to reject instrumentality.
>By that logic anyone that pissed Shinji off deserves death
He didn't just piss Shinji off. He neglected him for years while apparently caring for Rei as his own child.
And then demanded he pilot a giant robot, which hurts him if it takes any damage, which Shinji had no idea how to pilot and basically made him the last line of defense towards the death of humanity. All this while he continue to ignore him.
Childhood is hating your father because he was stern Adulthood is realizing that fathers have the heavy burden of being the disciplinary parent and that you would never have learned to face conflict if you didn't have your father to fight against. A father is kind to his daughters (Rei) and stern to his sons (Shinji)by nature.
He wasn't stern nor was he ever disciplinary. He ignored him or treated him with scorn. Simply telling him to pilot the Eva for nothing in return.
He even allowed Shinji to run away, or to use the Eva to attack NERV's base with little consequences. Next to none disciplinary actions taken
>caring for Rei as his own child.
Do you fuck your daughter user?
>He even allowed Shinji to run away, or to use the Eva to attack NERV's base with little consequences.
Yet going by that user's theory, Shinji still killed him for not being a sitcom dad. He wasn't particularly abusive or anything.
All men want to fuck their daughters.
>She did it because the angels would have attacked anyway and then SEELE would have started instrumentality. Yui's action is what made it possible for Shinji to reject
instrumentality.
I know, that's why I'm saying its hypocritical to kill Gendo for being emotionally neglectful. She did the same. Not just to Shinji but to Gendo (the fact that she didn't just leave him a note is a gaping plot hole that only gets spackled over because psychological-fags have such a low threshold for cohesion).
Opposite
Neglect is abuse.
As is emotionally manipulating him to pilot the Eva when he didn’t want to.
So did Gendo get killed and forced from instrumentality? How'd he get into instrumentality in episode 26 then? Why was he standing with Yui?
It is easier to judge others than it is too judge yourself.
And to call it a gaping plot hole is an exaggeration. Maybe she didn’t want to leave any evidence behind for SEELE to find.
Yeah, so? Why exclude someone from instrumentality because of that? Isn't the whole point of instrumentality to resolve the barriers between people? That basically defeats the entire purpose of the show if someone you have a bad relationship with gets kicked out rather than communicated with.
>Neglect is abuse.
Fuckin first-worlders. Gendo is his own dude he has no obligation to care for his offspring. There are orphanages my bro.
>emotionally manipulating
that's how it got played as but he was simply stating the facts. If shinji didn't do it the crippled girl would need to. Obviously he' prefer the more capable one, seeing as humanity is on the line.
>Maybe she didn’t want to leave any evidence behind for SEELE to find
Put the note in his bento the day of the tests and schedule them for 10am.
Or Gendo would never believe a loving, welcoming figure enough to let down all defenses, like he's talking about right before then, so that's the tanging he's able to accept. Or the more monstrous, less armored Unit 01 represents Unit 01, with its own mind that Yui had only been part of and still hates him on Shinji's behalf even if Yui's there smiling serenely.
The point of the show isn’t to try and have good relations with everyone.
Just that even good ones will have bad aspects.
It seems incredibly petty that you'd prevent your own father from entering a state of spiritual enlightment and communication for all humanity to resolve their personal conflicts. Kind of sad to be honest. Good, bad, it doesn't matter. Gendo should have been allowed in, if him being killed outright really is what happened that is.
What about instrumentality though.
Anyways it definitely requires word of god explanation.
Even third world children can suffer under neglect. Has nothing to do with privilege.
He could have called Shinji to him at any time and prepared him for the task he was about to lay on him.
Instead he waited till the last minute and told him nothing except to fight the giant monster too save the world or this injured girl has too.
What about it? Shinji rejects it.
Maybe Lilith is mad he gobbled the adam embryo? But that's pretty much what Kaworu was anyways.
It was Yui that did it.
And instrumentality is shown as something bad.
>Instead he waited till the last minute and told him nothing except to fight the giant monster too save the world or this injured girl has too.
He clearly didn't want shinji involved but it was absolutely necessary once Rei got hurt.
Gendo isn't even given a chance. Everyone else on the entire planet gets a chance.
There is no reason to assume he didn’t want Shinji involved, especially because he needed unit-01 for his plan.
Shouldn’t have been such a terrible father then, should he?
That kind of judgement wasn't made on anyone else.
Nobody else was Shinji’s father.
>EoTV; Shinji and Gendo and Yui happy in instrumentality, everyone is smiling
>to my father, thank you
>EoE; Gendo dies, Rei becomes god and disappears, Yui floats off into space to be an Eva, Shinji and Asuka pop out and it ends with Shinji choking Asuka while she calls him disgusting
What did Anno mean by this?
>stop sending me death threats
EoTV is instrumentality where all is happy and safe 24/7
EoE is reality
EoTV is the "true end" where instrumentality happens
every time instrumentality is rejected the cycle begins again, EoE does not take place after NGE
Imagine missing the point of the entire show this hard.
It wasn't even Gendo that broke all contact between them, he saw Shinji at least annually until Shinji refused. I don't think he cares about the grave either when he's talking about it being a fake and destroying his own mementos.
