Just finished watching this show. Finding it hard to pin down my opinion on this character. He is indeed annoying when he tried to be cool but I find him agreeable at other times. He's like a Shinji that actually does stuff and is therefore more likeable in the process.

The only similarity between Shinji and Subaru is that they are subversive protags in their genre who’s actions are largely dictated by their situations, but that’s where the similarities end. Subaru DOES have a real personality that compels him to do things that he isn’t necessarily forced to do, where as Shinji is a completely blank slate who only goes where the wind blows.

basically a rewrite, a lot of the "same" things happen but how Subaru got there, why he's there are different. The tone and atmosphere are completely different. In short the LN rewrote it to be more "exciting" by removing almost all the worldbuilding, foreshadowing (things become asspulls instead of being set up long beforehand), and the side character's moments.

It's been 2 years since I read arc 4, but I think it wasn't that people attributed Subaru's success to his dad but that everyone told him they had high expectations for him and he felt very guilty that he couldn't live up to them. Well its going to be the exact same as the butchered LN. See, last thread someone was kind enough to post excerpts of coma scene from both the LN and the WN, and the LN one had unnecessary additions that, I will admit, would carry well for a future anime adaptation. The problem is that the book is being written with an adaptation in mind, not the other way around. Essentially, since the anime went all Emiliafag and gutted Rem's scenes, the novel treats Subaru and Rem's love as something vague or doesn't even exist. Meanwhile they are doing poor decisions with Emilia herself like complimenting her way too much, fellating her in and putting her in scenes she has no business in. In addition, they seem to suck out Emilia's flaws and pin them all to another character. They are also removing god tier scenes that existed in the WN and replacing them with more easier adaptable scenes. Not withstanding the constrictions of a light novel, the result is an unsatisfactory version of a great novel series.
