The only girls she's really in competition with are the other first three, and if Tanlines fucks off the America then she's out of the running, leaving just her and Short-stack. Given Rizu's lack of popularity, I'm willing to bet its gonna be some narrative judo to flip Fumio into the lead. The very fact that she's aware of everything but hasn't admitted her own feelings makes me think she's gonna get it. Will I be pleased with this? Nah, but that's just how I see it.

Well because Fumino isn't just pandering to the audience she's pandering to Japan. More seriously though, she was always one of the prime two contenders. Sensei would be pandering because she never was a serious contender, Until she got the top of the popularity charts. It wouldn't really fit with her character or the narrative. If she had been a more central character earlier on, and if she wasn't so serious about being a proper teacher, then yeah she's in the running. But as is, it would actually be pretty out of character for her to end up in a relationship with one of her students. Even if she waited until he graduated and what not, that would be frowned upon in society, and this doesn't seem like that kind of comic.

Its not JUST a front. She's trying very hard to be the perfect teacher. Which, of course, she isn't perfect, and the cool part about her is all the ways in which her Ice Queen Ultrasensei facade cracks. But her intentions never change. She is always trying to be the best teacher she can. Sure she can fall in love with that boy, but that's not going to be enough. Someone is going to win before they graduate. Sensei would not allow that kind of relationship until some time after graduation, she wouldn't even acknowledge it. So, she's out. in a perfect ending scenario for her you would have all the other girls telling her that's alright if she dates Yuiga just to give her the resolve to go for it, and it would still make sense

Oh of course, and they'll play that up as much as possible because its tasty forbidden love. But the key word there is "after graduation". Graduation is likely the end of the comic as it would be the resolution of all the main storylines. Everyone is trying to get into their various courses, and the culmination of that is graduation. So someone is going to win right around that time, and I doubt sensei is going to swoop down and snatch him up that quickly.

I think you don't truly grasp how rigid the life of athletes really is. Mafuyu didn't skate as a hobby, she was entering tournaments and everything. She was already a pro when she was in high school. Professional athletes do not have free time, nor do they have a personal life. Other than basic needs, obligatory school, and a little bit of downtime, they spend their whole days training.

Just noticed something really subtle here compared to JB's translation. The translation made it seem like it's all one quick reflexive burst but the third bubble starts off with a stutter making it come off as more hesitant and reflective in tone. That plus the content basically places her mindset in the area of "I'm the one who makes this relationship awkward. He doesn't see me that way and this is definitely not like my kareego comics."
Also, note the bottom right panel here. She was leaning in and about to reach out to him with her hand to comfort/reassure him on the matter but immediately stopped and went quiet as soon as the girls fall in. She literally goes completely silent while they're around but was willing to out how close they are in front of his mother.
She was making very sure that the students wouldn't walk away with the impression she was about to give but the question here is what was the main motive behind that? Was it to protect their image of her as an educator or was it to make sure moeyuki wouldn't get into trouble because of her yet again potentially making it awkward for him? 22i really knows how to stir up my shoujo addiction.

although not saying much sensei is an anomaly when it comes to romcoms, teacher characters are rarely popular and unless that's the spin of the manga they are rarely the most popular character, coupled with being the only one with any ties to the MC's family makes her even rarer, if she wins she would be a fucking unicorn

No reason she shouldn't also offer some response to it. There's a very telling contrast in demeanor before and after. Supportive and intimately close before and then neutral and at a distance after. The only difference is that there are students watching now.

Sensei became a serious contender the moment 22i decided to make her into a proper haremette. 22i rewrote both nariyuki and fumino into different characters that became their new canon personas, don't stick so hard to initial premise when it's so clear that later developments overweight earlier ones.
Fuck it, we're at a point where Nariyuki gave up on the scholarship that's been the macguffin for most of the manga. About sensei and nariyuki relationship, you cannot rule it out because of a moral issue, not when it's clear that they won't do anything before graduation and multiple characters being okay with it past that point.
You're also thinking under the assumption that because 22i started this manga with fumino and rizu he made an implicit promise to readers to end with one of them. He later went on record that "anyone can win", which clears him from having to justify himself if neither fumino or rizu turn out to be endgame.
Sensei ending is fine too, but there needs to be a lot of blushing and cute faces.

I'll just point out that rizu is a massive anomaly as far as main heroines go.
The whole atmosphere of that scene really makes it seem like what his mom first assumed it was going to be. Them sitting so close to each other really sets it up that way.
Anyone who still thinks it's not going to be a Sensei ending. Think about this. Sensei is the only girl that has asked Nariyuki for his opinion on what she should do. All the other girls are blindly chasing their dreams without considering what it would mean to their relationship with Nariyuki. Even Uruka who would rather go swim abroad than properly confess and try to date him. Yet Sensei asks Nariyuki directly what he wants her to do. She cares about his opinion.