Imagine being this much of a bootlicking little dipshit.
Except that he neglected shinji for 10 years instead of indoctrinating him.
I mean Gendo is supposed to be a genius.
Go fuck yourself, you pretentious cunt. Shinji being a weakling and a coward all the way to the end doesn't add any meaning to the story, it just makes the story sad and depressing.
Because as he said in EoE, he didn’t want to deal with him.
Not because of some desire to keep him from piloting Eva’s unless he had too.
>every time instrumentality is rejected the cycle begins again
Kinda only works with the manga world. I don't understand how the Earth begins on the same trajectory when its populated by modern people that reject the LCL.
Deathnote
Only seeing your child once a year is still pretty bad. Probably why Shinji ran away.
Also he most likely destroyed the photos so that no one would realize the similarities with Rei.
And the grave is fake because the body dissolved in the Eva
I think everyone is forgetting how much of a mess Gendo was without yui around. He didn't want Shinji around because he was just a reminder of how Yui wasn't there.
It does add meaning because changing yourself isn’t that easy, especially considering his situation.
This is also the reason the show doesn’t end with Shinji saying he loves himself, instead only saying he can try to learn how to.
Shinji being a weakling and a coward IS the story.
Theblast two episodes are garbage because they have no narrative structure whatsoever and the ending of shinji just deciding that he wants to live feels like a copout when there's nothing actually happening to him which should cause him to change his ways.
Isn't the only difference between SEELE and Gendo's plan who gets to inhabit Unit 01?
The point is that I don't have sympathy for someone so fucking worthless.
Yes, it is. My point is that this doesn't make the story deeper, just sadder. And even then, only if you pity the main character, and frankly I fucking do not.
This is retarded because Shinji isn't a blank slate character and he's not even a good character for escapism or wish fulfillment because he's miserable most of the time. Any points you made about self inserts are redundant.
I don't think people thought it was bad, it was certainly interesting. People hated it because it pretty much interrupted the story and shat on it, It was interesting as its own thing but as a series finale it sucked ass.
Why don't normalfags sympathize with Shinji?
Every "Eva isn't deep" argument stems from authors admitting that christian imagery and title of the show were there because they were cool. It's about interpersonal relationships and human condition, you mongoloids. No one gives jack shit about explosions shaped like crosses, Liltih being on cross and Adam & Eve imagery because that isn't what shows is actually about. Get it through your thick skulls, casuals.
So basically you just have shit taste, got it.
Shinji being a coward and a weakling isn't supposed to be deep. It just portrays MC as someone who doesn't want to be MC. He's a sad kid without parents who doesn't understand much about life and, as such, much more real.
You don't know what redundant means.
>not a blank slate
lmao. He's supposed to be your average uninspired underachiever faggot like you or me. That's why the whole thing begins without him just being thrust into the plot from an irrelevant origin. There are parts that are wish fufilment like Misato or Asuka grinding on him, or being a super important guy who decides the fate of the world, and there are parts that are the >tfw so relatable bro type of self-inserting.
But he wasn't cool and strong and shit, that means he sucks as a character!
Exactly the problem with casual fags. Thinking that every "character" has to adheer to tropes and cliches. "Personality? Fuck that. Gimme some badasstitude because I'm a fucking brainlet."
...but he's also a total pussy a lot of the times and generally fucks everything up, meaning that if people DO self insert or project onto Shinji, they also have to face the idea tbat THEY are possibly not a cool main character. So even if Shinji is a self-insert, he's a damn good deconstruction of one.
Seele want humankind destroyed as a colony of flawed and separate entities, and reborn in its original form as a perfect single being. Gendo wants at least Yui and himself preserved.
If you don't pity or empathise with the MC then this show clearly wasn't for you. That's kinda the whole point of the show. Your essentially a Nazi watching Schindler's list.
I wonder sometimes if all those parody comics with Shinji being some mary sue were mocking casuals. I'm afraid I know what the answer is though.
Cringe.
How do people not understand that without fail every skinny kid with shaggy black hair for a protagonist is intended for self-insert purposes? Otherwise you'd actually put some effort into the character design of your protagonist.
"REEEEE! It's not possible that I would suck as protagonist. It's a lie that I would be socially awkward nitwit when surrounded by chicks." This is what they fear.
Why'd you have to say that. God damn it. Now you've ruined the thread forever.
You're thinking too hard. When Shinji pussies out everyone can be like
>same
>totally what I'd do
>tfw
He's not for people powertripping but for the type that gets off on the attention of tragic circumstances (t. teenagers).
Is this why people dislike Shinji? Excluding people who just don't care about the show at all.
I dunno dude, Shinji acts pretty cringy when he pussies out. Most teenagers like edgy emo kinds of dudes, not some geniunely pathetic person.
>Gendo wants at least Yui and himself preserved.
That happens in the N64 game right?
When i was a teenager all I remember is talking about how much I empathized with shinji and how he probably did better than I ever could.
Now that I have no empathy as an adult fuck that guy.
I'm glad EoE exists though, knowing what the team could do, and how they delivered with EoE, I'm glad episodes 25 and 26 weren't the end.
20 is not an adult, barely more than a teenager yourself.
