The appeal of Slayers is that it's a proper Dungeons and Dragon anime.
That is to say, it gives you the experience of going through a real Dungeons and Dragons campaign. The main character is a classic min maxer, the hero put all his points into STR and 0 into int, the other girl put a completely random set of stats to role play as a "warrior of justice", and the other dude took it so seriously he has a completely useless build by comparison. Meanwhile, their DM's avatar is a total shitter who puts them in outrageous scenarios as punishment for them constantly breaking the game.
It's basically the complete opposite of Record of the Lodoss War which is the "ideal" DnD campaign made into an anime.
