The one with the mechanical butterfly thing and the escalator was also from back when they were going with the opera house aesthetic for the hideout (before they had settled on a traditional Japanese aesthetic for the song)

Thought Ikuhara's answer to the question about why he's so interested in exploring the theme of family in his work was pretty interesting. Normally he'll answer stuff like this with an abstract broad-strokes about society/etc or dodge with a joke but he got pretty personal here

Yeah, if he's supposed to look like a ugly kid they totally failed. He's even prettier in Migi's sketches than in the anime.

The line between ugly and cute is super blurred these days. A lot of fujoshi love "uglycute" characters or outright ugly characters like at least half the cast of Yowapeda and other sports anime but don't recognize them as ugly. I think Toi doesn't have a traditionally cute look, but he reads as cute to a lot of people regardless.

1.Reviving Mabu somehow went fine and they spent God knows how many years living together happily until Mabu's disappearance on Twitter happened and changed him completely
2Mabu's death and rebirth happened after the manga and before the Twitter. Still, something happened after his disappearance that changed him further.

He might smuggle drugs or own a gun overseas. Who knows, when it's out of Japan things don't seem that hard.

It's just a "the MC was crazy all along" ending. It works for that story, but I would hate it in Sarazanmai.

I think it's neither. I think the manga happened, Sara disappeared and erased their memory of her, the twitter happened, Mabu dies during that "dangerous mission" and then 10 years later it's the anime. Reo and Mabu waking up next to Sara at the very end happens after the anime. Somehow.

Also worth noting that environmental clues place the manga at the same time period as the twitter (2007-ish).

I did see someone speculate that the pink slip in the envelope Reo finds at the end might be a draft notice (apparently this is the color they typically were in Japan) and thus lead into the post-epilogue, but I still have a hard time reconciling that with what actually happens there: for one both Reo and Mabu are enlisted in the army in the post-epilogue where Mabu is mortally wounded, but at the end of the Twitter Mabu disappears on his own and then returns, repeating his initial tweet

Sara did say she couldn't tell them why she was leaving. Considering she seems to have erased their memory as well, it was probably because she was trying to keep them safe and out of whatever was causing her to leave. So yes, it probably was that.

Is he really though? He always seemed consistent to me, though we do see a bit less of his silly internal thoughts because it's twitter. Any off behavior can be explained by him hiding things, possibly to protect Reo.

Yeah, Mabu doesn't seem that much different. He still loves cooking, clearly is still fond of and warm towards Reo and makes silly jokes. He's nothing like the cold robot of the novel/anime. The difference is probably just that he's typing short tweets instead of talking.

Twitter was when Mabu started to go "missing" on his own accord and we do get a few traces of bickering between the two of them, so I guess it was when their relationship started to deteriorate. But I do think something very important must've happened between his final disappearance and the anime. If it wasn't his death maybe it was a reset, like some anons were speculating.

I dunno, I guess this is probably going to come down to personal interpretation, but he sounds a lot stiffer already on the Twitter account. He's not very emotive and even Reo continually draws attention to this when he takes photos of him. Personally I saw his blurry sefies as just a funny quirk of his, like "ha ha he can't use a camera", but you could be onto something.

This is questionable to me too. At first I thought it was presenting Mabu's actions as cute and quirky, but I'm now wondering if something psychological is affecting his way of viewing himself and his identity, making actions involving himself uncontrolled.

Like, maybe those are just supposed to be weird eccentricities or something, but that was the stuff that made a lot of people start to wonder if Mabu might be dead or something. It feels like some kind of deliberate hint at least (or again I guess it could be a cruel red herring since Ikuhara doesn't seem to care about playing "fair" with twists)

I did have a thought about what pronouns they both use and whether Mabu's change significantly (popular anime trope for this sort of thing) and he uses "ore" in both the manga and Twitter, but in the novel (and presumably this week in the anime) he uses "watashi"

To be fair, he has a hard time taking pictures in general. I also interpreted it as another weird quirkiness of his, but explanation is that he was some sort of important otter/kappa (if you believe those theories) that had less experience in the human world. Also falls in line with why Reo would think of him as pure, and why the otter empire would want to keep him around, beyond just someone like Reo requesting it. The pictures could also have something to do with the weird time things; what kind of camera is he using to upload to a site that shouldn't exist yet?

Also I think the stiffness might just be a translation thing or the difference between being not being able to see his expressions. Looking at the raws of the manga, his speech pattern doesn't seem particularly different than in the twitter, though I'm just skimming it all currently and I'm not fluent.

This could, of course, like most of this stuff just be a quirk or red herring, but it feels like a deliberate contrast, especially considering Reo still sounds about the same (although he seems to have a lot less patience with Mabu overall).

Obviously this is all highly subjective and we're all probably wrong on some level because Ikuhara is Ikuhara, but yeah, that's just my take.

It depends a lot on context, but no "ore" isn't particularly associated with robots, it's just the pronoun adult men typically use. "watashi" here is probably more of the formal/impersonal variety (the type of thing you might use in a formal work setting––which could be read as a cold tone with respect to Reo).

I think it could be natural for Mabu to type with less passion than he speaks/feels. His sentiments may be passionate despite the way he writes them.