>2015 + 3.0 + 1.0
>still no 3.0 + 1.0
I JUST WANT TO SEE MY WAIFU AGAIN FUCK YOU FUCK YOU LET ME SEE MY WAIFU ON THE BIG SCREEN LET ME LET ME
I don't find him compelling whatsoever. All his existential musing are the most base form of depression possible. There's nothing interesting about the problems he faces mentally, most of us have faced them and overcome them during our nihilistic phase.
I find Asuka or Rei's psyches much more compelling.
>implying you're going to watch it on the big screen and not download it and watch it on your computer later
Did any of the rebuild movies get US (or I guess other international) releases actually?
I wouldn't say that it's the reason everyone hates him, but I think there is pretty big portion of people who are total weebs and consume self-inserting media every day. Evangelion just breaks their illusion.
Fair enough, but he's not a shit character because of it. I like Asuka and Gendo the most myself, as characters anyway. I also can sympathize way more. But to say Shinji is a bad character is retarded.
the ran out of budget thing is a myth though which i think makes the original ending even better imo
I'm not 20 but lemme guess you're like 22 or something, I forget the rule of to reverse engineer an age of an user by using whatever age they bring up when shit talk
He's not just an average uninspired underachiever. The dude is a pathetic, depressed individual who has massive issues socialising. Most attempts at his character have been massively watered down with the character getting over himself and becoming a Gary stu by the end. Shinji only manages not to hate himself by the last few episodes and not in an edgy emo way but a depressing way. Dudes just fucked.
>implying I dont have a massive big screen at home to watch SoL anime with the curtains drawn so nobody sees my degenerate hobbies but blasting the full surround so they hear it anyways
*knock knock*
*pauses anime*
uh, i heard a lot of voices of little girls, what's going on in here?
j-just watching g-game of thrones
amazing show right?
y-yeah s-so good
2020 r-right guys?
I don't even care that the Rebuilds are retarded, I just wanna see it
how tf did you draw the conclusion shinji learned to love himself at the end of EoE, that whole movie is just him becoming a bigger and bigger piece of shit withdrawing further away from everyone before trying to strangle asuka, ud have 2 be retarded to think he learned to love himself in EoE
Hi Gendo.
I mean his character development arc should've ended thematically when he was stuck in the entry plug. Shinji's entire character seems to reset the status quo 1 episode after he supposedly learns something, making EoE and maybe episode 24 the only episodes that actual matter if you ascribe to the belief that the conflict isn't about the robots, but shinji's mental health..
I just want to see it, laugh at it and all the people that liked Rebuilds. When dust settles, they'll see that it was shit all along compared to the original.
shinji has a lot in common with donald trump's son
>beast mode!
Times I cringed so hard I almost shat myself
I used to get in arguments back in 2015 with some faggot obsessed with the hedgehog's dilemma and insisting that Asuka was caressing his cheek in the final scene.
It does... kind of. By that episode Shinji confronts his father and is, essentially, a man. Which is why in EoTV he is angry at himself, not his father. And why he forgives his father at the end.
The thing that makes the show interesting though is how many people clearly haven't had those musings and would prefer Asta as the MC. There's no doubt that Shinji interacting with the other characters is what makes the show great. In order for that to work though the characters need to have some deep flaws otherwise its basically Gurren Lagan.
I thought he did and that's why he left instrumentality. He is told that others will not tell him it is okay to live, and I'm pretty sure he learns that he must love himself to live. Or I was wrong, I dunno. That ending scene really makes me question my interpretation of EoE, that and the part where Gendo gets, eaten or something I dunno.
Bologna pony
For the ending thing, I think that Shinji spent some time alone, seeing how he erected gravemarkers. He probably started getting paranoid that he might be in hell or sumshit
would Rei be ok with me masturbating in front of her?
>N64 game
I think the ending is just EoE again except Shinji kills all the MPs, still has a nervous breakdown off-screen, still ends up on Impact Beach with Asuka but they hold hands.
She wouldn't be against it
She'd probably offer to help out so you wouldn't be distracted piloting the Eva.
Ah its the NGE2 game for PS2
>In NGE2
>In the Neon Genesis Evangelion 2 game, Gendo's plan culminates with all human souls merging inside Eva-01. Gendo and Shinji are at last reunited with Yui.
that was a good doujin
its been a while since we had a good rei doujin now
Haha what? There's a doujin? Damn I didn't even know I was just making shit up. Time to fap.
>While the above explanation is given repeatedly throughout the series and End of Evangelion, a scene in the latter suggests there is more to Seele's plan for Instrumentality. However, Seele's objectives are greatly expanded upon in the game Neon Genesis Evangelion 2. The Classified Information and the Seele ending of the game discuss a very different form of Instrumentality than seen in the series - Seele intend for Instrumentality to only be for their own council members. Rather than forming a sea of LCL, Seele wish to be merged inside an Evangelion unit with its own S² Engine, after destroying the Spear of Longinus. By placing their own souls within the body of a godlike being, and destroying the only weapon that can harm the body, they would effectively create an immortal God with human soul which would represent the pinnacle of human existence, and live through all of eternity. Seele's plan as presented in the game is unconcerned with the rest of humanity. While the council members are to be joined in the Godlike being, all other humans will cease to exist.
