Fang is far less of a bitch than many of the other characters. Pineapple however is one of the few characters that so far hasn't shown much of a huma--I mean bad side.

But yeah. The story is actually about Tomoko always feeling sorry for herself and we are lead to believe that she is the only one. However as the story progresses it shows that everyone, or almost everyone are equally as akward as her and that they all have differnent ways of dealing with stuff.

Nemoto tried hiding who she was and pretended to be normal. She always tried to be noticed and always seemed fake.

Yuri was always keeping to one single friend.

and then there is Koharu/fang here. She might seem like a bully but once she got separated from her "friends" it is revealed that she is very insecure and tried to be a part of the "in-group" by deriding other people. She is the weak willed girl that pretend to a part of the normal crowd by badmouthing other people.

I for one hope there will be a future chapter where the three girls that were her friends and joined another class, will be shown badmouthing her. This would be the final stage of showing that she was always a fake bully/popular girl.

Sure it is. It was obvious since the get go. The whole manga started showing us the world through Tomoko's eyes. It showed us that she was an outcast that had very low self-esteem yet thought herself better than other people. She was never a very nice person. She was selfish, betrayed her friends and generally acted like a jerk to everyone. But even though she wasn't nice, we could still see that she had it hard.

However the moment Nemoto showed up it was clear that the other girl was also screwed up. If you look at how she acted when around other girls she was the type that lacked social queues. She forcefully inserted herself in conversations and blurted out irrelevant lines. She was fake. When Yuri and the delinquent was introduced we were shown that more people in the class were so odd that even the teacher had noticed it. And the story continued down that road.

Ever since Imae was introduced (extremely early on, mind you) Tomoko has been growing as a person, the series massively changed after she took genuine steps to making friends (the Kyoto arc isn't a random coincidence, people like to forget that Tomoko actually planned a lot of it out and tried to get her group together). You also have not even a few, but several moments of Tomoko acknowledging her growth, as well as the series generally focusing on people gaining confidence and solidifying relationships. It's coming of age 101, or I say that but it's honestly masterfully crafted with subtlety and most of the character development is something you have to pay attention to yourself.

The hook of Watamote is the cringe, but the soul of Watamote is getting over yourself and becoming a better person with a richer life.

We know that Mako and Yuri have been friends for a long time, since the beginning of middle school if not before.
The way Mako refers to Fang while with Yuri is not in a way you would try to get one to be friends with the other, but how you'd refer to someone who you both have a common history with. Otherwise Mako giving status updates to Yuri on Fang's current doings while they are alone, or asking her to come with to comfort Fang at the park doesn't make sense. Mako isn't a martyr that would just help anyone in trouble.
Mako knows full well Fang's true personality and the icy relationship she currently has with Yuri, and I doubt she would bother asking Yuri to help knowing both these facts if they didn't have a closer history in the past.

My guess is that they've all known each other since at least middle school. Fang likely had a bitchy personality, but it wasn't as bad yet and manageable. But one day she realizes some people in class think of their group as loners or outcasts and she starts to resent Yuri for it. Fang resolves to gain more friends and become popular, pushing Yuri away. Yuri was fine as long as she has at least one close friend and kept the hurt feelings to herself (confiding in Mako in private), and their relationship ends there.
Fang's relationship with Mako continues but they're not as close. But as Fang's full bitch transformation continues into high school, she uses Mako more to vent her true feelings to since all her other relationships are superficial and no one else would bother with that shit. Que her dragging Mako into her group during the Kyoto trip and isolating Yuri, leading Yuri to resent her for trying to take away her only remaining friend at that point.

Becoming friends with Tomo and Yoshida was probably the only thing that saved Yuri from becoming a hikki or murderer and Fang from being in a ditch somewhere. Mako got Yoshida as a wife out of it too, so everyone's for the better all thanks toOgino.

No. In the first place the series was marketed as relatable to losers. It was not a cautionary tale. Although Tomoko had a few REALLY ridiculous moments, most of her suffering is normal for people who are social retards. With Imae's introduction, Tomoko began trying to legitimately better herself on a social and personal level. There are many examples, from Tomoko attempting to greet Imae on her own, to Tomoko organizing for the school trip, and basically everything after.

This isn't really true, unless you want to count the story as slice of life in the first part of the manga as well. The series did have Tomoko gain friendships, but the vignettes since then haven't really been "slice of life" esque, instead it's been a showcase of strange characters and more of a growing relationship drama (very, very light on the drama, but the actual relationship growth in this series is mostly portrayed seriously, not comically). Tomoko is also always growing throughout. The series' new coming of age direction is most clearly noticeable in the graduation chapter.

"Cute" is rare in this series, and instead it primarily focuses on comedy, in a similar vein to something like Hinamatsuri. It takes place day to day, but the comedy tends to be a little mean or a little on the grosser or lewder side of things. There's also a surprising amount of violence, and genuine moments of relaxation are incredibly rare (furthermore when they come about, they're often portrayed solemnly and with some gravity rather than just being cute girls hanging out)

And one last mention of Imae: a lot of what she did is really a direct result of Imae pushing her to interact with others, encouraging her, and generally being a great role model. Tomoko crying from realizing who it was that hugged her when she was basically feeling possibly the worst yet from having no friends is obviously not insignificant. Imae's role, despite having few appearances, is huge.

I always thought it was funny how Yoshida was the only one in Tomoko's group that ever interacted with Imae.

I'll admit only this: it's kind of easy to miss that Tomoko is growing because Nico cleverly hides a lot of it behind jokes and comedy. It's easy to write off Tomoko rallying her Kyoto group when immediately after failing there's a FUCK THE WORLD punchline.

How would you rather it portray Tomoko's growth? Tomoko's situation changed through a combination of her own efforts and assistance from Imae and Ogino. She got set up with some people she could actually interact with during the field trip, and then through her relationships with those people she was able to gradually grow into a more empathetic and self-assured person.

Don't forget Ogino, she might have been annoying but her efforts did help in the end.

I wouldn't relate that to Tomoko's growth *directly*. She definitely helped, but she also hurt and ultimately the person who sealed the deal on her friendships was Tomoko herself.

Though yeah, Ogino asking Yuri and Yoshida to stick with her PROBABLY helped.
