Who was least affected by the art change? Genta and Shiho? I guess pic related isn't a good example because I wanted a front shot to go with the Movie 22 image and it was the first I thought of, but it looks like they just went over that image itself, so it might be closer to her original look than non-redone shots..

God damn she is so fucking hot.
i like the right one, natural cute to be honest, the left just soulless
The newer designs feel like they try for the cool/sexy look instead of cute. Like whenever Aoyama used to draw "cool" females they'd have that sharp look, now everyone has it even the ones who used to not have it. I prefer a nice cute/sexy mix like old, right Shiho. She's still cute in the left but the sharp angles make her more conventionally sexy.
I think the same applies to most of the characters. Everything seems to have shifted from cute to cool. Unfortunately many of the episodes these days seem rushed and of low quality in random scenes regarding how the character style translates, they end up looking their best in the films since they have more time.
it's kinda weird seeing the style evolve over the series and now the latest style is not only the longest, not only outnumbers other styles combined, but will also probably last until the end of the series
how do they even top this? earlier on the movies raised the bar and the anime slowly caught up. this still happened somewhat but the movies aren't innovating much any more other than pure budget (which goes to shading mostly)
I don't know but if topping it means getting even more angular I don't want to find out.
In 2004's Conan looks like he's wearing a pope outfit.
I want more Haibara and less Ran.
I want them to fix Ran and capitalize on the best girl that she could be. But also focus more on actual best girl Haibara who even feels sidelined during Black Organization cases now.
She's too beautiful and cool man
Oh that's another good shot of her modernized design.
Peak artstyle here
It was cozy.
>I think the same applies to most of the characters. Everything seems to have shifted from cute to cool.
I'd say the opposite for the guys, at least for Shinichi. He looks younger now that his face has become wider and shorter, more like Conan's facial proportions. He used to look more mature with his long thin face and that was a cooler/sexier look. Making him look younger and cuter may have helped his popularity with fujos who predominantly see him as a cute girly uke, but I don't think it suits his character at all.
I think the girls by and large still look cute and recognizable in the new designs, but everyone looks bad in profile now with those animal-like lower faces.
Sluts
What manga will end first, Conan or Hajime no Ippo?
I don't know about Hajime but Conan is getting to its slow and steady conclusion.
He does look younger. Sometimes his face is a bit longer but it just depends whose the director I guess. Never to the original point it used to be. Aside from that I wish they didn't go for the blocky jilted look. It highlights those stuttery scenes where the framerate is slower.
Are you going to see the new Gomera movie, Yea Forums?
I have never seen one of those movies.
These are breasts, there's no getting around it this time.
I want to grope Ayumi.