>In the New Theatrical Edition, Seele's plans are different from the original series : according to Kaworu, it is now a "rite of artificial evolution" brought upon mankind in which "old life"(the Lilin) is sacrificed to create a new race of being blessed with the Fruit of Life. Still according to him, it has been programmed "since time immemorial".
I wonder if anyone on evageeks has killed someone over eva theories yet
>he didnt know
man you are lucky, i have fapped to every single hentai doujin there is to find of evangelion
She'll just keep on reading one of her books or staring off into space as if you weren't there but occasionally find herself glancing up out of curiosity.
Shinji is probably only alive because he's drinking the LCL
He's drinking souls to live.
Or maybe even third impact couldn't kill those fucking cicada.
Yes, actually it does. The fact that he realistically fills the roll of a pathetic fucking loser doesn't change the fact that he is, nor does it make me care more about his failures. If wishing I hadn't spent 12 hours watching a faggot fail to save the world entirely because of his refusal to even try, then cook me up a well done steak and bring out the fucking ketchup.
Who would you like to see be the protagonist then or would you just wish you never watched the show?
26 episodes and a movie just to be like
>See faggots, you say "I wish everyone were dead", but this is what its actually like.
Honestly though pretty happy ending from my POV. At least he has one other person he's forced to interact with, and its a cute girl. Thats more that I can say for myself.
I don't think its physically drinking the souls if you drink LCL.
Its more like the soul leaves the body and floats around, with the body becoming generic LCL. The soul can then use whatever LCL it comes across to reform a body.
And there is probably plant life and maybe animal life still remaining, they did call it the "Human Instrumentality Project" so maybe just humans or intelligent animals like PenPen were tanged.
Otherwise I don't know how a tree or amoeba could "imagine themself in their own heart" to come back.
Just not a fan of "mankind gets completelly destroyed even after dozens of episodes fighting the bad guys"
>B-but Shinji and Asuka
Will fucking starve to death, even the narration stated that mankind is over what means that they will not survive long enough to play Adam and Eve.
>And there is probably plant life and maybe animal life still remaining
Nah they said earth is reverting back to the primordial state. I don't think Shinji will be able to filter feed on microorganisms.
What I would have liked is for him to have redeemed himself. To admit that it doesn't fucking matter whether or not he's happy when the survival of humanity is on the line. Get in the machine and do your job.
It''d be cool if Shinji and Asuka find their own skeletons in 4.0
Shinji and Asuka will be fine.
Naked Rei's head could feed them for several hundred lifetimes.
Have you ever heard of a niche anime called Gurren Lagan? It might appeal to you a bit more.
Or FLCL...
I fucking love gurren lagann, but the fags here call me a reddit using pleb for doing so. But that's not quite what I mean. TTGL was about learning to believe in yourself. Eva should have been about getting over yourself.
>99 anime where he gets in the robot
Best shit ever
>1 anime where he doesn't
Fuck this show and fuck this guy, pussy ass faggot.
Well yes! Being uncommon doesn't make it less lame! Just GET IN THE FUCKING ROBOT!
I mean the show could be about that but then it wouldn't really be the same show. I doubt people would still be talking about it today if it was. Also he kinda does by the last episode its just not a typical straight journey there. In EoE he doesn't really though and he pays for it.
In the anime there is no indication that he prevented the third impact or instrumentality, merely that he may have escaped it.
Just say you wanted some shitty SoL instead.
No, I want a compelling protagonist. Not the child version of the guy from Welcome to the NHK
I want characters that are meant to be characters and not reflections of large swaths of the program's intended audience.
Why the fuck the other alien civilizations who earned the fruit of knowledged didn't send reinforcements to help humans?
Either way seems like a bum deal for him.
How would they know?
I mean I guess Gendo could fit into the story but what would compel him to not engage instrumentality?
They did but they're so far away they couldn't get there instantly. They'll finally show up in 4.0.
Him realizing that his grief for his wife does not outweigh his duty to protect his son.
this
I think he'd need to reconnect with Shinji (a mentally stable ver), Ritsuko would need to try and kill him earlier, Rei's humanification by meeting Shinji would need to progress faster; then Rei would need to try and convince him of his folly.
I wonder what it would've taken to see everyone get what they wanted, and what would come after?
Certainty could work. The guts of that are there in story already. Would make it more of a redemption story though.
Am I forgetting something? Why did he become such a soulless dick immediately after Shinji arrived. He never acted like that towards Rei during the main thing.
Now that I think about, why the fuck was Rei living in some abandoned foundry? Why didn't she share a room with Gendo or something?
I mean he does kinda need Shinji to get in the robot to save the world so he could reasonably only protect him so much.
Maybe watching her nearly die bring back the trauma of losing his wife, so he forgot for a second that she is just a clone.
3 seasons, with Asuka, Shinji, and Rei alternating protagonist roles. A prequel about Yui/Gendo, Kaji/Misato. A spinoff manga about Kaworu.
His autism was brought out on reaction to seeing a replica of his wife hurt. He similarly freaks out when Rei goes to self-destruct even though its the only option and she just gets a body replacement.
Though there is that one scene of Shinji looking at Rei and Gendo talking to each other smiling, it happens once in an early episode and then never again.
