why hasn't manga been appropriated by the west?
i'v ran into some pretty good korean and chinese mangas. it'd be great to see what minds from a different culture could create.

You seriously never heard of the OEL manga that were released in the early 2000s?
Pic related was a one-shot by two English webcomic authors published in Jump in 2015. I remember Yea Forums quite liking it. Good luck trying to find it online though. We use to have a WSJD user who would post weekly chapters from the online magazine. He might have it, wherever he is.

I SUMMON THE POT OF GREED!!!
Is this bait.
manga in the west is literally super hero comics and they are utter trash
They call them comic books and they were in wide publication since the 30's. They are nearly dead now though.
The low-hanging fruit response is to tell you comics exist, but I'll humor this.
I think that comics are too stigmatized in the west to be for children and manchildren, revolving around superheros almost exclusively and all revolving around the exact same concepts.
It would be very interesting if the medium was revived in the west, addressed themes that weren't just singular superhero solving supervillain plots, and digitally published/serialized weekly/monthly, rather than published in issues like they were in the past.
You know a fair bunch of what we now consider manga classics were inspired by Arzach, right?
The artist used to do some EOL manga, I believe, and she has a manga-esque webcomic running now that's honestly probably the closest thing we have to a manga in the west art-wise:
devilscandycomic.com
I feel the main reason we don't get western manga is that western creators aren't used to working on the tight schedules of manga, for probably a fraction of what mangaka or mainstream western comic artists get paid. The west just doesn't have the structure to make its own manga right now. How would you even turn a profit from such a thing when manga piracy is so common?
Your piracy point is valid, but the same could be said for Crunchyroll. Why is that not only afloat, but expanding its licenses?
>I think that comics are too stigmatized in the west to be for children and manchildren, revolving around superheros almost exclusively and all revolving around the exact same concepts.
This.
culture also plays a large role. When you have concepts like chi you can create a world where some humans can do amazing things without having to make it superhero shit and give too much explanations as to why they have the ability they do.
Does a comic exist where everyone in the world has the capability to use powers but everyone differs in aptitude? This is the foundation of a majority of action mango.
it has it's called comic books
There's a rare one called BatoManu that was popular back in the day
I don't think so, because comics in the west so often revolve around a singular hero with entirely unique abilities. If anyone else has powers, they're thrust into the spotlight as another hero, but the cast has to stay small to keep reverence on the big boy
Burger comics culture is dead
I read there was an official translation for this manga/manhwa but all I can find are amateurish scanlations that stopped around the 4th volume
Kill all w*stoids tb h
I feel like everyone just forgets, perhaps way too often, how webcomics blew the FUCK up in the west at least twice in the last 20 years
While story-based webcomics have always been less in number than 4koma-style gag comics, they've always existed, though of course they've also always published in much smaller volume than a typical weekly manga chapter.
Still, if you're looking for a direct analogue in western comics, that's the one, especially because that's pretty much the only way you can break into the western comics industry as a whole if you're a nobody, and probably also the only way to make a name for yourself if you don't want to work on capeshit for 20 years.
>I think that comics are too stigmatized in the west to be for children and manchildren, revolving around superheros almost exclusively and all revolving around the exact same concepts.
People literally go into comic book stores looking for MCU Avengeresque comics and can't find any and leave in disappointment. Given that's people who actually go to physical stores, no one can be arsed to track down shitty comic shitholes locally to pay patronage to them. The digital model is severely lacking.
But point is there's totally an audience but there's a lack of content and a lack of delivery/convenience. Avengers Endgame just blew the fucking shit out of every movie record in history, you don't think even 2-3% of newcomers who watched the MCU would be interested in the source material? They're out there but comics are in such a bad state that they failed to capitalize on it
those exist but they're drowned out by the superhero comics and sometimes mixed in, and they never sell well
Right, because there would have to be a platform and a movement or whatever to make them work. Webtoons and webmanga weren't widely known in the west until only very recently (Made in Abyss, Kengan Asura, Solo Leveling, whatever), but I think that kind of independently publishing "mangaka" style could really do something.
it exists, and is drowned out by the superhero tripe
the fact that you've never heard of it proves my point
Show me an american example
have you ever seen the work of Francesco Francavilla? Incredibly talented, writes and draws pulpy noir stuff, very good.