>that case where ran flashes back to the start of the series and everyone has big smartphones
I'm fine with advancing technology over the years, or else it might accidentally seem like a period piece, but to go back to original stories where the year was different (in our time) and keep the changes is just too far.
>or else it might accidentally seem like a period piece
I don't see any problem with that. A lot of the charm of the early series came from a deliberately old-fashioned music and art aesthetic in homage to old detective series. They could have kept innovating along that theme instead of ditching it altogether.
If the author wants the entire series to take place in under a year, there would have been nothing wrong with picking an arbitrary year and keeping that setting, whether it's a year closer to when the series started or any other year. The floating timeline just makes things more confusing. So many changes would have to be made to early cases if we're to believe the entire thing takes place in 202x or whatever year Gosho decides to end it. Plus it ruins all of those references to the end of the century that are sprinkled into the manga/anime prior to 2000. Maybe it's just me but I thought those were really cool at the time and still do.
I wouldn't mind it being a period piece either, mix keeping the VCR an important household system, Conan calling Ran via payphone, and the fuzzy fluffy hair, and you have a really fucking great thing going for a modern series. I don't spout the aesthetic meme like others do but Conan really had a good one. I just meant that Aoyama keeping it as it was the entire time would make it appear as though it were a period piece when that wasn't Gosho's intention, it was always a current day story, it especially needed to be in some cases where laws have changed (this has happened during the run), the jazz was a wonderful symptom of the 90's nostalgia for decades past. Jazz is fairly universal though, it's just a shame they butchered the soundtrack when it went digital by making I believe every track some synthesized fake jazz sounding thing, they even recreated old themes like Ran's. They sound fine on their own but knowing what they're coming off of is a drastic change in quality. The later movie themes go for more conventional "'epic" theatrical tones, which I like here and there but the original jazz can't be beat.
I love this series, I love its past and its present, but I realize despite the overall quality being retained, the anime has gotten more basic in style. I'm just glad they don't try and pretend its past doesn't exist entirely. They did recreate old scenes in the new style for consistency, but they air old remasters often in the premiere timeslot. Also yea the floating timeline can be an issue, but that's just how it goes from having a set story where time doesn't progress and there's a specific dynamic to everything lasting for awhile. I agree as well about the end of the century thing.
If the anime staff likes Haibara more than Ran then they're doing a shit job of giving her screentime. Imagine being tasked to write a Conan filler, you could make it just a one on one Haibara and Conan story.
>no more OVAs
Different directors had their preferences, but in the first few seasons generally most of the episodes followed the manga in making Shinichi's face long and oval. I keep a folder of every appearance he's ever had in the manga, and what I've noticed is that he had that look up until his airplane case flashback in vol 21 when Gosho drew him in accordance with his younger age. Then after that he kept the same wider, more triangular face with a shorter jaw even for his present day appearance. So I think later changes to his design in both anime and manga were based off of that point.
Maybe I'm alone in this but I found his original design to be just perfect. Making him look more mature feels better as a contrast to becoming Conan. It also reflects his inner self better because I think he's genuinely mature in many respects for his age even when he was 16.
I don't know what you mean by "blocky jilted look," but in the newer eps all the lines look vectored, and they hardly curve, like they're welded together at right angles. The art in the first few years of digital episodes still had a more human softness to it.
Interesting, by blocky jilted look I just meant how the lines dont curve as much as they used to like you said. It's really evident in the adults at times. When they do that weird comic book line weight on scenes it makes it worse. I think most people would agree about his original design. There was no reason to change any of them, I understand wanting to move on and make Conan not as round as he was at the very start, but there was a middle ground that we reached that has been passed for a long time in the anime. The manga can lean into too sharp territory as well but sometimes he has rounded edges.
The less contrast between Shinichi and Conan is a true shame too.
I wish the dub made Kogoro calling Conan "bowtie" more of a thing, I think he did it twice at least. It was cute.
Unfortunately there's nothing we can do about it. I've seen memes on the Japanese internet making fun of the current ugly designs but it doesn't seem like most casual fans are that bothered by them. So unless the anime staff in charge start retiring or moving onto other projects, the designs won't be changing any time soon.
For my part I'll just keep working on trying to make fanart inspired by the old styles.
I didn't know the japanese cared enough about the newest style to meme/joke about it. It's been this way so long that if it did change again it'd be surreal. I don't think there's much room between the current styles of the manga and anime to make enough of a change in the anime to be closer to the manga. They clearly phased through styles to be with the manga but in the animation it looks dreadfully cheap at times. The coloring/shading can sometimes save it. Luckily there's enough scenes where it isn't that bad to me so that I don't stop watching over it.
I just rewatched that the other day. Conan's supreme sulkiness is so cute. I wonder how much he would have sulked if he were his original size.
It was also interesting that Heiji dreamed about him in Shinichi form, I wonder if he normally imagines him that way.
Ran is so shit in comparison. Aoyama is blinded by his childhood friend couple obsession.
>I don't know about Hajime but Conan is getting to its slow and steady conclusion.
>slow and steady
Really? I dunno, going for Rum aka the fucking second-in-command in BO right after Bourbon arc seems like too much of a jump to me. I have this really nagging feeling that Aoyama is going to rush the end.
Its hard to tell.
It is cute, I bet he'd be more determined to meet Heiji later, while with Conan it was by luck that the guy they were riding with got news on the case that spiraled into him getting involved again. Otherwise he'd be stuck with the girls.
>It was also interesting that Heiji dreamed about him in Shinichi form, I wonder if he normally imagines him that way.
I also wondered that, I guess his first meeting left a big impression if his mentality sees through Conan straight to Shinichi, even subconsciously. While teasing him and picking him up at times he does call him Kudo a lot.
Any good batch torrent to watch this?
I just realized I responded to the wrong person, I meant and that it was hard to tell if it'll be rushed.
cute
Wasted trips, childhood friend couples are the fucking best and Aoyama has patrician taste. GTFO
reminder sato and takagi are secretly childhood lovers
Childhood friends hardly ever win in other series and are usually just magnets for suffering, so it's nice that there's one author who lets them win whenever they're in the picture.
For me, it's chiba and naeko (second to heiji and kazuha)