As for where Rei lives, idk. Even sending Rei to school and letting her interact with others was a terrible idea for his plan since hanging around Shinji is what eventually lead her to revolt.
Rei seems to almost die a lot though from thereon out. And she'd already died when naoko killed her.
Dude was obsessed with his wife. Shinji was a happy by product but after she died Shinji probably reminded him that she wasn't around anymore. So he distanced himself and set his efforts on trying to revive her. Weirdly enough I think that if Shinji was a girl he wouldn't have abandoned him. However as he's a boy he probably sees himself in Shinji and clearly doesn't like what he sees.
>why the fuck was Rei living in some abandoned foundry? Why didn't she share a room with Gendo or something?
Even in the apocalypse a man like Gendo can be felled by a metoo moment.
>As for where Rei lives, idk. Even sending Rei to school and letting her interact with others was a terrible idea for his plan since hanging around Shinji is what eventually lead her to revolt.
I like to think that he subconsciously wanted her and Shinji to be friends so his family could be reuinited.
I think subconsciously is the best you're gonna get from a man like Gendo.
For me, the final two episodes were frustrating because it was concluding the character arcs and running themes of the show in a literal therapy session that doesn't even exist in its own world rather than doing it through actual storytelling (which is what we got in EoE). It's a good example of why you can't be lazy and just show the stripped character development with literally nothing else, and should actually continue your plot and write real dialogue. Just because it was slow and boring doesn't mean that it was good art
Surely you mean an uncharacteristic lack of autism on his part?
Rei betraying Gendo was done really well in the manga, made it real heart wrenching. Like he clearly felt for her, and I believe he loved Ritsuko as well (there's no reason for him to lie at that moment). But then his only 2 remaining allies absolutely betray him right at the end (well, theres still Fuyutsuki, but he sorta betrayed him as well).
I mean the idea of instrunentality is pretty out there. Taking an abstract artistic approach towards it isn't exactly not in the framework of the story telling. Even if they had the budget and time it wasn't exactly a bad way to do it.
Evangelion doesn't have a real ending, the TV ending is low budget and unfinished and EOE is Anno throwing a childish tantrum.
Not everything has a happy ending. Not in stories, not in real life.
Intelligent, Nihilistic and with a Wicked Sense of Humor
So what you fucking nigger, it's true. God I hate stupid fags like you who can only respond with fucking memes. Bad endings happen, it's fucking true you blind dipshit.
The ending can be sad without mankind being completelly destroyed.
Mankind is not guaranteed to have a happy ending.
oh shit, he's actually 12
Rei is best girl
So? Again, I'm right. Just because it's edgy doesn't mean it's wrong.
>Not in stories
>humans spend 10,000 years creating narrative structure most enjoyable to us
>claim you know better
Why do people do this?
Because I am better.
It can survive for some time and still have a sad ending, but again I didn't said it was bad, I'm just not a fan of watching heroes watching the world being destroyed even after all their fight and without any reason besides shock value.
I think what bothered me the most is that they tried to portray it a somehow a bittersweet ending because Shinji got some kind of epiphany about his depression instead of a full tragic tone.
Everything you Evafags overanalyse is a projection of your own views and experiences. Anno made a really basic action show with a bitch faggot as a protagonist, and anyone that finds anything deep in the meaningless shit is rationalising themselves. Fuck Evafags.
Patrician ships
Rei x Gendo
Asuka x Kaworu
Kaji x Asuka
ships can't be patrician
Strangling Asuka made it full tragic.
Back to tumblr, faggot
everyone x crippling depression
everyone x crippling depression is tumblr's preferred ship (from what I remember back in 2013)
>Anno made a really basic action show with a bitch faggot as a protagonist
Then he's literally insane for making an entire meta bullshit episode about a dreaming Shinji analizing his feelings and trauma without any action scene at all.
I beat SoL Rei rode Gendo's baloney pony and caused Yui to divorce him
The Angelic Days/Ikari Raising project spinoffs really erase Rei's thirst. She lives with Gendo/Yui calls them auntie/uncle.
>Supplemental material all assign a harem to the one character that is the furthest from one
If that isn't proof of Shinji's interpreted self-insert status, I don't know what is.
People self insert as protagonists. What are you gonna do?
Did Gendo really deserve any of this shit? I know Ritsuko and her mom tried to show him affection, but they were kinda psychotic too.
I mean from his perspective his son shows up and cucks his daughterwife.
>vore was their fetish and this is a romantic scene
But seriously remember how Unit-01 absorbs things into itself by eating it? Hint hint.
What the fuck do people see in Eva?
It starts off as monster of the week, then moves on to some pretentious and boring as fuck dialogue with the same cuts you've already seen before with nothing actually being resolved.
The last two episodes is the sole reason i don't really like the series
The manga is very good.
Exactly. That's why we like it.
>we
You make it sound so terrible.
I bet you don't like Twin Peaks either.
I just like Asuka and Rei.
No deeper reason than that.
I guess some people like it for the waifu shit but they clearly weren't watching EoE close enough.
Why? One of them is a whiny bitch and the other one literally doesn't have a personality.
