Its metal and light. Or probably more accurately light reflected by metal which is a cosmic element in classical Asian philosophy. Also ties into Venus being a stand-in for the Moon as they both reflect the sun's light in different ways and Venus acts as the decoy Moon Princess as needed.

Not really, they have their strengths and weaknesses. Mercury has the lowest raw power but a 300(sic) IQ so her specialty is strategy.
Jupiter has the greatest raw power of the inner senshi but lacks finesse and can only brute-force.
Mars has spiritual acumen and extrasensory intuition, and can dispatch weaker things as a priestess without having to transform. Raw power wise is a probably a tie with Venus.
Venus has the best leader skills (especially in the manga) and doubles as a decoy. Her power are the most finessed and versatile because she can a variety of effects like chaining, blinding, and stunning and even healing as Sailor V. She gets a power boost with the Sword she gets from the Moon Kingdom as leader.

Personally I'm inclined towards Usagi and Ami. Healing powers are always handy and while she may not be the strongest water/mist/ice is pretty cool together.
Following that I'd say Makoto, can't go wrong with lightning. So basically my fave three in order.

having one or two similar themes doesn't make them the same, and it doesn't make Madoka a rip-off. Sailor moon isn't a deconstruction of the genre; Madoka is. The plots end completely differently based on what the main characters choose, with the main obvious difference being that Usagi lives in a universe where she's allowed to return to her friends and live happily with them, while Madoka isn't given that option.

The manga at least absolutely is! Unlike the pretty unanimously happy ending of the 90’s anime the manga’s ending is bittersweet at best and an absolute downer at worst.
Sure Sailor Moon and the rest of the Senshi all get revived but at the cost of knowing their destiny is to live out a miserable existence where they have to keep fighting and keep reincarnating in an endless cycle over and over with no hope of ever being able to be normal human beings because their souls are Sailor Crystals rather than regular star seeds. The alternative would be to destroy the source of all life in the universe - and thus existence itself instead.
The peaceful Crystal Tokyo timeline is revealed to be nothing but a short period of peace, a reprieve from when they’ll be inevitably forced to contend with Chaos once more.

Can’t the same thing be said about Madoka then? The ending obviously tries to drive home the point that they’d be better off if they weren’t magical girls and this isn’t an empowering, happy thing.
It also shows that, realistically, if one were to somehow have inborne magical powers and a destined miracle romance it’s most likely because they’re nothing but cogs powering up the cycle of the universe released from some uber high-tech, sci-fi like black hole rather than those powers being some wonderous, magical thing used to power them specifically.

Madoka was definitely the first Magical Girl series besides Princess Tutu to attempt a deconstruction of the genre since Sailor Moon though.
And unlike Princess Tutu it uses the same hardcore sci-fi themes as it’s deconstruction tool like Sailor Moon did too, SM was clearly an inspiration for it.
Hell, Madoka and Homura are basically off-brand Chibi-Moon and Saturn respectively.

There's an enormous difference between something being a rip-off of something else, and being inspired by it. Madoka wouldn't be a good deconstruction of the magical girl genre if it didn't take inspiration from sailor moon. Urobuchi took inspiration from a shitload of other anime/media as well. Madoka still had more than enough unique to it to make it it's own thing; it's not a rip-off of anything. It isn't diminished for playing with tropes that had been used before because they were still used in a creative and nuanced way that had just as much to say narratively (if not more) than what came before it.

You don’t have to tell me that user, I actually like Madoka and regard it as an important title within anime history, I just hate the meme how it’s some novel and original “le deconstruction of the Magical Girl genre” when Sailor Moon preceded it by almost 20 years.
Sailor Moon should get it’s dues too as being a deconstructive series, and the actual FIRST Mahou Shojo deconstruction that helped pave the way for series like Madoka.
