This is a good point. I want to watch a anime where a athlet joins the Boston Bruins and gets the shit beat out of them just to come back and rek them in some semi final.

honestly don't know, it would be a success since it would include a lot of blonde/redhead/brunette north Europeans, Canadians and Americans so fujos would eat that shit up immediately, but I guess Japan isn't that familiar with Hockey (there has been literally just 1 Japanese NHL player), maybe a Japanese exchange student getting familiar with the sport (and explaining the rules in the process) would work, baseball and soccer have the advantage that Japan is familiar with them so they cut this step out

Hockey is hardly played in Japan. I remember seeing one Japanese jersy for a small league from the Hokkaido prefecture in the 80s at the Toronto hockey hall of fame museum, never heard of any other instance of it being played in their country. Also went out to a social event with some Japanese exchange students to a sports bar one time, a lot of them said it was their first time seeing a hockey game when we were watching the game that was playing in the bar.