Asuka is a great tsundere because she's genuinely got issues and therefore is like real person. She'd be horrible to be around.
>Asuka
>tsundere
It's good for what it is, but the storytelling style in the last two episodes is very different from all the other episodes.
Was Asuka ever actually mean to someone who wasn't a fucking spergtard? She's pretty popular at school
twin peaks went downhill real fast
Are you gonna tell me that she's not tsundere now?
Network fucked them pretty hard on that though.
Not so sure. its been a while since i last saw it but she's certainly pretty arrogant which can be good for brownie points when in school but not so much when you're older.
I mean she has college degrees and is a captain in the German airforce... at 14, its not really misplaced.
>implying that Evangelion give a fuck about any non Shinji relationship
All evangelion characters only exist to interact with Shinji.
have you seen the return?
Also makes sense why people at school would like her. She's impressive academically.
13 actually, at least for the college degree in NGE.
Rebuild Asuka was the airforce captain and might have been aged up to 14.
Im too jewish to pay for showtime so I've never gotten around to it.
>I mean she has college degrees and is a captain in the German airforce... at 14, its not really misplaced.
That is disturbingly close to Mary Sue story. And I mean the literal original Mary Sue character that inspired the term
Mary Sue is not full of flaws like Asuka tho.
Thats why shes way more compelling than Shinji, who turned his adversity into absolutely nothing substantive.
you can just torrent it, and not to overhype it, but I can say its the best television I've seen
Plays well into her character. Being smart and constantly seeking validation will do that to you.
Its more of a deconstruction of the child/teen prodigy trope, since Asuka basically sacrificed a normal childhood to achieve those feats and had no meaningful friends in those years.
Then in practice her years of Eva training did not prepare her for the kind of monsters the angels were, and Asuka is very unaccustomed to the idea of failure after breezing through academics, so it hits her particularly hard.
I mean they are both compelling characters. Pretty much two sides of the same coin. Asuka is an overachiever as she craved validation while Shinju retreated from the world to deal with his pain.
Explain how she is.
If he didn't like NGE's ending, he sure as hell won't like the Return
I mean in simple terms she treats Shinji like ass a lot of the time but also likes him. They both has massive personal and communication issues which is why it works. She resents Shinji but also relates to him at the same time.
youre probably right
Not the same guy, but when she told Shinji that the door to her room was "the Wall of Jericho", that was referencing the wall of Jericho the Israelites brought down with a trumpet after walking around the wall for seven days with the Ark. She was playing hard to get. She wanted Shinji to breach the wall and conquer her. She acted mean and disinterested towards him, but she wanted him, but in the end, he just proved to be a disappointment. She wanted to open up to Shinji, but she realized there was no way he could help her when he couldn't help himself.
Imagine missing the point of End of Evangelion THIS hard
You'd have to be legitimately fucking retarded to post something like this seriously
Asuka isn't just a tsundere, she's the pinnacle of what a tsundere should be. She's a bitch but there's a good reason for that.
Spot on man. I think people who have been watching too many watered down modern tsunderes don't even recognise good ones anymore because they've become so ridiculous.
>flaws
25 and 26 aren't flaws and 26 was actually voted as second best episode of any tv show ever by Animage readers. The only people who hate those episodes are idiots. They are actually quite good and laid down the foundation for Anno's stylistic developments that would be seen later in Kare Kano, which has many sequences that are almost exactly like 25 and 26.
Not the guy you're responding to but
>being a flat out cunt != tsundere
I mean in most anime if they're female and a cunt then yea they are a tsundere but only because they're so flatly written. Asuka is a good tsundere. Not because she's she's a nice person but because she's believable.
I don't like the idea that a character being believable makes them good. It's a piece of fiction after all.
I mean they only need to act believable within the context of the story they exist in. Eva is going for a more realistic feel with the characters and their motivations so it works. You can also have completely outlandish characters in a piece of fiction and that works too as long its it meshes well with the story.
Reminder that Evangelion is so bad that the script can be accurately generated by today's neural nets.
Asuka would never be interested in Shinji's thimble dick and thinking otherwise is an insult to a great girl who deserves far better.
This was before she realized just how much of a lost cause he is. She probably thought he just needed a push in the right direction and he would mature real quick.
And then he proved that assumption very wrong
Blind leading the blind.
No idea if that script is right or not but are you this retarded? Where do you think it's pulling from?
Thank God you're not a storyteller then.
I never said believable characters aren't good, only that them being believable doesn't make them inherently good.
gendo is too emotional
It is a pretty good Koji, though. He had a crazy fragile ego any time something happened that wasn't about him.
It's kinda like people who watch Star Wars and fret about the technological minutia behind lightsabers and spaceships
this gent knows.
t.brainlet
Story wise theyre shit. But you cant deny theyre goddamn beautiful to look at.
I disagree. The CGI is awful and hugely distracting
>he thinks catharsis means the character has instantly grown
Shinjis decision is based on him believing that regardless of how shitty the world and himself are theres still a sight possibility for change for the good and that probability is better than instrumentality
Fair point the cgi is shitty at times but i raise you pic related
I dont get it
Its fucking gorgeous to look at
t. Shinji
We don't really know that. I mean in the 3 months or so that passed between his concclusion and the strangling, he could've realized what a fucking dolt he was.