Gets either drowned out by or sucked into the shitty cape vortex
Easy answer - comic books
Slightly more elaborate answer - the appeal of manga to westerners is that it's foreign, and that foreign storytelling and art is different than what is produced here. If you make left to right comics for adults produced, written, and drawn by westerners it would likely sell like shit due to the target audience not being very interested and no foreign market wants a knock off manga
tell that to James Patterson lel
Yea Forums has a ton of rec charts just like Yea Forums does, I'm sure you're capable of searching for them by yourself.
I don't go there because vaginal smegma
the big issue is actually Yea Forums and Yea Forums crossboarders, just like Yea Forums is mostly plagued by shonenshitters who need to fuck off, except that it's worse
Who is the worst kind of crossboarder for Yea Forums?
Because they lost the war.
Written and drawn by a French guy. It's even gotten an anime now.
>made in abyss
>kengan asura
>webtoon
The fuck are you smoking?
probably people who post those stupid fucking frogs or that one modern rage-face, you know the one
maybe people who don't speak English, they're strong contenders
say what nigga?
don't forget the French productions, like Oban or Wakfu
You could never convince people to work hard enough or hire assistants for cheap enough to release them on a weekly schedule. Even huge as fuck companies like Marvel and DC only do Bi-monthly issues at best with popular titles, and most people in the west expect shit coloured and honestly people who think being good at inks and pencils means you know how to Color well is all kinds of retarded (though obviously some people are a master of all)
Devil's candy is a pretty good western online "manga"
>Made in Abyss
>Kengan Asura
Its made in japan by japanese and its not webcomic, webtoon or webmanga you stupid wine
You do realize that both of those are webmanga, right?
>7 tankobon
>webmanga
We do have visual novels / comics but they are almost impossible to "find" even though there are plenty.
However you are right that manga in the west is quite unlike the japanese meta.
The first VN I ever read was a series called "bone" by Jeff Smith. Read the first uncolored in 2004 and found the colored version years later and picked up all the volumes.
Many webcomics also have physical releases (off the top of my head I can think of 7) what the fuck is your point retard
>visual novel
>VN
Graphic novel*
"visual novel" refers to a completely different thing than what you're talking about
Don't include webmanga with that shitty webtoon gook piece of shit, fucking retard
Then its properly manga now, not some amateur webmanga anymore
>mangas
>korean and chinese mangas
>korean and chinese
>mangas
Goddamn, is this another bait thread made by the chink turdkish shill?
That's literally wrong
If it updates regularly online and only the large volume-type book is released physically, it's still a webcomic or webmanga
In the same way if a TV show premiers on TV but is released to bluray afterward it's still a TV show and not an OVA
Major cultural difference that probably predate the medium as we know it.
Sure yea. What ever it is. All I remember was it saying "visual novel" on the cover as a kid. So I picked it up being bored of 'normal' novels.
WHAT DOES IT DO???
do you prefer i say manhua and manwha?
i prefer you to fuck off, why are you so obsessed with this shit anway you fucking creep? because you're multicolored muslim or some nigger chuckle shit?
whew. calm down there buddy. Don't know why you're so angry. Rarely get on Yea Forums let alone make threads. was just reading some manga and quickly got sick of it so i made this thread.
Let me offer you some advice. If you see a thread that makes you angry minus it.
>I think that comics are too stigmatized in the west to be for children and manchildren, revolving around superheros almost exclusively and all revolving around the exact same concepts.
Yet everyone from newborns to elderly on their deathbeds go to see the newest Marvel movies lmao.
>was just reading some manga and quickly got sick of it
So you don't like manga and prefer that chink/gook shit whatever, what are you even doing on Yea Forums?
