Gintama was always best as a comedy avoiding story, every dramatic arc is an over-the-top melodrama fest
Like you'll get a comedy arc full of juvenile jokes and fun nonsense and then you're supposed to care about this incredibly bland drama afterwards and Gintoki getting his ass destroyed before he harnesses the power of his soul or his friends or whatever it is that time and wins

That's what made the serious arcs of Gintama so impactful on us, Sorachi made some god tier serious arcs. Dropping the formula of the show and just doing so many consecutive serious arcs had the quality of them drop so much

That's one of the reasons I dropped Gintama.
The other one is Sorachi not taking any risks with the women. Many female readers will praise Gintama for female portrayal, but besides one or two of them, nobody actually gets stripped comedically, or gets assraped comedically, or gets wedgied comedically, or get their limbs severed in real fights, or get involved in a Gintoki boss fight, etc. I swear Otae, Tsukuyo, Kagura, Nobume, Sacchan, Kyuubei all have qualities to be as good as the men, but Sorachi will never make them share the spotlight. At least until Kagura in the last arc but my point still stands.