I agree. 26 is fucking great. It's pretty therapeutic for someone with Shinji's issues too
>the final two episodes of the TV series are the pinnacle of the show and possibly anime as a medium
Imagine having your budget cut on an anime that you put your heart and soul into, having to put a bunch of shit together that you know makes the worst possible conclusion for the series for the fans who have loved it every step of the way up until this point. It's so bad you remake it at every opportunity to make it a better conclusion. You even split most of the staff off of the original studio for more creative control in order to make a final series of movies that should make for an even more wonderful conclusion. And then have a bunch of faggots say that the only stuff that you did that mattered was the shit you could only haphazardly slapped together when you had no money to pay the creative staff.
Damn
I doubt Anno would be mad. He even included letters praising the original endings in EoE.
Weakling retards are only compelling to weakling retards.
Otaku are the ones who embraced shinji
>all supplemental material is harem/ecchi pandering
>Rei Smile.gif
thot was remembering gendo
Dragon Ball Z super has backgrounds that are "gorgeous to look at"
Incorrect. Re-evaluate your wrong opinions.
>Gendo is joined with Yui in the Eva forever
I want to believe
Except for the fact he says "So this is my punishment..."
>inb4 Gendo's first and last attempt at sarcasm
Cant place the blame all on supplimental materials when the main series did it too.
Shinji has the other 2 main pilot girls interested with him, a homo angel interested in him, and Misato shoves her toungue down his throat at the end. Then Rebuild adds Mari.
>Rei using Eva 1 never resulted on her absorbing her original self memories and thinking she is Shinji mother
Wasted opportunity
Fuck you, Gendo didn't deserve to die and it would be way out of line with the entire story for him to be killed so pettily.
>he thinks 26 was the result of budget cuts
moron
you do realize anno has said he won't take back the tv ending because it represents him at the time of their production?
>forgetting Kaji went all fujobait on his ass too
But honestly Asuka wasn't into him at all the first time around, but it definitely played that way with brainlets
I remember bumping into a fanfic long once where after discovering truth of her genetics, Rei decides to legit act as Shinji's mom. Was weird.
People like to use that to justify not liking it despite that Anno has time and time again said that it best represents his true vision for the series ending.
>otaku being okay with even more evidence that Gendo was going balls deep into their 14 yr old waifu
impossible
Gendo is part of the group of people responsible for 3 billion people being wiped out and the ensuing fallout.
He deserved nothing
If Misato and Asuka were included in instrumentality despite dying horribly a short period before then Gendo can visit, even if he ends up exiled in space with Yui.
He definitely deserved what he got. And it is in no way out of line with the story, nor is it petty.
Its honestly the most incomprehensible part of EoE (even though you don't realize it until your 5th or 6th time because so much is going on), but its clear in the message it wanted to send the viewer - of not!YourDad getting his "just desserts".
Is Rei even 14?
I think she'd have to be born after Yui died, and undergone accelerated growth. She is probably 9 at most.
what is Asuka's arc beyond the audience finding out what happened to her mother?
her quest for the D
Wrong, wrong, and wrong again. He did not deserve it because he didn't do anything wrong, it does not fit with the themes of the story, and it would be absolutely petty to prevent your own husband from entering the afterlife just because you and him don't see eye to eye on childrearing.
>inb4 Gendo didn't raise Shinji
He did, just not the way a woman would.
Only way it makes sense is in a "man who tries to become god or act like a god has to sacrifice his own self as punishment for an unholy act" sort of thing.
Losing her sanity and becoming worse and worse at piloting the Eva as she realizes having no friends and no human connection, even less than Shinji, wasn't even worth it in the end because in reality she didn't have the skills necessary to competantly fight angels.
Child prodigy discovering the real world will cause her to encounter failure, she can't handle it because success is the only way she feels she can get care from others without being hurt due to her parents not loving her and being brought up with the sole goal of piloting.
She finds out her mom was still unconditionally loving her (in an odd way) all along, which lets her break out of the prior thought process.
And then she kinda dies and is just left pissed off and bitter over what happened.
The theme of the story is not to forgive bad people.
And Gendo did not raise Shinji in anyway, neither as a woman nor a man. He was actively avoiding Shinji. You might as well say that every human on the planet raise every child that exists then.
Gendo wasn't a bad person. He had a hard life and a hard burden to carry. Shinji could not be raised with kindness if humanity was to survive. It was necessary for him to sacrifice his only son to see his wife again and stop Seele. Fuyutsuki knew this. He loved Shinji, and he did show it. Gendo is an allegory for the emotionally distant salaryman father in japan who cares for his family but is not given the luxury of showing it.
But I made peace with my father. It's not healthy for a man to resent his father beyond middle school.
What about the part where he let 3 billion people die?
Gendo never had a hard life. He didn't care about humanities survival or SEELE, and saving humanity did not have to include treating Shinji as shit anyway. He never even cared about Shinji at all.
Isn't he an alright cello player?
>and he did show it
When did he show it? Do you honestly think that going to his mothers grave once a year is enough to show that he loved him?
Gotta break a few eggs.
He did show it, by making Shinji man up and take on adult responsibilities.