>all manga is good
I can't fucking stand you nip worshipers.
A majority of manga is low quality trash I don't read manga just for the sake of it. I read it to find enjoyment. I care about quality unlike you nip worshipers.
Sick that on your mom pisshole you fucking turkish creep, fucking disgusting gookboo
What? why am i a "nip worshipers" now? why are so so obsessed with nip worshipers anyway you keep talked about them in every shitty threads of your, are you finally gone insane, Muhamed?
>go to Yea Forums
>complained about weeaboo, manga biased buhuhuhhu
Fuck off to Yea Forums then, cretin. This board isn't your blogpost
>chink/gook shit
>quality
Oh woe is me
The mainstream western model for comics is pretty busted from a creative standpoint. The practice of constantly introducing new artists to tackle the same "universe", rewriting characters and retconning each others works just leads to a clusterfuck that becomes incredibly hard for new audience to break into, especially superhero fans who really liked a movie that turned out to be a shuffled re-imagining of 5 different arcs. It's not just a problem with the big two though, look at Dark Horse or something and you just get 30+ comic adaptations of Alien, Predator and the Walking dead. Even Hellboy wound up being less that 50% Mignola in the end.
If you want manga style "one artist works on one series that's entirely theirs" you're better off looking at independent publishers like Image, or just webcomics. With them you'll find much more interesting stories, owing to the author really putting themselves into the work.
Looks like we have a seething Chink/SEA here.
also Outlaw Stars, Dreamland, City Hall...
>outlaw stars
DOH!
I mean Outlaw PLAYERS
It'll never happen because the West isn't really into the whole "writer and artist does the whole work themselves" stuff. Yes, there are the rare equivalents but they are never popular, they are underground things. They also don't like anthologies anymore, so that makes it impossible to replicate the Japanese industry where weaker stuff can be supported by being serialized in the same magazine as popular stuff. The concept of making stuff for specific markets would also never fly in this politically correct hellhole, the idea of women mostly making stuff for women and men making stuff for men would undo the entire feminist destruction of the comic industry that has already taken place.
I'd like to take this opportunity to shill the only comic I read called Deadly Class, it sounds like a rip-off of Assassination Classroom but it's actually really good and unique. It's set in the 80s and it's about a hobo named Marcus who joins a secret academy for murder. The story is really unpredictable which makes tense moments really feel like they have weight to them.
The amount of astoundingly good artists is huge in the west, yet most of them spend their entire careers drawing other people's characters and stories
Do they never think to themselves "I've got my own story to tell, why can't I do that?"
No, because being an artist for someone else means no responsibility and easy money. This also brings up another thing about the West is a lot of the artists are all about color so they can't get the cheapness that manga can to have a broader appeal. Comics are ridiculously expensive unless you're buying used copies of the classics.
I follow more than a few comic artists and I can tell you those guys put in WORK, tons of it. Have you seen how clean a penciler is expected to produce pages?
And in the end it's someone else's story/chatacters
western comics are just as good as japanese ones, japan just has a more productive industry
it really feels like the top art of western comics is topper than the top art of japan. Maybe it's the laxer production schedules, or the color, or they're just plain better, but there's something there. Japan has much better paneling though, it's more "cinematic".
>Do they never think to themselves "I've got my own story to tell, why can't I do that?"
I imagine most think that every day. You can easily tell someone like James Stokoe would rather be drawing his own stuff if he could make a living off it.
i mean if you look into indie comics youll find plenty of manga in the us, it exists you just have to look around
Too bad there's no western WSJ equivalent to bring new and interesting shit to the normie audience
Beat me to it
Yes.
Comic book movies are alive
I think most artists are enjoy drawing just for the sake of it. They dont really like writing stories, thats why you see many people cooperate.