She's an Akai so I better see her featured prominently in Movie 24.
Where are we on the movie dubs situation? Is it going to be a fathom event? Direct to DVD?
We don't have any new information, just the old stuff we heard about at the start. Speaking of the new dub again, I've been wondering if they'll keep the original dub translations. I don't mean name changes or Americanization (which started going away in the last few movies we got), I mean stuff that isn't really a dub change but was just how they did it, like will they call them The Detective Boys or keep The Junior Detective League? Will Conan say "There is only one truth!" or will it be "One truth will always prevail!"?
I hope they keep what they changed, while newly introduced characters keep their original japanese names. They better not fuck up and call Sherry "Shelly" again though.
What episode
Old Castle Investigation Case
Oh yeah
Is this the only one where Ai is investigating ?
If it's a new studio with a new voice cast, there's a chance they'll scrap the old dub names and go with all Japanese names. I'd be fine with that but I hope they wouldn't mispronounce the names too badly. Maybe it's hard for non-Japanese speakers to hear the difference but it's not "Shi NI chi" or "Ron".
That I immediately recall. If I remember any others I'll let you know.
It's a new studio, Bang Zoom instead of Funimation. Don't know if the cast is being changed but it's highly likely. Awhile back I accidentally clicked on a fandub and they did the Ron thing and it pained me. Nevermind the very basic bored tone the guy had.
Something interesting about Blue Sapphire is that the credits are a mix of English and Japanese. I think this is the only movie to do it but I'm not sure. TMS' early hint of an overseas release makes me wonder if it was intended from early in production. They also hold on the english logo longer than some other films (Private Eyes' Requiem never even showed the full un-obscured english logo)
youtube.com
But isn't it pronounced similarly to "Ron" in Japanese? I can understand "Shin-ichi" because that's how the Japanese kanji are separated, but "Ron" should be completely fine.
That intro with cards flying around covering up most of the screen and frames from important scenes barely visible is sheer eyerape. Maybe they assume everyone already knows the story but then why even bother to do the intro anymore.
Also they might keep the Case Closed name according to TMS's twitter using it as a hashtag and the new game being released over here (that gacchi phone game) keeping it. Whatever buddyfight is Conan's involvement is also credited under Case Closed. It'd be weird to keep that change but revert all the names again.
It depends on the delivery, Conan says it in a "rahn" kinda way. It's very similar. Some people in these threads have said they should just say "ran" which is how I read it, but some dubs go for japanese pronunciation, like for instance "hi ba dah" for Haibara. That always sounds obnoxious to me. At least when its an english actor, unless the name is goofy sounding phonetically in the first place the japanese actors doing it is fine (and normal, obviously.)
They should have just kept the cards as transitions between scenes and not borders. Not only does it obscure footage, it can be distracting. On a movie theater screen I imagine it's not so bad. Zero did something similar but with the added effect of everything going really fast.

>some dubs go for japanese pronunciation, like for instance "hi ba dah" for Haibara.
Now I'm more confused. Are you not supposed to pronounce Japanese names with Japanese pronunciation?
It's not that you're not supposed to but different show dubs do different things. It just bothers me because the actors talk normal but in those instances when they get to a name its like a different voice performance in tone and speaking, almost in a fake sounding way.
In my dialect of American English, which is probably similar to whatever they use at Bang Zoom since we're both in California, the vowel in the English name Ron is different from the Japanese name Ran, aw vs ah. I know not everyone can hear the difference between the two vowels, but I hope people who hear her name don't associate it with a guy's name, especially for those hearing it for the first time.
Reminder that there's an off chance that the Bang Zoom dub is for Southeastern Asian territories. Dragonball Super is being dubbed in America by Funimation, but Bang Zoom dubbed it for those other territories.

Though DB is Toei.
>mfw the new Conan dub ends up sounding like that
Seeing her in the old art style again like this is reminding me how much I love her.
is that steven universe dad?
I think it's supposed to be more like "Rahn". Japanese is usually soft A sound.
Will BangZoom Conan sound like him?
It'd disappoint me extremely. That Goku is Lex Lang, the guy who revealed the dub credit on his site as the Kusakabe character in Zero. I haven't heard his other roles anime dub wise that I'm seeing on wikipedia but I know the guy in Regular Show since my brother watched it a lot and I remember Barry.

It's a less higher pitch than the Goku.
No it's literally just the same voice. Greg was voiced by Tom Scharpling.

I really, really hope not. In Case Closed his voice was just a basic young sounding female voice.

This would just be ridiculous.
They cut the rape off at the end of that Hunter clip.

ARE YOU READYYYYYYYY
I love this song, it has a nice beat. I don't think I've ever seen the lyrics translated or otherwise.
Fuck, I hate that Aoyama loves childhood romances when there is better pairings to be had here.
2001 to 2003 looks good.
In 1996-1997 the proportions were all fucked up with his comically large ears and bow.
2008- 2013 looks a bit soulless, like there is no genuine emotions on his face
I love it too, it's my favorite OP from then to now. Used to watch it over and over. I like how the lyrics fit the characters and their situation so well.
I based part of this translation on a fansub but tried to make it match the meter a little better.
The big ears were one of the most unique and charming parts of the original DC character designs though.
This, I miss monkey boy Conan.
What a handsome jug-eared lad.