>inb4 that's mean
It's necessary.
All I want is to see Mari smugly stealing Asuka fuckboy and carry him in her arms while the world explode for the fourth time.
>He did show it, by making Shinji man up and take on adult responsibilities.
How did he do that exactly? Shinji never did manned up so obviously he failed either way. Maybe if he actually talked to his son things would have worked better.
I liked how the manga depicted her arc.
>there's a reason why she's gone from comatose 0 sync rate to wrecking mass production units 9v1
Why did EoE just want us to ignore that?
>has an epiphany
>solves her internal trauma
>character development
>it makes her pilot the robot better than anyone else
Asuka is a Gurren Lagann isekai'er
I want Mari to be in a lesbian relationship with Asuka and fuck her in front of Shinji while Asuka acts in a meek cute way that she'd never act towards him.
That exact same dialogue is in EoE.
Where's another nge thread for me to shitpost in?
>Gendo never had a hard life
Because he's a genius
>He didn't care about humanities survival or SEELE
Because he's a romantic
>saving humanity did not have to include treating Shinji as shit
He's a high IQ autist, expecting him to be nurturing is nonsensical
>He never even cared about Shinji at all.
He cared enough to keep him at an arm's reach. He reached out to Rei, Ritsuko, Naoko, and Yui, and look how that turned out.
>He reached out to Rei, Ritsuko, Naoko, and Yui
He didn't reach out to Rei, Ritsuko, or Naoko, he only used them.
It was Yui that reached out to Gendo and they were happy together until Yui went of on her own inside unit-01.
>asuka ends up with mari
>shinji ends up with kaworu
Best possible ending. Give Abe a stroke
>let 3 billion people die
When did he ever have the power to stop an impact?
If you're talking about 3.33 Gendo, he's pretty much a flanderization.
The impact only happened because they woke up Adam. Since he knew it was going to happen he could have just stopped them.
>He didn't reach out to Rei, Ritsuko, or Naoko, he only used them.
He loved Ritsuko and Rei, maybe Naoko. But he also used their talents for his own agenda. Those things aren't mutually exclusive. He saved Shinji from that same heartbreak.
He had no intention to stop using people to reunite with Yui, but his kindness was sparing Shinji from the emotional impact of realizing he was being used.
Mari would be a pal and let Shinji in on it.
Even if its just to humiliate him in the end.
>cums in 0.01 seconds
>sits in a corner
>He loved Ritsuko and Rei, maybe Naoko.
Not at all. If he loved Ritsuko he wouldn't have sent her to SEELE. And any affection he showed Rei was just a side product of her looking like Yui, as can be seen by how shitty she lives and how she sees herself.
And it is pretty explicit that he only used Naoko because of her work on the Magi.
Literally all of that, other than Asuka spelling out that she realizes the crazy hospital Kyoko wasnt her, is in EoE.
And manga Asuka kinda fights worse. She has a more pensive worried expression as she fights the Eva seriea and only takes out about 6 of them before the remainder overwhelm her with teamwork (though on that note the MP Evas fought way better in the manga compared to standing around for 1v1s in EoE, and didnt even need to use replica lances)
There's no reason to say he loved Ritsuko when he didn't. And Gendo loving Rei because she resembles Yui doesn't make any difference. He disliked Shinji because he reminded him of himself. If you accept one of these to be a true emotion, you must accept the other.
>And Gendo loving Rei because she resembles Yui doesn't make any difference
He doesn't love Rei, he shows her some affection at times when they are together because she resembles Yui. There is a difference because he still let her live like shit and go around thinking she is useless and entirely replaceable.
>He disliked Shinji because he reminded him of himself
He didn't dislike Shinji because he reminded him of himself. He didn't know enough about Shinji to even know what he was like. He barely interacted with him. He abandoned him at a young age and then only saw him once a year.
>There's no reason to say he loved Ritsuko when he didn't
He never says he loves Ritsuko.
>He didn't dislike Shinji because he reminded him of himself.
He explicitly says so
>He doesn't love Rei, he shows her some affection at times when they are together because she resembles Yui.
God damn you're like the faggots that say Asuka didn't love Kaji
>he still let her live like shit
That foundry apartment was weird and made no logical sense but he could've just kept her locked in his bedroom, not let her go to school, and brought her out for battle, but he didn't.
> and go around thinking she is useless and entirely replaceable.
She's the one who thought this, he acted extremely concerned for her when she was on the border of life and death.
Nice fanfic. He says he loved her. She calls him a liar.
It wouldn't make sense if the dialogue went
>You never loved me!
>I never loved you!
>Liar!
>thinking she is useless and entirely replaceable.
Rei never thought that she was useless, just that her usefulness was geared entirely for Gendo's scenario
And I interpret her saying she is replaceable if she dies as in her physical body literally is something that can be replaced.
Ritsuko doesn't say he never loved her in that scene.
The dialogue was clearly
>"You're an old hag"
>He loved Rei
He didn't, Rei is nothing more than a picture of his wife to him. The ending was Rei rejecting it and embracing her deal indentity as Lilith.
Yeah and you can't love a woman for looking like the first girl you popped a boner to
Fuckin children like you don't understand adult love