People who like to write on the other hand are more likely to become book authors in the west, because its the most common approach
>RWBY
>Avatar
>half of French animation
it has, just not as quickly as you expect/want
To be honest, I'd likely only read it if it was also as pathetically easy to get as manga is
read french comics
Tiananmen square protests
Winnieh the pooh
Gutter oil
Democracy
Etc
>french comics
Hey user, how about you mention how often those update?
I like french comics as much as the next guy but there's no WEEKLY (as in WSJ), or even monthly, publications
You're gonna have to be a bit more specific with your question. Graphic novel in the style of manga produced by non-japanese already exist outside Asia. Go to your local comic/manga store and ask the clerk. The Japanese manga industry itself evolved over decades - no other nation can just replicate it overnight, and they probably shouldn't try to.
Why do you nip worshipers assume anyone that doesn't worship nips is a chink?
I care about quality. you guys don't.
Why does this anger you guys so much?
Seasons passes, dynasties rise and fall, but it'll always be fun to mock the chinks
Too many people in this thread are looking at Big Two capeshit and wanting it to be WSJ Shonenshit.
The West produces great comics just like The East does. They have different industry structures but both have put out amazing works in all sorts of genres that can appeal to all audiences. There is something for everyone from both western and eastern comics.
This includes things written and drawn by a single individual (sometimes colored/inked/lettered by the same person as well) and anthology titles like Heavy Metal
I say this as someone who loves the comic book medium as a whole and is fully aware of the serious problems in the mainstream western comic industry right now. But just because 80+% of current Marvel/DC comics are trash does not mean that the west can't into comics.
Manga also literally just means japanese comics, they are literally the same medium
>why hasn't manga been appropriated by the west?
it has to a really miniscule extent. and the west already has a lot of good comics, pic related
What is your favourite western comic book/series? I would like a good read but I don't know where to start.
Im writing a fantasy/adventure webcomic myself and I barely have any input from anything thats not manga.
David Rubin stuff is pretty kino
Not him but try stuff by Rosinski or Van Hamme
That's a tough question, there's a lot to love. If you're specifically looking for fantasy/adventure stuff for influence, I would recommend taking a look at:
Conan (2004) by Kurt Busiek & Cary Nord (and others) - this is arguably the best American comic made in the 2000s. It's a faithful expansion and retelling of a lot of the original work by Robert E. Howard that is just gorgeous and extremely well done. Nord's unique colors-over-pencils artstyle is astonishingly good, and the writing is fantastic. I couldn't recommend this one higher, it is what made me fall in love with comics and Conan both. Pic related.
Roy Thomas' Elric adaptations are also very good. These are currently being collected in new volumes by Titan Comics. Thomas is known for doing Marvel's Conan adaptations, so by this time he got quite skilled at translating novels to comics, and he is also paired with incredible artists for these stories like P. Craig Russell and others. These are straight adaptations of Michael Moorcock's fantasy epics, and they do them justice all around. Luscious, highly detailed artwork and great storytelling.
Cerebus the Aardvark by Dave Sim & Gerhard often gets called the "Ulysses of Comics", for good reason. Entirely self-published with a singular creative vision throughout (Dave Sim does the writing and character art, Gerhard does backgrounds) for 300 issues. It started as a simple Conan parody but quickly evolved into something truly remarkable and unique. There is a reason that Alan Moore said "Cerebus, as if I need to say so, is still to comic books what Hydrogen is to the Periodic Table." You also get to see Dave Sim have a schizophrenic breakdown around the late hundreds (issue-wise) and tracking his mental state through the long-form narrative you're reading is something wholly unique.
I hope those help. I can provide more generalized recs or stuff for specific genres/tones if you'd like. I just love sharing knowledge and talking about comics.
thanks, I'll take a look at each of them.
The sad reality is that if we even touched on anything manga like here in the west, itll be jammed so full of political or social material that itll just be a waste of resources to even produce
All korean & chinese "mangas" are absolute dogshit.
Looks interesting but it seems to be only in French.
is that a problem?
I don't speak/read frog
that seems like a personal issue, user
why would i want to learn an african language?
Pot of Greed allows me to draw two more cards from my deck.
