Best way I can describe it is it's just really bad at explaining itself. It has good ideas, when I examine them independently I see a lot of cool stuff there, but the exposition is sparse, terse, and unfocused. Like it was written by the author to remind himself what was going on rather than to get the audience invested in the story.
There's no sense of narrative. I have no idea who is responsible for the war, who were its main instigators, what was their goal, was it accomplished? I have no idea. What was Free's goal in joining the military? Did he accomplish it? Why's he working for the government? Who's in charge of the government anyway? Does Free agree with them? There's basically no establishing scenes that provide answers to these basic questions about the underlying forces in the story. Instead we get a big sloppy pile of exposition about a war and some people, but no real sense of motivations or reasons, which makes it really hard to care or empathize with anybody.
You take an original anime that was pretty lackluster last season, Egao no Daika, it also had problems with properly setting the stakes and explaining motivations, but it still at least conveyed a clear narrative focus about who was in charge, who was doing things and why, at least on the Kingdom of Soliel's side.

Half of things you asked will be revealed during the story, or are not important at all. It's not Tolkien, they are not making an encyclopedia/historical record of a fictional world. Furthermore, this story is not told by omniscient narrator, it's told through characters who themselves might not know any deep motives of events. You are asking about the war, but so far only one character (Duke of Ainedern) would know anything about why it started or why it ended or what was accomplished by having it waged. We might see it in his actions, or we might only deduce it, but he has no storyline need (for now) to explain any of that in speech.
In short, this show will not comply to your demands, it'll continue to tell the story the way it already does. If it didn't catch you, so be it.

That's bullshit. For the most part, Yea Forums doesn't care a bit about things that are not ongoing battle shounen power levels or ongoing romcom shipping war. This show just has many "trigger" points for shitposters: slightly unusual artstyle, CG characters, lots of setting information that's pieced together instead of just told over an infodump.

In Free's case, probably before he even met Wolfran - so far there wasn't anything indicating they knew each other before they've became Fairy Soldiers for Ledrad.
And Sweetie's is "damage reflect", i.e. mist doesn't do damage by itself, it transmits the damage fairy sustains back to the source. Note how Marlya's hand got weakness-striken after she shot the fairy in it's hand.

Maybe there were different ideas on how to best use Fairy Soldiers, like Ledrad made specialised squads, and other countries might have given fairies to commanders and high officers, or to singular hunter-killers like we saw attacking Ledrad'd artillery at Dipre.
